Who here is missing not having the Clint Eastwood Challenge, or watching movies together and commenting on them?
It's a tough time of year to start something new, with the holidays approaching, but I was thinking we might be able to do something at a slower pace, that would be fun and give us something to do together as a group. Since we've just watched all the Clint movies, it would be non-Clint movies. I'm thinking one movie a week, and we'd have themes. Members who sign up will take turns nominating the movies that we'll watch. It will be like a book club, but for movies.
Here's my idea for what it might look like. A theme that I'd be interested in starting off with would be Classic Movie vs. Remake. I just watched The Manchurian Candidate from 1962, and then followed it up with the remake from 2004. They were very different, and it was interesting to watch the differences, not just in cast, but in plot to make the modern version work in today's era. It was also interesting to see the great acting from both casts, and what worked, and what didn't. So I thought that might be fun to watch together, and discuss. So, we could do Week 1 the 1962 version, Week 2, the 2004 version.
Then, whoever signs up as being interested here would consider the theme (Classic vs. Remake) and we'd put them on the schedule. When everyone has had an opportunity to pitch the films for that theme, we might choose another theme... maybe 1970 horror films. We could do this for quite some time.
So, sign up here if you're interested in joining in. If you're interested, post here, and then also post your pitch for what Classic Movie & Remake you'd like us to put on the schedule. We can start this in a few weeks, and I'll make the schedule far enough in advance for everyone to track down the movies we'll be watching.
-
I'm in.
How about Cape Fear 1962 VS 1991.
-
Great choice! I haven't seen the '91 version since it first came out. And I'm struggling to remember if I'd ever seen the original. Looking forward to them.
-
You can also sign up even if you have a hard time coming up with films to watch. Just post your interest here if you like the idea and want to participate.
-
So NO ONE wants to join us? AKA? Christopher? Gant? Aline? Am I gonna have to start PMing all of you and harassing you to have fun with us? I feel like I'm at the 8th grade dance trying not to look awkward while trying to figure out how to ask Mandy GoLightly to dance to Hot Blooded by Foreigner.
C'mon I'm not doing this with SK alone. We need more.
-
I do like the idea, its a good one.. Im in if I can do it time wise..
Cape Fears a goodie too... much prefer the original tho..
-
Great! Two hours a week... that's all. One movie per week.
Now if we can swing up about 3 more members, we'll have a nice group. Who else?
-
Gant, come up with a classic and a modern remake for us.
-
I'm on the fence about this. I like the idea of continuing a movie club, but I really don't like this theme. I find that the originals are always better and I almost never enjoy the remake.
-
True Grit ?
-
Hey, just do it. Other themes might appeal to you more. Can you think of one remake that you feel is better than the original? You can nominate that one.
-
True Grit ?
Bravo. We'll do it!
-
I like the idea of this and might be able to join in some. I just don't know if I could sit through the Cape Fear remake again... :D
But as far as another set of movies, maybe Seven Samurai (1954) and The Magnificent Seven (1960).
-
Okay, you're in Christopher. Do the weeks you can do. Try to make them all, but if you fall off, that's okay. Just like the Eastwood Challenge, you don't win the completion prize if you don't do them all, but you do get to join in and have fun with us when you can.
Will we have prizes? Hmmm... well, there's no end in sight. So, maybe there will be. Maybe there won't. But, as we've seen already -- nothing valuable is exchanging hands anyway -- it's more for just a show of appreciation for completing the project.
I'll write Holden. Reach out to any friends you have that are film fans -- this is open to anyone, new to the board, and old.
OH, and AKA, Christopher's suggestion made me realize that A Fistful of Dollars is actually a remake of Yojimbo, so if you want, we can do that combo for your turn. You like that remake. They're not all bad! ;)
-
KC, I know you're still knee-deep in the 70's with the Eastwood Challenge, but maybe consider this. I'd be interested in watching some of your favorite movies. Coming up soon will be our favorite Foreign film -- but only if they have subtitles. No English or Canadian films allowed. I've already got mine picked out for that theme.
