Title: Board freaking out
Post by: Brendan on August 24, 2003, 12:47:18 PM
I've been trying to get on the board here a few times today and it kept telling me "Cannot Find Server" with one of those usual messages.

When I finally made it on, and I would click on a topic, I got the same thing.

Anyone else having these problems?

Yeah, KC, mgk and I are having the same trouble.  You're not alone.  We'll give it some more time to work itself out and then if it doesn't, we'll write Cal and see if it's something he needs to look into.

Hey Matt,
I have trying to change my profile pic using the http stuff, but have been unable to put a "Josey Wales" pick in its place. Can you help me? ;D

There's lots of avatars in THIS (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=82) thread. There's five from Josey Wales in the first post on the first page... you may want to check there.  You'll need the URL of the picture you want to use. You can get that by right clicking on the picture and selecting "Properties" then look for "address" or "URL" and highlight the entire URL with your mouse and right-click again and select "copy".

To add this URL to your profile, click on the "Profile" link at the top of the main page of the web board, and re-enter your password (you always need to add that when you update your profile).  Go down to the section where it says "Personalized Picture" and look for a checkbox where it will say "I have my own pic."  Click on that box to put a checkmark in.  Then go to the field next to it, and right-click and then select "Paste" and the URL that you chose should go into that field.  Then, scroll to the bottom and click "Change profile" and you should be all set.  When you go back to the board, make sure it's working for you. If you're still having trouble, write me off the board.

Oh well, my evil gemini twin >:( is somehow preventing my ability to place a new pic in my profile  :-\although instructed on how to do this! I will keep trying ;)

Anyone have any trouble getting on the board today.
I tried at about 8:15p.m our time which was almost two hours ago from this post and I couldn't get on.I kept getting "Cannot finder Server" page.I even tried the computer in the lounge room with the same result.
I came back about an hour later and everything is fine.Just wondering if I was the only one.

G'day tgy, I could get on OK but it was VERY slow and a post I sent took about 10 minutes to appear on the board.

I did notice that the board seemed slow last night when I was on. I figured it was my computer.

It wasn't just you.  I was trying to get into the board at the same time, but couldn't.  The rest of the site was fine.

It's happened to me about a half dozen times in the past week.I just the back button on my screen and everything seems alright.

Should I contact the administrator?

tgy, I've noticed the same thing and I think several of us said we had when we were chatting the other night.

I'd assumed it has something to do with the changes Cal recently made. If it continues, I guess we should call it to his attention.

It happens when you click a button or a link, but as you say, if you hit the back button, all is back to normal.

Yes I have seen it quite often too and thought it was the fault of my broadband connection.    Since Orange has taken over Wannado there have been a lot of problems so I just put it down to that.    Fortunately it is so easily corrected and you don't lose a post or a PM.   Maybe there are gremlins in the new smilies.    (http://www.discodelic.netfirms.com/happy-snicker.gif)

Maybe there are gremlins in the new smilies.

I think that could be it.

I've gotten that screen several times. In fact, recently when the board seemed to be down, that was the screen I kept getting. As of late, when it happens, I usually just refresh the page and it's okay.

The board is running slower then usual for me and sometimes when I click on a topic I'll get that white screen that says "Internal Error". Anyone else been having problems lately?

Post by: The Schofield Kid on October 12, 2006, 05:27:09 PM
I couldn't get on at all a couple of night's ago,but everything seems fine now.I still get that "Internal Error" message occassionally.

tgy's "a couple of nights ago" may coincide with my Wednesday morning, when I couldn't get on here at all. It's been fine for me since then though, except for a couple of "internal errors."

O.k, now I'm seriously concerned.Last night,I couldn't get on the forums for 4 and a half hours. From 6:00p.m(14 hours ago) to 10:30p.m when I finally gave up and I couldn't even get on to the main website's page.Obviously I wasn't trying for all that time as I left it for a couple of hours and came back hoping it was back to normal.

I've noticed this morning that there were no posts during that time but that just may have been a coincidence and it was only myself having this trouble.

I know I used to joke about being addicted to this site, but man was I jumperty(is that a word) for all that time.

