It may be a little while until we see a 2018 release but this is the thread for discussion of the films released this year. Anyone have any upcoming films that they're really looking forward to?
-
The 3:10, I mean, The 15:17 to Paris! :D
-
I saw The Commuter last night. Liam Neeson plays a... well, a commuter who is propositioned to find someone on the train that doesn't belong, and he'll get a lot of money in return. It's a good thriller with some nice twists and turns.

A.E.K. an underdog Greek basketball team founded in 1924 from refugees from Constantinople, after 50 years beats SLAVIA of Prague and wins the European Cup.
A movie based on my favorite team, what better can a fan expect,but...A.E.K. (athletic union of Constantinople) is something more than a club.It exists if only to remind our parents motherland , the lives they had to leave behind when expatriated from the Turks and start all over in a new ground.
A.E.K. represents the memories and the culture of these people ...

Maybe I’m getting superhero movie burnout. I wasn’t planning on seeing this on the big screen. I figured I’d just skip it and catch it later on cable or disc. I was making plans to see The 15:17 To Paris and before I knew it, was caught up in committing to seeing this on IMAX.
I’m glad I did. I thought the story was very good and it held my interest. Once again, Marvel hits one out of the park with a very entertaining film.

Black Panther is one of my favorite Marvel movies.
I'm curious about the next Avengers movie, since it appears like they've thrown in just about everyone they could. It seems like there could be too many characters in it, but I'm interested in seeing if it works or not (it very well could work just fine).

Very good. Worthy remake of the original. By no means better. But enjoyable, unlike Last Man Standing.

I'm curious about the new Death Wish. I'll check it out sometime here. I noticed it's based on the original movie, instead of being a new adaptation of the book (I've read the book before, and it's good). I guess I haven't watched it already because I'm a big Bronson fan, and the original is such an iconic movie for him.

Some recent noteworthy 2018 movies I've seen have been I Can Only Imagine and A Quiet Place. Two totally different types of movies, both excellent. O0

I want to see A Quiet Place... Looks good

Avengers: Infinity War

Deadpool 2

A lot of black humour, a lot of gore and a few inside jokes.
Highly recommended O0

Has anyone else seen Isle of Dogs yet? I thought it was excellent. Took my five-year-daughter a couple of weeks ago and she loved it too. In fact tonight she was talking about it. I would probably rank it near the bottom of Wes Anderson's films, but that's only because I love all his films so much. And even if you don't care for Anderson's style, you might still like this one.

Watchable but far from great. The new Han simply does not have Ford`s charisma.

Sadly, it seems like Disney is really only making these Star Wars movies for the money. "Force Awakens" was entertaining but basically a rehash of "A New Hope" with a female hero in place of Luke. "Rogue One" was decent, but "The Last Jedi" was, in my opinion, terrible, and this doesn't look good to me either.
I was hoping when they rebooted the franchise that that they would have a strong narrative direction that was motivating the reboot, but there really appears to be no coherent, cohesive story arc to these new movies and all Disney appears to care about is cashing in on the legacy of "Star Wars" while making movies that really add nothing to the original movies which were made decades ago.
What does everyone else think?

I saw Isle of Dogs too and liked it. Not too long after seeing it, I finally watched The Fantastic Mr. Fox. I think I've seen all of Anderson's movies now. My favorites are still Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.

I saw "Black Panther" and hated it. I really don't understand why it got praised so highly.
-
Wow....I havnt seen it yet, I had a bit of a binge on Super heroes recently, some were ok, some not so...
Panther was praised so highly I've had high expectations.... What was wrong with it AKA.. ?
-
AKA isn't the only one. I stopped it at the one hour point. I've been meaning to get back to it, but I wasn't really invested in it at all. Don't know if I'll ever finish it.
-
My brother and best friend also saw "Black Panther" and didn't like it. But, I must confess, I'm not the typical audience for this type of movie, so my perspective may not be representative. I liked the Nolan Batman movies and the original Spiderman movie, but I wouldn't consider comic books movies to be a favorite genre.
-
I thought Black Panther was very good. O0
I saw Ocean's 8 today and enjoyed it. I've only seen the remake of Ocean's 11 once, and that was back when it first came out. I haven't seen the sequels to it.
I'll probably check out The Incredibles 2 soon.
-
I enjoyed Death Wish but do agree Bronson rules. Still, I'm hoping for sequels. I wonder why Statham didn't star as he did in the other Bronson remake, The Mechanic. Avengers Infinity War and Deadpool 2 were worth the price of admission.
I did enjoy Black Panther but my expectations were very low. I go to most of the super hero movies with various friends and family and was going to let this one pass me by. I'm glad I didn't. Still, not sure I'll go out of my way to see it again and won't buy it on blu ray as I have with the Nolan Batman series (loved the character of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises too much not to so decided to get the trilogy) and Man Of Steel, Wonder Woman and Justice League. I don't want to start collecting them because there's to many but may get a some of the Marvel comic book movies because they're damn good; X-Men Days Of Future Past, The Avengers (1st one only), Captain America Civil War and the first Guardians Of The Galaxy film.
I plan on taking Nicholas and Nina to Solo this weekend. I hope we enjoy it. Should be interesting, anyway. We may see The Incredibles 2 sometime soon, also and looking forward to that.