-
How about a foreign film and an American remake? Like Insomnia?
-
How about a foreign film and an American remake? Like Insomnia?
If you'll join us, then yes... because it's you... we can consider the Norwegian (1997) version the "classic" (or in this case, the "original") and the 2002 version the "modern" remake. I like it because although it's not really time-traveling, we will see some great differences that would make very interesting discussion. So yes! O0
-
Of course ... a pairing of Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars would be the same thing! :)
-
Actually, that's true. Yojimbo just feels so much older to me than A Fistful of Dollars, and yet, they're really only four years apart.
-
Then again -- instead of Yojimbo vs. A Fistful of Dollars, we could do A Fistful of Dollars vs. Last Man Standing, the 1996 Bruce Willis film. Or do all three.
-
I like the idea of foreign film against re make....
-
I'm in but can't think of the films right now. I'll be back. :)
-
Awesome! Glad you're in! :)
-
Also, I'll do those that I can. It proved difficult to find some films during the Movie Challenge and even my Eastwood collection is not complete.
I'll do those movies that I can get my hands on.
-
I like the idea of foreign film against re make....
Then let's open it up to that. Instead of "Classic Vs. Modern Remake", we'll have Original and Remake. O0
There are so many great foreign films, I'm going to have a lot of themes with those coming up.
-
Also, I'll do those that I can. It proved difficult to find some films during the Movie Challenge and even my Eastwood collection is not complete.
I'll do those movies that I can get my hands on.
That's perfect. There's no pressure to do everything -- join in when you can. It's fun the more people we have that are participating, so just do the best you can.
-
I should also add that until an official schedule is posted, anyone can go back and edit their suggestions. Once the schedule is posted, it will be fixed, because people may actually purchase something based on the schedule. So, just feel free to edit your post if you come up with a different set of films you'd like us to do.
-
The Vanishing v The Vanishing.. ?
-
Suggestions don't need to be approved, as long as they fit the theme, and they're what you want to suggest - they'll go on the schedule! So, whichever two films you want to do, you choose. But, also give the year for each film (you can find it on the IMDb) so there's no confusion about which films we're going to be watching.
-
I am afraid my little knowledge in movies prevent me to take part :( Anyway I can think of those so far. If you approve, let me know.
Deal M for Murder x A Perfect Murder
Death Game x Knock Knock
-
Hi Aline,
From what I can tell, they are both remakes, so yes they'd fit the theme.
I just want to reiterate that the choices don't need to be approved. I'm only going to organize this and post schedules, everyone who participates gets to think about what films they'd like to share with all of us that fit that theme. This is a democratic movie club -- of the people, by the people, for the people. So, consider what movie you'd like us to watch, and it will go on the schedule.
But everyone needs to narrow it down to one original movie with the remake. So do pick which you'd prefer from those two pairings.
-
The Vanishing (1988) vs. The Vanishing (1993)
-
Okay, Brendan's got The Vanishing films -- Gant, do you want to still do True Grit?
-
Hello all, it has been a very very long time.
Well Willie Wonka is on the horizon, so I can't use that. Gee what a tough question. I am in the camp which suggests leave the classics as they are. Dirty Harry perhaps, just kidding. Sod it lets go for Scarface, again.
Nice to be back
-
Whoa, slacker!!
Welcome back. 8)
Nice to see you around again. O0
-
Slacker! Wow, great to see you. You have the honor of having started one of the oldest and longest running threads on the board "Movies I've Watched This Week" has never left the first page of the OT forum, and is 200 pages long now. Really great to have you back! O0
-
Hey Matt,
Was that really my idea!!!, wow that was 12 years ago, what a warm welcome home.
Reformed slacker.
-
Do you want your Taxi Driver av back? If it's not available, I'll make you one. :)
As for 12 years, you're telling me. Time really flies here.
-
Welcome back, slacker! :)
-
I just checked Slacker's last post - it was 11 years between posts. I think that has to be a record!