Well, I was asleep 14 hours ago, but I know the board was down between at least 8:30 and 9:30 AM, my time (10-11 hours ago). I notified Cal, but by the time he checked, it was working again. I'll send him another report.

I just viewed some topics and then left my page on the main board for a bit. I came back and refreshed it and those blue diamonds were there saying that a new post had been made. However no new posts were made. And now they won't go away.

I've tried leaving the board and coming back. I have also tried shutting down Firefox and reloading it. Nothing works. Anyone else having this problem?
Title: Re: Board freaking out
Post by: KC on November 13, 2006, 12:15:14 AM
Not I ... but I suspect it may have something to do with a double time adjustment that happened today. Earlier, I noticed that the Board's time was only one hour behind mine, instead of the usual two, so I set my time offset to one hour. But now I see I'll have to set it back to two hours. So the time switched twice today for some reason.

I recall that once before when Board time changed while I and some other people were posting and viewing topics, those "new posts" blue diamonds started acting weirdly.

There must be a way to "mark topics read" because I've seen it happening in "Who's online." Darned if I know how to do it, though.
Title: Re: Board freaking out
Post by: Brendan on November 13, 2006, 12:30:40 AM
I would assume then that the clock had something to do with it. I too changed my time. I guess I'll have to change it back.

And you can mark your topics read by hitting the "Mark Topics Read" button below the Web Announcements thread.

This morning, I had been moving through the Web Board with no problems when suddenly, after a longish pause after a click, I got the error message:

Quote
     Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

After a few more minutes ... I clicked again, and everything was back. This message was new to me, anyone else see it?

The Internal Error is something my Web Host is working on. Not sure why this has been happening but they are working on a solution, albeit very slow. I will follow up with them and find out what is what.  As far as the other issues, please ask a moderator to email me with specific isssues you find. Seems things are sporadic and that they work for some but not all which makes it hard to troubleshoot. I need to make sure these are board issues and not user config issues. The new upgrade of the board was needed for security purposes. We will address any issues that come up as best as we can during this process. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I just noticed the board time was an hour behind than it was earlier today.

I adjusted it forward but when I had a look to see who was online, the clock said it was 9:00pm but there were guests on the who's online list that the time said it was 9:05pm.How can they be in the future.:o

I have a feeling this has been mentioned before, maybe last year sometime.???
Title: Re: Board freaking out
Post by: Lin Sunderland on June 27, 2007, 10:50:09 PM
I corrected the time and now my profile says I am 8 hours ahead even though I am only 7 hours right now. I just checked and there are no guest 'ahead of time' that I can see.   Must keep checking the clock if we are to start the next movie night together!

Anyone else had this problem:

My PM's are connected to my email, so if someone sends me a PM and I'm not on the board but if I check my emails they will come through there.

The problem is sometimes they don't go through to my email. Today I had three messages, but only two went through.

No major hassle but I think it's weird sometimes they don't go through ???

I don't know what happened last night, but I thought I'd brought the board crashing down. I was looking at different posts like normal when all of a sudden whenever I click on anything I got this message:

I gave up after 20 minutes and went to bed. Then I had a dream that the whole board got wiped and we finished up with a new version of the board.  :o

Everything seems to be back to normal now thankfully. 8)

Does anyone else who posts in the movie journal threads get the windows "Page cannot be displayed" whenever they hit save after updating their journals?

I noticed in the last couple of months at least 3 or 4 times out of 10, this happens. I just hit back on my browser and hit save again and everything is ok but it seems weird it only happens when I post in the movie journal thread and nowhere else on the board.

Seems as though this problem is only when I modify my movie journal in the last couple of days.

After I hit Modify in the post, when I scroll down to add my next film, that's when this "this page is in spanish" pops up.

I did click on translate this time and noticed that all the films I had with my fancy astrix's and colours did change slightly with gaps appearing. I wasn't too sure if that was going to completely destroy my original list, so I clicked back on my browser just to be safe.

Again this has only just started happening in the last couple of days.

SK, I also had this experience twice yesterday and again just now.  I only get it on Page 2.  When I click the X it disappears, but reappears if I go back to that page again.

