"Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates and Clint Eastwood Land in the Oscar Race"

You might have to have seen Paul Walter Hauser speak in the Q&A to get just how different, exacting and ó frankly ó astonishing his performance is as Richard Jewell. I kept waiting for him to drop the ball, to somehow slip out of character but he never does. It is SO good, in fact, that you really do believe this is how he talks in real life.

Hello everybody,
This year, it seems that the Oscars front-runners are The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917 and A Marriage Story.
So, what do you think about the Oscars chances of Richard Jewell movie ?
Would you see it at the Golden Globes ?
And how enthusiastic you are before the release of Richard Jewell ?

I'm not expecting the film to get any Academy Award nominations. Great if it does but I wouldn't get your hopes up. The trailer didn't grab me and the poster wasn't anything special and the film isn't released down here till February so I'm not that excited.

I'm totally positive. tracking down so many critics and awards analysts, I can tell that Richard Jewell has got so much attention from guilds members. especially the performances of the movie have been hailed as one of the bests of the year for each one. Paul Walter Hauser is completely in the discussion and oh yes, Kathy Bates too. She has delivered a powerhouse artwork. this upcoming week will be the week of NBR and AFI top10 films of the year announcements and I'm pretty sure Richard Jewell has a solid chance to get in there. we will see.

p.s. Awards chances are not determined by poster or trailer.

I agree with SK. The days of Eastwood or his films being nominated for any major Academy Awards is most likely over. The sooner that the Oscar bloggers and Eastwood fans get the message on that, the better, so we won't have to continue engaging in these incessant conversations about whether a film will or will not be nominated every single time Eastwood makes a film. Eastwood has simply fallen out of favor with the Academy, and his post-Gran Torino work is not up to the same calibre as movies that were nominated and won Oscars like "Unforgiven," "Mystic River," and "Million Dollar Baby." He didn't even get nominated for acting for "Gran Torino," a nomination that he should have, in my opinion, received. I'd love to be proven wrong though!

The only reason that he did get a Best Picture nomination for "American Sniper" was because it was the number 1 box office champ for that year, and the Academy couldn't deny that level of success, but since he didn't get a Best Director nomination, that was a sign that he didn't have as much clout with the Academy as he has in years past. He does still have the ability to do well with audiences though. I can't think of a single other actor who could have made "The Mule" at 88 and made $170+ million at the box office.

I already gave my opinions on this upcoming movie. I think the hardcore Eastwood fans will go see it, but I think the movie will be dismissed by the Oscar elite and I do agree Eastwood's days as far as getting accolades are over. They have been anyway. It just shows the stupidity and politics of everything, but in the long run I doubt Eastwood cares anyway....By the way AKA.... Eastwood not getting nominated for Best Actor for GT was totally bogus. He absolutely deserved that......

Actually I've never felt that Gran Torino deserved any nominations. It's a fine movie, but I didn't think it'd be nominated for anything.

AKA, I also wouldn't say that American Sniper got a nomination because it was such a big hit. I suppose that could have swayed voters to nominate it, but it doesn't seem to be an automatic for the biggest movie of the year to get a best picture nomination.

I'm looking forward to Richard Jewell. Some of the performances look really good, so if the movie is good, I'd say there was a chance for it to get some nominations (like maybe for Paul Walter Hauser).

When we talk about accolades or awards or nominations, we don't necessarily mean only the OSCARS. American Sniper didn't get a single nomination at golden globes or Bafta. but the academy recognized it with 6 noms. it's clear that Clint has got so many lovers in the academy, yet. of course, it was 5 years ago.

When I say accolades I'm talking about recognition. I'm not talking about Oscars. There is big difference. I'm not one of those who thinks every time Eastwood does a movie he should be nominated. I never thought Unforgiven should had won for Best Picture by any stretch but that's my opinion. After Gran Torino I do have to agree Eastwood's movies have been spotty and I only liked Sniper. The Mule was okay, so that's a decade of movies. I do feel after his RNC performance that pretty much created a derision against Eastwood unfortunately. Does Eastwood care?..Probably not. Do I hope Jewell is a good movie and people will go see it and myself as well?... Absolutely....

With Richard Jewell, that decade of movies seems to be over and it already has gained recognition. currently, it holds 93% of approval on rotten tomatoes. and with NBR and AFI coming this week, we can see how this will turn out.

I agree with the fact that Clint is no more the Oscars darling he was 15 years ago.
But Richard Jewell has its chances, particularly in the acting department.
About Gran Torino and American Sniper, maybe they came in the Oscars race too late.
If you remember, these movies were released in selected theaters before being widely released.
Clint should have been nominated for Gran Torino in the Best Actor category at least.
He was named Best Actor by the National Board of Review for portraying Walt Kowalski.
Maybe the role he played in Gran Torino was too close to the role he played in Million Dollar Baby and for which he got nominated. I donít know.
Clint should have been nominated for his role in The Mule too.
This year, Richard Jewell would be the surprise, if it was generally well received by the critics.

Another accolade for Paul Walter Hauser - from the Hollywood Critics Association - for "his career-defining
performance as Richard Jewell. "

This is definitely a good sign, but NBR loves Eastwood and always has, so it's too soon to tell if this will be representative of the Oscars or other major awards like the Golden Globes.

I agree with you, AKA23.
NBR loves Eastwood and the NBR winners donít reflect the Oscars winners. Not always at least.
For NBR, Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima were the best pictures in 2003 and 2006 respectively but didnít win the Best Film Oscar. Among the last Best Picture Oscar winners, only Greenbook, Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men were also the best pictures for NBR.
We have to wait the Golden Globes, the DGA and the SAG nominations, in order to have a better idea of what the Oscars nominations would look like.
However, the presence of Richard Jewell among the NBR winners is encouraging.

With AFI and NBR, two of the most prestigious circles of critics, academians, professionals, and cinema lovers recognizing Richard Jewell as one of the very best films of the year, we can easily admit that Richard Jewell is a welcomed comeback to form for Clint Eastwood and it is amazing.

+
remember the time we were all full of doubt as it was announced that Clint has cast Paul Walter Hauser as Richard Jewell? and now, everyone, even the critics who disliked the movie, confesses that he not only delivered one of the best performances of the year but also he is dominant in the movie. so, Clint knows. we know nothing.

I did a quick glance through the Golden Globe nominations, and Kathy Bates was nominated for supporting actress in any movie.

That is, she was nominated for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture" for her work in Richard Jewell ... odd title for an award.

Yeah, and a bit odd they lump all movies in together for the supporting actor awards.

Kathy Bates was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but as many of us expected, both the film and Eastwood were otherwise shut out. This was the only nomination for the film.

I think not. Old Eastwood alum Laura Dern ("A Perfect World")  seems to have the Oscar in the bag for "Marriage Story." It's on Netflix if you haven't seen it.

well, this is the first acting nomination in a Clint Eastwood movie after American Sniper. And it's a female one. the last one was Angelina Jolie in Changeling. Eastwood has a ridiculous record of his actors getting Oscar nominations. 12 actors have been nominated for an Oscar in his films. 5 have won it. and now 4th acting nomination of Kathy Bates. stellar career.

It must be good for the movie.. Even if only to generate some extra interest when it's released on dvd or streamed...

Laura Dern really cleaned up a lot of supporting actress awards for that role. I figured Bates's award was being nominated.