I´ll try to join as much as I could (can`t suggest anything at the moment,I´ll get back on that) though I kind of sucked with the Eastwood challenge as I still have not watched all of those films :-[
-
Great, glad to have you join in Hemlock!
A lot of people dropped off with The Eastwood Challenge. The pace was a little quick. I'm hoping with the slower pace, and having it more personalized with member choices, that we might be able to maintain more participation throughout.
-
I just started a locked thread where we can see at a glance what members are participating in this theme, and what movies they've nominated. You can find that here:
http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=10506.msg233531#msg233531
But still use this thread to show you're interested and to tell us what movies you want.
-
Hey thanks Matt,
That does bring back memories, my looks have changed since then ;-)
-
Your new one is cool. 8)
-
I'll go with Deal M for Murder (1954) v A Perfect Murder (1998).
-
I could try to participate. Or at least try to try.
I can rattle off two dozen remakes, but I'll start with two that possibly very few of you have seen either one, so the perspectives on both would be fresh and instant...
Criss Cross
(1949, Robert Siodmak)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZESMg9CrMc
and
The Underneath
(1995, Steven Soderbergh)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGypRYIyr0I
The two versions of The Vanishing are especially interesting because the same man directed both films. This has happened a handful of times over the years. Very similar to George Sluizer directing the Dutch original and the Americanized remake, Ole Bornedal directed his thriller Nattevagten - Nightwatch (1994) as well as its Americanized remake Nightwatch (1997). More recently Takashi Shimizu got to remake his Japanese horror movie Ju-on as The Grudge in America, and Austrian Michael Hanake made the German-language and American versions of Funny Games ten years apart. Michael Mann's Heat (1995) was a remake of his own little-seen made-for-TV movie called "L.A. Takedown" (1989). Even the Master, Alfred Hitchcock remade his own film when he reworked his 1934 thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much into the 1956 Jimmy Stewart/Doris Day flick. Frank Capra remade his 1933 Lady for a Day in 1961 as A Pocketful of Miracles. And another 1930s movie was remade by its director when Yasujiro Ozu turned his Silent The Story of Floating Weeds (1934) into the very colorful Floating Weeds (1959).
-
Fantastic. We knew you'd have some great suggestions for us.
We've had a really good turn-out, so I'll give everyone another week. We'll wait till after the election November 8th, and post the final schedule. So if anyone else still hasn't signed up or pick their movies, do it now.
-
I'm in. At least I'll try real hard. Can't think of any movies right now, but I'll ponder that while I'm working.
-
If I can make suggestions to the ones that haven't decided, Hitchcock's classic Psycho (1960) should have remained untouchable but there is a remake from 1998 starred by Vince Vaughn.
The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) won a remake in 2002, also not good. Originals are always better, I think.
-
Yeah, I'd like to make a few suggestions to those who want to particpate but can't think -- first, check out the list Holden provided. And then, also consider Yojimbo v A Fistful of Dollars v Last Man Standing. We might do all three for that one if anyone wants to name that as their choice.
-
There's actually several movies by Clint we might pick to pair up with non-Clint movies. How about Shane and Pale Rider? Play Misty for Me and Fatal Attraction? The Ox-Bow Incident and Hang 'em High? Maybe even The Hurt Locker and American Sniper?
-