I enjoyed the first one.It was campy but fun to watch. The sequel suffers from a weak script but most of all from the fact that it takes itself more serious than it deserves.
-

I enjoyed Solo and Rogue One about the most of any of the new ones, and yet they could easily be considered just money grabs.

It’s easy to blame Disney/Lucas and Paramount when sub-par quality is delivered with respect to Star Wars and Star Trek. To quote Elvis Presley, “You gotta take the bad with the good.” As fans, we expect the best but have to realize that that is unrealistic. Nobody, I mean nobody produces and delivers 100% greatness all of the time. Impossible. Did Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood deliver 100% greatness with the so-called “Spaghetti Western” trilogy? You bet your sweet ass they did! So, the bar was raised and with that comes happiness when similar product is presented, but negativity when poor similar quality is produced. What matters is appreciating the best of the best and even enjoying the best qualities of the worst where possible. In my opinion, The Beatles are probably the only thing in entertainment that ever came (or ever will come) the closest to 100% greatness. They had their faults and shortcomings but are acknowledged as one of, if not THE greatest rock band in history. Not bad for a band only together ten years. It took The Rolling Stones decades more to achieve even a hint of that kind of recognition! What matters most, is personal preference. In the end, regardless of accomplishments and accolades, it all comes down to what you like above and beyond anything else.

WOW !!!
Not quite sure what to say about this one..I certainly dont want to spoil it for anyone..
I can see echo's of The Shining in it... It's a horror for sure, but a whole lot more than that. Fantastic acting and at times quite disturbing... second half doesnt quite live up to first.. but its still a very very good film..
One of those films your still thinking about days after you've seen it.. whether you want to or not !

That one certainly looks freaky. I'd probably have bad dreams about that little girl making that clicking (or clucking?) sound. ;D

Not that good...
I didn't mind it. I've watched all five films over the last few weeks. My wife hadn't seen any of them and they were a little "intense" for her. She much prefers rom coms or period pieces.
The films are getting a little stale though. Did anyone else stick around till after the final credits and see that 10 second clip of what we can expect from the next installment. That's a little idiosyncrasy of mine when I see a film in the cinema. I have to wait until that MPAA certificate number comes up before I leave my seat.
3/5.
-
I also wait until the very last of the final credits have finished rolling!
-
Same here..
-
I also often do that, but usually only for movies that I enjoy. Its my way of paying my respects to those lesser known faces who otherwise receive no recognition for their role in the making of a film.
-
I just like to take some time to absorb what I've just watched before breaking the spell..
-
Yeah, this one kinda sucked. Disappointing.

I saw this as well and didnt really liked it either. I wasnt a huge fan of the first film, but it was far better than this sequel. This movie had a very weak story. It seems like they just made it hoping to capitalize on the success of the first movie rather than because they had a story arc that they wanted to complete. I actually was more interested in seeing the ant man movie, but I have MoviePass and didnt feel it was worth the extra $5 due to the surge pricing they applied because it was a popular movie to see at that time. This was the only movie playing at the same time, so I decided to give it a shot.
-
You pay more to see more popular movies?! Is that part of MoviePass?
-
When I signed up, it was $10 a month amd you could see a movie per day. Within the past couple of weeks, since they are in debt, they added surge pricing, so in addition to the monthly fee, they now charge a surcharge depending on the movie, the location, and how in demand the movie is at the time. The fee can vary based on those factors. You can avoid it by just seeing a different movie or the same movie at a different day and time. Its annoying, since thats not how it ran originally, but movies here are $15 a ticket, so Im still saving money, and as a result, am willing to deal with it.
-
I took Tina to see this Friday night and we enjoyed it very much.