I haven't seen that in so long, but it seems to have been replaced by this one in the past few weeks. Doesn't happen as often as the internal error message, but happens 2 or 3 times in a row whenever you click on a link here on the board.

I don't know if this is a board freak out or my PC.    I had a power failure and of course the PC went down.  When I started everything up again I couldn't get this site to open.  Just kept telling me there was an error and to try again.  I tried to open it on Firefox and Internet Explorer.  Plus I opened up Google Chrome and nothing would open it.  So I was 3 hours without my Clint fix.   :'(   I finally got it to work about 10 minutes ago.    This is not the first time the board has locked me out.  Very frustrating.  Any ideas if this is just a glitch or a problem with my side?

I know I've mentioned this in the past somewhere on the board, but it happened again 20 minutes ago. I got a PM but that little pop up box didn't appear. Usually it does, but sometimes it doesn't.

So it took me 20 minutes to reply because I only just noticed up the top of the page where it said I had 1 new message.

Quite annoying. >:(

EDIT: And just as I hit post on this, I get a pop up for a message.

Anyone else having a problem with the thread about the Posters for High Plains Drifter in the Movie Night Discussion thread?

Last night when I was bringing it back to life and again this morning after SC posted in it, when I got to the page, I was getting the windows security warning about entering a secure site. After clicking OK to continue it would just keep coming up about six times before finally disappearing. Unfortunately sometimes my screen would freeze after all that and it would say windows was not responding.

Is it just my crappy PC? Fair dinkum, ever since I renewed my Norton Subscription about 6 weeks ago my PC has gone to hell and a handbasket.  >:(

My PC keeps freezing on the CEWB and I can't even close the site down, it just starts again after an hour or so.  It is only on this site that I have the problems.   Sometimes when I cancel it and start again I can't sign on.  If I log off after each time I use the site or I leave it up I still have the same problems!   It is a real pain.

SK, I have not had any problem with the 'Posters for High Plains Drifter in the Movie Night Discussion thread'. It's just the screen freezing bit, which is a pain in the backside. Last night when I went to post the toon in the Aussie Thread, it was not responding and I had to log back out and re-do it! :(

You are not the only one SK.

I had problems yesterday and again this morning.   I just set up a post with pictures and comments for the Aussie Thread.  Hit Post and what do I get?? A white screen then "try again".  It took me so long to do that post and I can't remember exactly what I said so I am not going to try to repeat it.    This happened at least three times this morning.  At least I was only trying to post once.  It is getting frustrating to say the least.  :(

Looking at my Movie Journal on the board and with this new computer it looks like I have a red box over my star ratings. I never had that before and now when I try to modify the post, when I go to highlight anything, the reply box goes flying up so I'm highlighting everything else. I can't just highlight what I want, so I have to type it out instead of clicking the icon. >:(

I have that issue too sometimes. Like once I've gotten a fair bit into the reply box, it'll bounce around while I'm typing in it.

It looks like you have "glow" on your star ratings. The coding looks like this (without the spaces):

[ glow=red,2,300][ color=Pink]*****[/color][/glow]

For me, it looks different in Firefox and IE. In Firefox, there is a red box over the stars. In IE, each individual star is "highlighted" in red.

I'm not sure why you've been using "glow," but you have been using it since these threads started in 2005.

I don't know about the issue in highlighting. Can you explain that with "the reply box goes flying up" a bit better?

I just thought it looked good, but now with the red box showing up it's bloody awful.

When I went to highlight Star Wars Episode V: The Empire strikes Back in my movie journal earlier in the week. It was of course at the bottom of the reply box. As soon as I tried to highlight just that film like I always have in the past, the reply box would scroll up and I'd be highlighting other films not just the one I wanted.

Like once I've gotten a fair bit into the reply box, it'll bounce around while I'm typing in it.

Yep, that happens now as well, but not all the time.  :-\

I've modified my movie journal and no longer have the stars highlighted so if anyone is reading this and looking at my journal, thinking what the hell are you all talking about, that's the reason. :)
Title: Re: Board freaking out

I've got IE 9 and it seems to handle the "glow" OK. You can check the version by going to Help and "About Internet Explorer" in the menu bar at the top of the window. If you don't see the menu bar, right click on the top of the frame and put a check next to Menu bar.