I like Matt's suggestion. Please put my choice down as Yojimbo v A Fistful of Dollars v Last Man Standing. KC has some really great suggestions, but I couldn't make up my mind and I've watched most of them fairly recently. Thank you to those who provide suggestions to people like me who find themselves lacking in good ideas. :)
-
You got it, Elizabeth. Thanks! :)
AKA? Hemlock? Satu?
-
I have no idea what to suggest. The access to films here is not that great at the moment. And my knowledge for this theme is not so good. :-\
-
Okay, let's help Satu out. Either we can skip her choices for this theme, or we can choose one for her.
I have never seen The Ox-Bow Incident or Shane. Would someone like to 2nd one of these two selections from KC:
Shane (1953) and Pale Rider (1985)
The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) and Hang 'em High (1968)
-
The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) and Hang 'em High (1968)
I second that motion! 8)
-
Looks like I'll be going a little longer before seeing Shane, but I can finally cross Ox-Bow Incident off my list soon. Thanks, SK.
-

You're welcome. :)
You won't be disappointed, I rank The Ox - Bow Incident the second best western ever!!
-
I don't know if Satu can use this information, but for those of us in the U.S., at least ... both Shane and The Ox-Bow Incident can be rented to stream from Amazon for about four bucks.
-
You won't be disappointed, I rank The Ox - Bow Incident the second best western ever!!
And it's one of Clint's favorites. :)
-
Thanks KC, I'll check that out. There's also the UK Amazon so I can try that too. :)
-
Hemlock and AKA -- last chance, or we either drop your choices or nominate them for you!
-
I did say that I was on the fence about participating in this, so I'm not sure why I'm definitively added to the schedule. However, I have been doing some thinking. I have a suggestion, but I don't know how easy it would be to get the original Hong Kong film, so I'm not sure if this is a good choice.
Internal Affairs and The Departed (original Hong Kong film v. Martin Scorsese's version)
How easy or difficult do you think it would be to get the original movie? I don't want to choose a film that would not be widely accessible.
-

Because you've been a Member Extraordinaire since 2000, so of course you are.

I own Infernal Affairs (2002) and it's available for rent on Amazon, so I don't think it would be hard for anyone to watch it who wanted to participate. It's a great movie!
I'll put it on the schedule. It looks like we've got plenty of movies for our first theme, so I'll skip one for Hemlock's turn this time around, and post the schedule later tonight or tomorrow. :)
-
The first theme's schedule has been posted HERE (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=10513.0). If you're wondering why I did the order the way I did, I tried to spread out and mix up the themes with westerns and foreign films to keep as much variety as possible as we work through the theme. I'm also going to be away for a few weeks, and I know I won't be watching movies, but I will be commenting, so I put the movies I know well on those weeks so I can still participate when I can't watch.
Start looking into how you want to get the movies (from a library, rental service (Netflix or Amazon), buy the DVD(s) or in some cases if you can't find them any other way, YouTube or via other download service).
I hope everyone that has shown interest here will participate and that this is enjoyable for everyone.
If you didn't sign up or recommend movies, you're still good to jump in and watch and comment on them with us at any time.
-
That's a nice schedule. I've seen 14 of those movies, and there's some that do sound good that I haven't seen before (starting with the Scarface movies actually--okay, I watched part of the Pacino one once...).

The world is yours!
-
I won't take part maybe in the comments. I haven't seen more than half of those movies and honestly haven't interest. Clint challenge that I have all the movies I couldn't do because or I watch a movie for pleasure or not. Under pressure don't work for me. Forgive me guys :(
-
That's fine, Aline. If you want to join in, do. There's no pressure to ever do anything here. It's just for fun. :)
-
I'm going to go ahead and order in Scarface from my work library system since it'll take a few days for it to come in (especially with the Thanksgiving break being upon us). Very cool seeing Boris Karloff's name listed amongst the cast of this!
-
I just pushed back our schedule a couple of weeks, because it looked like all of us got backed up and were still on the Seven Samurai vs. The Magnificent Seven (1960) week. This is also the week we were thinking of adding the brand new Magnificent Seven, if anyone wanted to watch that and add that into the discussion. So, we now have a little more time (a week from today) until our next movies, The Manchurian Candidate (1962 and 2004) start.
The revised schedule is HERE (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=10513.0).
-
I pushed back the schedule a few more weeks, so we're still on The Manchurian Candidate films.
-
I'm more than halfway through The Magnificent Seven. :)
-
Anyone still doing this?
With all my DVDs pack away for renovations and just finding time to watch movies at the moment has become almost impossible. :(
-
I think we all fell off. The theme didn't resonate with most, and those who offered suggestions stopped posting here entirely, so all the enthusiasm fell off. Maybe we can start it up again in the future, just need at least 5 or so people who want to do it.
-
I did finish The Magnificent Seven ... then I hung on to it hoping to get through the commentary track. Finally I gave up and took it back to the library. :-[
I caught the original Manchurian Candidate on TV shortly after the discussion here. What an unbelievable plotline ... People were supposed to imagine that the Russians would secretly attempt to influence a U.S. presidential election in favor of a vainglorious megalomaniac, in the expectation they would be able to manipulate him afterwards? Never happen. ;)
-
I wish I could participate guys, I just have (honestly) NO spare time with work and a 5 year old and an 18 month old running riot :D
Had to post and say that I watched The Manchurian Candidate on blu-ray with my husband the other day (by coincidence) and it just blew me away ... it felt so topical with Trump and everything that's going on right now (as you say KC!) ... what incredible performances too. Have to say (apart from early Sinatra) I am a bigger fan of Sinatra's acting than his singing.
Also fascinating to discover that Laurence Harvey (who also turned in a great performance) was the father of Domino Harvey, the bounty hunter (sadly also deceased) – I love following through degrees of separation like that (I could probably get to Kevin Bacon if I tried ;D).
-