I saw "Three Identical Strangers," which is a documentary about three twins that were separated at birth and did not know that the others existed until they were college-aged. The reasons that they were separated is quite shocking and the documentary provokes a thought-provoking discussion on nature v. nurture.
I also saw "Searching," which was a film that is almost entirely made with what looks like hand-held cameras. It works quite well as a thriller, which is surprising, as most of the movie is viewed through the computer screen. The plot is about a father trying to find his missing daughter and his attempts to aid in the investigation of what may have happened to her and why.
Since these are not well known movies, I'm linking to the trailers for both of these. For those that are interested in the documentary but want to save some money, I heard that CNN is planning on showing "Three Identical Strangers" on their channel in January:

As for documentarys.. I'd definitely recommend "The Keepers" over on Netflix..

Wow, I haven’t gone out of my way to see a horror movie since Hannibal in 2001 and prior to that, Halloween 5 in 1989. I’m not a fan of the genre, but made an exception for my smokin’ hot date that night in the 80’s. As for Hannibal, I’d gone to check it out with my then brother-in-law for a couple of reasons. First, we both enjoyed Silence Of The Lambs very much and second, my then wife and I had been to a church in Italy that appears in the film. It was exciting to recognize it on the big screen and say, “Hey! I was there!”
In one of the early scenes, Hannibal slices open one of his victims and his blood and guts are shown splashing down to the street below, from high above a balcony. I couldn’t stop laughing! I was cracking up into the next scene, thinking I might be asked to leave.
So, aside from it not being a preferred movie genre, my reaction to that scene sealed my fate with respect to seeing horror films. ...Until now.
For the past few years ...hmm, since experiencing separation and then divorce, along with some other unpleasant situations, I’ve considered revisiting the genre on the big screen.
As it turns out, The Nun was a perfect choice. I did react as I had anticipated, but didn’t laugh so loud as to disrupt the other patrons. My ex-wife’s Uncle Andy was curious, too and we decided to see it last night. We both enjoyed it very much. It wasn’t an outrageously silly, ridiculous scare fest but there was plenty of blood and gore. Just enough to whet my appetite for more.
Not sure I’ll be seeing a lot in the upcoming months, but I may give the latest Halloween film a try. If you’re into these kinds of films, I recommend The Nun.

I saw "The Old Man and the Gun." It's a nice, sweet, charming little movie. The best parts about it are Redford's scenes with Sissy Spacek, but neither the film or Redford's performance are particularly groundbreaking. I think "The Mule" will be much better. It looks like a much more interesting movie.

I enjoyed the new Halloween, but I'm not sure how I'd rate it against all the other sequels. Parts 2-4 were all pretty good. There was some genuinely creepy things in this new one.
I also caught Venom the other day, and I had a lot of fun with that one too. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, so it was better than I thought it'd be.
-
I am refusing the Halloween series this round....
Michael is a MINIMUM by the timeline 61 years old.
I mean can a 61 year old maniac still be that strong? Swinging an ax that long has to cause arthritis in the shoulder.
Just saying....his mask should have age lines.
-
Agreed.... And those William Shatner masks would be quite hard to come by now..

Yeah, he'd be 61. I don't think he's been swinging anything for the last 40 years (in this movie anyhow), but he's still strong.
His mask has most definitely aged.

Directed by Steve McQueen

From the director of 12 Years A Slave. Easily my film of the year so far.. and I doubt it'll be topped.. and again featuring an absolutely amazing cast..
A gang are all shot and killed during an attempted robbery.. Their four widows are left behind with nothing in common except a debt and a plan.. Compassionate and whip smart movie..

What a great film. To me, the best Rock & Roll biopic to date.

I saw Creed II a few days ago and enjoyed it as well. Not as much as Creed, but still enjoyable. It's very predictable but the performances from the whole main cast make it worthwhile.
I was thinking about the title... I guess it could also be considered Rocky VIII. Or Rocky IV Part II. :D ;D (Creed II is better than Rocky IV at least)
I know Matt loves Rocky as well. Have you seen the Creed movies?

Interestingly I just read (Sight and Sound) that Clint passed on Forrest Tuckers memoirs which have now been made as
The Old Man & the Gun..

Do you have a link to this article? I read that Eastwood refused to read the script since the writer didn’t have an agent. Is that what the referenced article stated as well or did Eastwood actually read the script and still decline the project? For what it’s worth, although I do like Redford and felt he was perfectly cast, I thought that The Mule was a much more entertaining film.

This was good. A gamble, but worth it.