There do seem to be the same problems that are frequently happening to a lot of us.   Quite often the board sticks and nothing happens for ages then suddenly all the words I have typed up in a post appear in the box.   Then when I hit post they take a few minutes to appear in the thread.  :o     I seem to read "waiting for Clint Eastwood web site" a lot at the bottom of my page. ???

Anyone else getting an "Authentication Required" popup with the message "A username and password are being requested by http://www.wearysloth.com. The site says: 'IIS - wearysloth.com'" on pages where we've used pics from Avelyman ("Wearysloth")?

If so, you can ignore it. Just press "cancel" and the popup will go away.

One thing I've noticed in the past day or so is I click on a link to a thread or page or anything and nothing happens. I look down to see the little green bar along the taskbar and it isn't there. I click again and up it pops and the page I want pops up. Very strange.

It seems that a lot of the people say that they have trouble logging in to the board? I have always had the little box ticked where it says stay logged in and just click the icon on my desktop or the icon on my favorites bar to get to the board. I always thought logging in and out would be too much of a hassle everytime.

Maybe it's something other could try and see if that's any better?

Have you tried contacting your Internet service provider? It seems to me that's what I did back when I was having problems getting on this site (and only this site). Though I'm not sure they were able to help. They did try a lot of things, though, and maybe one of those things would work for you.

As I recall, it took about two weeks, then everything was back to normal.

I know I've mentioned this before but I couldn't find it. Sometimes when I click on the "Quote" link in the top right hand corner of each post it won't come up in the quick reply box. I have to click it again.

I'm sure on more than one occassion this morning during the movie night that when I clicked "Quote" it popped up for a split second in the reply box before disappearing so I had to click the link again.

EDIT: Mmm, I just quoted SC's post in Eastwood Quotes without any problems. I wonder if it has anything to do with having the warning of new replies turned off during the movie night? ???

If you mean the Board's spell check, I don't know because I never use it. I rely on Firefox's built-in spell check. (Firefox, by the way, insists that "spellcheck" is an incorrect spelling.)

Maybe what I'm experiencing is a feature, but it is new to me (tonight) and rather annoying.  When I first open a page on the board, it fills the whole screen.  Then it suddenly gets shoved over and this bar appears on the left-hand side and says Related Searches, with a list of Eastwood movie titles or somehow related topics following.  It is distracting, undesired and reduces the area for viewing the site.

Also, there is suddenly a bunch of words that are underlined and appear in red.  They are somehow key words for something, but not particularly something I want to deal with every time I visit the site.  I've experienced such things on some news sites, but find them very distracting and bothersome.  I don't like seeing them in the middle of a post or PM

Sorry for complaining.  I really appreciate all the hard work Richard has put into this site.  O0

Since I wrote this earlier, I've come to wonder if my browser isn't the culprit.  Sorry for the complaints.  I'll go off to bed and maybe life won't be so irritating in the morning.  :)

Thanksgiving Day (Jour de l'Action de grāce in Canadian French) is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Sometimes when I'm putting together a class schedule, I'll check the calendar on this site since it's something I can go to quickly if I'm sitting at a computer at the time. I'd noticed our calendar here said that Thanksgiving was the 21, but luckily I'd noticed an email from the college mentioning the days off we have for fall semester. I'm trying to make this post by using the QUOTE button in the upper right corner of each post.

I got flipped into the QUICK-REPLY box. This has been happening for a month or two or three. Usually I type out my post and push the POST button and then nothing happens for a long time. I always give up, COPY my post, and then start pushing buttons like the panicked non-geek that I am. I never remember the exact lucky sequence that enables me to successfully make my post, when that happens to happen.

This aint the way its spozed to be.

Here we go again. Will this get posted or not? That is the question Horatio.

Problem first popped up when I was using Windows XP/AOL/Seamonkey on a recently deceased laptop. RIP . The good they die young. We hardly knew ye.