And that's why I wanted to do it. It wasn't just Trump though -- candidate Clinton was every bit as much of a "Manchuarian Candidate", if not more so. One thing for sure, our political system is a wreck with way too much corporate influence, as can be seen in the 2004 Manchuarian Candidate remake.

I loved Harvey's performance, too.
I never heard of Domino Harvey. Interesting, sad story:

I haven't seen the remake. It'll be hard to try and watch it now I know the original is so good!
P.S. Know what you mean about the political system being a wreck ... many people feel that way in Britain :-[

I loved Harvey's performance, too.

The name rang a bell when I remembered there was a film that came out soon after her death starring Keira Knightley as Domino. The wrong choice for actress I think but might be interesting to watch, or a documentary on her life if there is one.
-
Howdy. Is this still going? I’ve had quite a busy year, going back to November, 2016. So much has happened that I just didn’t have time, even with two months short-term disability recently. I always thought this was a good idea and even with my being in the beginning stages of sharing thoughts on a series of films and tv show on Facebook (of which I’m sharing the latter of the two here on the CE Forum), I think I can manage time to participate in this CEWB Movie Club.
-
I was thinking of this too - maybe after we get past all the holidays, we'll come back and put together a schedule again.
-
Okay, we'll be getting a schedule together and getting this started again soon. Should we do a Hitchcock theme, and everyone who is interested can nominate a Hitchcock film for the schedule? Or, should we just do classic films (pre-1950).
-
All classic films I reckon. 8)
-
If we can get AKA to join us, maybe a short Hitchcock season, then move on to "all classics"? (But why not include the 1950s?)
-
I think a Hitchcock theme would be awesome. Reading through the Hitchcock thread, I see that Shadow of a Doubt was recommended to me, and KC said was perhaps Hitch's favorite of his films, and I still haven't watched it.
So, let's get together a list of everyone who's interested in participating, and if you "chime in", list one or two Hitch films you'd like to recommend for the schedule.
-
(But why not include the 1950s?)
The 50's feel so much more modern than films from the 30's and 40's. And then there's another big jump from the 50's to the 60's. So, okay, when we do classics, we will go up to 1959. :)
-
So, let's get together a list of everyone who's interested in participating, and if you "chime in", list one or two Hitch films you'd like to recommend for the schedule.
I’m in.
Sabotage & The 39 Steps
-
I'd be interested in participating in this. When would we be starting this? I'm not really familiar with the baseball season calendar. Everything I know about baseball I learned from "Trouble with the Curve." ;D
-
I'm not really familiar with the baseball season calendar. Everything I know about baseball I learned from "Trouble with the Curve." ;D
The regular season runs through the end of September, then the playoffs continue through October. But the Yankees probably won't get too far this year. But don't mind that, I could make time for a classic movie or two.
-
Okay, if KC is joining us before the end of baseball season, then we can get started earlier! Let's see who else is in and the films they recommend, and I'll get a schedule up.
I'll recommend Rebecca and Spellbound, but want to make sure someone recommends Shadow of a Doubt because I want to see that one. And Notorious is another favorite.
-
I nominate “Rear Window.”
-
I'd be interested in chiming in about some of these movies. But we're not going to do Hitchcock movies from the 1960s or 1970s? (And I realize there's only two movies he did in the '70s) Or do you mean when you switch to just classic movies?
-
Any Hitchcock films are good -- the 60's and later aren't eligible for when we do classic films after Hitch.