I would'nt know how to link AKA (damn internet ;) )
Its in the review for the Redford film in Jan's Sight & Sound mag
The direct quote is
"Grann notes that Tucker's expansive memoirs were rejected by Clint Eastwood, among others"
Originally from David Grann's New Yorker source article apparently..

Here is a link to the original New Yorker article by David Grann:

I'll quote the entire paragraph that mentions Clint:
In 1993, he was released, at the age of seventy-three, and settled into the peach-colored house in Pompano Beach, which his wife had bought for them. He polished his manuscript and set up a music room in the den, where he gave saxophone and clarinet lessons for twenty-five dollars an hour. “We had a wonderful life,” his wife said. Tucker recalls, “We used to go out dancing. She’d dress up real pretty, and I’d show her off.” He composed music for her. “He has all these talents that had been wasted all these years,” she told me. From time to time, he played in local jazz clubs. “I got used to being free,” he says. But his manuscript failed to captivate people as he had hoped it would—“I called Clint Eastwood’s secretary, but she said, ‘Unless you have an agent, he won’t read it’ ”—and the author of “The Can Opener” increasingly seemed trapped, an ordinary old man.
This was before his last series of bank robberies, at the age of 78. I haven't seen The Old Man and the Gun, so I don't know how the movie version fits in.

Matt might have missed this from this thread, so I'll repeat it here.
I saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse yesterday... actually I was planning on seeing The Mule but got out of a meeting a little later than I figured, so I saw Spider-Man, which I was also wanting to see anyhow. I'd say it's one of the best overall Spiderman movies I've seen. I don't know comic books very well, and had never heard of Miles Morales as Spiderman... and then I just looked him up and saw he was only created in 2011!

YES! I loved Creed II. It's great nostalgia but also a good movie in its own right. Most surprising moment: seeing Brigitte Nielsen bringing back Ludmilla Drago. It just shows what's most important to Stallone is his love for these Rocky films, and giving the fans what we want in them. He could have easily left her out and no one would have even noticed. But, the minute the camera showed her, the theater rumbled-- easily recognizing her. (She was 7-8 months pregnant at the time of filming -- at the age of 54!)

Michael B. Jordan carries this franchise well, and again I see a correlation between Stallone and his Rocky charcter when Rocky said to Adonis: "This is your time now". It felt like Stallone just handed over the reins of this franchise to him. But, if there's a Creed III, Sly will be in it.

How could anyone get pregnant at 54? That has to be some kind of record. How did this happen?

Hi Aka, I just edited your post to put the [ end quote ] notation at the end of my quote so board members would see your comment better.
I read up on this because I thought (while recognizable) that she hadn't aged very well, and that's when I saw she was 7-8 months pregnant at the time of the filming. She said she had her eggs frozen at the age of 40, and did IVF, with a 3% to 4% chance of success, and beat the odds. She also had a rather hard life since her "fall from grace" after her divorce from Stallone, and has been fighting alcohol addiction for decades. From what I remember, they went through a really ugly divorce, so it was big of both of them to appear in this together.

So did she have the baby? How is it? ???

If she froze her eggs at 40, that sounds more realistic. I did have a friend who gave birth around 41 or 42. I think after that, the chances of getting pregnant are small, and after 45, its practically impossible for almost everyone, so I was shocked that at 54 she was able to have a child.

The baby is healthy! This article talks a bit about the pregnancy:
After more than 10 years of trying to conceive through in vitro fertilization and told she had only a slim chance of getting pregnant, Nielsen and her husband, Italian model Mattia Dessi, 39, are now glowing in newborn bliss.
“She’s healthy, and she’s beautiful,” Nielsen, now 55, says of Frida in this week’s issue of PEOPLE. “I’ve gotten everything that I wished for.”

Finally saw Black Panther and enjoyed it, tho I'm not a big super hero movie fan..

I take it we're all old enough to know who Laurel and Hardy are ??

I went in feeling this was going to be bad but I was pleasantly surprised. Emily Blunt is no Julie Andrews but I found the film to be good fun. Great song and dance numbers through out and lots of familiar faces in the cast including a couple of golden oldies. My favourite number was the Meryl Streep song "Turning Turtle".
4/5.

The best film I've seen in ages. Drama, mixed with some comedy. Set in 1962, a whole different America back then. Just a well written and acted film all round.
5/5.

The Sisters Brothers

The best thing I can say for this one is,that it is boring. I'm a huge fan of the genre and this film has got nothing to offer.A shame...

Saw this last night. Very good.