-
Great idea, I'd like to participate if I can...
I'd go Rear Window/ Strangers on a Train...
Can Psycho sneak in there... Haven't seen it in ages...
-
Here's what I think we've got so far:
The Schofield Kid: Sabotage, The 39 Steps
Matt: Rebecca, Spellbound
AKA: Rear Window
Gant: Strangers on a Train, Psycho
KC: North by Northwest
Christopher: The Lady Vanishes
Anyone else?
-
I'm not sure offhand if I've ever seen Sabotage. I don't have a rating for it on IMDb, but of course I could have seen it before I had my IMDb account.
I was thinking about mentioning Strangers on the Train, but Gant took care of that one.
I've mentioned my top 5 numerous times, so maybe I'll go outside that list.
The Lady Vanishes
-
The Lady Vanishes
Noted. I haven't seen that one in ages, and it will feel like a first viewing.
-
I would add North by Northwest to the above. 8)
-
I would add North by Northwest to the above. 8)
Got it!
Lots of great Hitch movies still unnominated. Anyone else want to join in?
-
Okay, looks like it's the six of us, unless anyone along the way wants to join in. Anyone can always join in at anytime.
Here's THE SCHEDULE (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=10716.msg238370#msg238370)
-
Fun schedule. I'm surprised no one mentioned Shadow of a Doubt. I thought about it--it's one of my favorites.
-
I meant to add Shadow of a Doubt.
(Edited to italicize! :D )
-
I'd figured you might. I think I own all of those movies--now it's just to find them! :o
-
I also wanted Notorious on here, but figured sneaking in TWO extra would be pushing it.
-
Ooh, I love Notorious. Let's see how we get on ... maybe we'll do a second bonus!
-
Looks good, guys.
-
Ooh, I love Notorious. Let's see how we get on ... maybe we'll do a second bonus!
O0 :)
-
I don't know if I'll participate, but I was already interested in watching The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, and Rebecca. All three of those I've seen and really loved, but it's been a relatively long time since I watched them. The rest of the films I've seen just so many times, or have seen very recently, that I'm not interested in them at this time. But I'm glad some of you who haven't seen them are making it a point to do so.
-
I don't feel I'm in any position to recommend a movie without more of a commitment from me, but if I were to recommend one, it'd been Frenzy. I absolutely love it. It has all of Hitch's trademarks, but it's quite a gritty movie, even though it has plenty of black humor.
-
Jump in whenever you want to, Doug. The commitment needed to join in here is pretty lax. Join in anytime you want, and take off on any of the weeks that you don't want to. And since you've already seen a lot of these films and recently, please feel free to join in the weekly discussions even if you're not watching it that week with us.
As for Frenzy, that's one I haven't seen in about 20 years, so I might want to watch that one again. If we don't all fall apart halfway through like we did on our last Movie Club schedule, we can look at tacking it on at the end. We'll see how many of us continue to go through this over the next three months.
-
Frenzy is a top 5 favorite for me. O0
-
Doug, that video that you posted about "Vertigo" was very interesting, so you're clearly quite knowledgeable about Hitchcock. I'd love to learn more about your insights and the resources that you'd recommend. I'd definitely welcome you participating when you can. I don't think you have to see all the movies to join the discussion and offer your perspective.
-
This will be awesome for me, honestly other than "THE BIRDS" I haven't really watched an Hitchcock film with a scrupulous eye....looking forward to it. Count me in. :)
-
Yessss! BDC28 is in da house! 8)

BDC, welcome! I am really happy that you are joining us. I am definitely looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these films.

Don't tell me we've already fallen apart on only our third week of movies. We've got about 9 weeks left.
-
I will be watching and commenting on Rebecca early next week, when the DVD comes. And I hope to get to North by Northwest very soon, I have that one!
-

I’m still planning on participating by watchimg some of these movies. At a minimum, I’ll bewatching North by Northwest, Marnie, and likely, Psycho.
-
I don't have all the movies. I was able to borrow three that I didn't have. Unfortunately Rebecca wasn't one of them.
-
It's too bad Rebecca doesn't seem to be available from a streaming outlet.
-
Netflix Australia have very few films from before 1970. Very disappointing.
-
Netflix in the US has very few films before 1970 too. If a library is convenient to you, they should have these films.
-
We're about halfway through our Hitchcock film series. I'm enjoying watching all these films again, so even with the low participation, it's been fun. We can even maybe tack on Notorious at the end as a third bonus just because it's so great. :)
-
I may not get to view these films in their designated week but I'm tracking the ones I don't own down. Finally borrowed a copy of Rear Window this week. 8)
-
Oh, please, do add Notorious!
I'm running about a week behind, but I do intend to see them all. :)
-
Oh, please, do add Notorious!
Anything for you. ;) It's on the schedule. We're gonna stay busy right up to the week of Christmas now.

Great! Jump in any time! O0
-
I still plan on watching several of these Hitchcock movies, but not until after Thanksgiving.
-
I hope to watch a few coming up here too.
-
I'm through Paycho, and started The Lady Vanishes tonight. I'm sorry I'm not finding more time to comment about them as I watch.
-
The threads will be open if you feel like adding your thoughts later. I'm keeping up, but I hate being the only person commenting. I am through Spellbound now.
-
I'd like to continue watching, but I think I'm too far behind to see them all and keep to the timelines. Among the ones that have passed that I haven't yet seen, which one is the best? I'll watch that one next!
-
Rebecca!
-
Good Idea, but some of us are not in the US. but good job!
-
nyna, it's so nice to hear from you! I'm sorry we missed your birthday this year. I hope it was a happy one! :)
If you get a chance to watch any of these Hitchcock movies, we'd be happy to hear your comments.
-
Just want to report that I'm all caught up through Strangers on a Train, which I watched via my Google account. (I discovered belatedly that Google Play has quite a few of these, including two others I didn't have on hand.)
There's not a single one I didn't enjoy re-watching (I have seen them all at one time or another), some more than others. If I get a chance I'll try to add some thoughts in the respective threads. :)
-
Great! I just got around to watching Shadow of a Doubt tonight, my first viewing of it. I'm all caught up too -- it's been great visiting (or revisiting) all these fantastic films.
-
I am now caught up through Marnie. Matt, are we maybe going to add another bonus film or two? How about The Birds?
-
I'd be up for watching "The Birds," since that's a pretty famous movie. Also, I liked "North by Northwest," but haven't fully enjoyed most of the other films, which is why I haven't participated much in this discussion. It's tough for me to write analytical reviews on films that I'm not passionate about.
For those of you that are familiar with his work, are there any that you'd recommend that are similar to "North by Northwest" or that are likely to be enjoyable for someone who enjoyed that film?
-
The Hitchcock film that's most similar to North by Northwest is probably The 39 Steps, but I take it that one didn't appeal to you?
You might like To Catch a Thief, which also has Cary Grant and a beautiful blonde in a spectacular setting. I'd be happy to add that one as an extra bonus.
-
I haven't seen "The 39 Steps," so I'll look into that one. I've read about "To Catch A Thief" and it sounds like something I might enjoy, so I'm willing to give it a shot if everyone else wants to watch that one too. Bonus for young and crazy people like me: It's in color! :)

Sure, I've just extended the schedule to include both of these. I put To Catch a Thief for this week, and The Birds as our finale the following week.

Cool. I have these two on DVD. 8)

With the help of youtube I'm going to get to view all the films in the challenge. The three films I didn't have or couldn't borrow, are available on youtube and I only have Spellbound to view and the final 2 bonus films which I said I have on DVD.
I know we haven't had a lot of participation in this challenge but I hope we can do another this year. Maybe classic films like Matt mentioned even though AKA doesn't like B&W films. :P

Pay no attention to the crazy man behind the curtain! I'm sure we can do a mixture of both B&W and color movies.

Okay, let's start throwing some ideas out for a Classic Film Fest. I mentioned two Cary Grant films, Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story (which is just as much a James Stewart film, and both of these also star the gorgeous Katharine Hepburn). Charade was mentioned earlier in this thread, and I have never seen it. So that sounds like a good one.
Not sure when we'll be up for starting this, but if you think of films you'd like to nominate, add them here. We can do them from the beginning of film, all the way through to.... 1959.
(EDIT: Just looked up Charade and see it was released in 1963. That's a bit modern for a classic film. But, if anyone wants to give me ideas on when they think we should cut off the eligibility year, pipe up.)

According to Netflix, when you search Classic films on their search engine, films from the 1980's appear!! :o
-
Gotta have some Jimmy Cagney films on there. White Heat & One, Two, Three, are two favorites of mine. 8)

Casablanca is a must!

Sounds great! I haven't seen One, Two, Three. Angels with Dirty Faces is my favorite Cagney film.

Sounds like the same generation that thinks Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." is a classic album. But, for me, classic films go back not just to a year, but to a mindset: gangster films where a gun holds no more than 6 bullets, romance instead of sex, and dialogue over action. When did this really change? I think sometime in the 1950's or early 1960's.
-

AKA, would you be interested in watching a film, maybe just to experience some cinematic history, if it was a silent film?
-
"Gangster films where a gun holds no more than 6 bullets"? I thought one of the hallmarks of the classic gangster film was the Thompson submachine gun (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Thompson_Submachine_Gun) ... familiarly called the Tommy gun.

Some suggestions might come from here:

-
I nominate "12 Angry Men" and "Lawrence of Arabia."

Do you have a particular film that you're thinking about? It is not a classic film, but "The Artist" was both black and white AND a silent film, so of course, I haven't seen it! I did have a friend who watched "The Artist" who said that they really enjoyed it. I don't know if I could get through a completely silent film though.
The closest I ever got to that was watching "All Is Lost," with Robert Redford, which had little to no dialogue, but there was sound since the film was about Robert Redford's battle, I think, to keep his ship from sinking.
-
I've been really bad about pretty much every movie club or movie challenge activity we've done on this board, but another possible title you might consider for a classics movie club could be The Invisible Man (1933). It's my favorite of all the old Universal monster movies.
-
The Artist was good but if we’re talking silent films, it’s Chaplin or nothing!! 8)

Murnau? Griffith? Dreyer? Heck, even Buster Keaton?
Not a big fan of Chaplin's. Though, truth to tell, I'm not much a fan of silent films altogether, even the real "classics."
-
Do you have a particular film that you're thinking about?
Yes, I was actually thinking of a Chaplin film -- City Lights, which is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I've championed this film to others, and it has such broad appeal -- my parents loved it, people my age love it, and kids love it too. It's hard not to love Chaplin -- and this is my favorite of his. KC brought up some other great options, but another favorite of mine is Harold Lloyd, particularly Safety Last.
Since the Movie Club is for sharing our appreciation of certain films with others who haven't yet seen them -- I think I would love to nominate at least one of these two films. They're really fun, and again -- it's amazing to step back in time and witness history.
-
I’d like to start talking about this challenge again. I’d prefer it to be pre 1970 films only.

2 years later and is anyone interested in a classic film challenge?
My movie viewing has all but dried up lately. I need some motivation. :(

Sounds good to me... 👍
