Title: How to post an image on the Web Board
Post by: Matt on April 17, 2004, 12:16:37 AM
Now and then someone wants to know how to post a picture here on the board, so I figured I'd start a topic on it. It's pretty easy, and gets easier after you do it a few times.

First, the image you want to post must already be uploaded on the internet. If you found the picture on a website somewhere, then you should be able to post it here. There are some exceptions though... many free sites like Geocities and Tripod don't allow 'direct linking' of their images, which basically means... we won't see it. If you find the image you want to post on one of those sites...  and you can't find it on any other site... you'll have to upload it onto your own site or ask a moderator if they can host it for you before you can post it here.

Once you find the picture that you want to post, right click on it and a pop-up box will appear. Look at the bottom for a line that says 'Properties", click on that and a pop-up box will come up that will have a line that says Address (URL) and that will give you the entire web address that you need to post it here. (Here's the URL for the picture I will be posting:  http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/large70/magnum.jpg) Highlight the entire address (using your left mouse button) then right click on the highlighted address and another pop-up box will appear. Choose "copy".

Now, you need to go to your post to insert the picture where you want it. Simply go to that point in your post, click, then go to the two rows of YABBC tags above the window where you type your post. On the bottom row, fourth over is a picture of a picture frame: (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/Themes/yabbse/images/bbc/img.gif)  Click on that and these tags will appear in your post (I have a space after the first bracket of each tag so that they'll show up here in this post)  [ img][ /img]  Click on the space between the first tag and the second, and then right click, and choose "paste".  Here's what I'll have now in my post:  [ img]http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/large70/magnum.jpg[ /img]. (Once again, I've inserted a space after each bracket so that the codes show up here).

You can then use the 'preview' button to look at your post before you send it to the board to make sure it worked.  Here's the picture now... exactly the same codes as above, except I've removed the space after each bracket so that the codes will work:

An alternate way of doing this, although it has the same outcome, is to just paste the URL for the picture in your post, then highlight it, and click on the same YABBC tag (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/Themes/yabbse/images/bbc/img.gif)   The tags will surround the URL.  (If you use the Netscape browser, you won't be able to do it this way, it doesn't work. Just do it the first way.)

Speaking of Netscape, if you're using the Netscape browser, things are a little easier when it comes to getting the URL for the picture and posting it here. In Netscape, right click on the picture you want to post, and then select "Copy Image Location".  This saves the URL and is ready to paste with just a right click of your mouse wherever you want it.

If you've never posted a picture on the board before, I hope this helps you out. Good luck.  :)

Hello Matt

I have been following your wise instructions on how to paste images onto the notice boards.......however i am having no joy.

The site i pillfered my image from was "IMDB".COM and i have a basic grasp of html but all i got was the square with the red x in the top left hand corner......is it my poor choice of website or am i just being a dummy.... ::)

Cheers

Unfortunately, IMDb is one of the sites that doesn't allow direct linking of their images. Why don't you try posting a picture from a different site. Once you get that down, you can learn how to save pictures from sites that don't allow direct linking to your hard drive, and then uploading them to a hosting site, and then posting the image. Let's take it one step at a time though, and see if you can post a picture already uploaded on the web from a different site. :)

You got it.

Now, if you want to post an image from a site that doesn't allow direct linking of their images, you can save the image to your hard drive, and then upload it to ImageShack (or your own webspace if you have it) and then post it. See THIS (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=180;start=0) thread for more details about posting images through ImageShack.

I have managed to post my first pic on my own to the board, but I would like to know how to reduce the size.  It is a bit on the large side.   The other two pics posted were hosted for me by mgk.

No probs if you have software such as Fireworks (Macromedia) or Photoshop (Abode) you can simply crop or modify the image size without losing much quality if you do not have these Lin then you can simply email me the pic you want changing with the size you require and i would gladly have a go for you  :)

Hey Lin if you wish to alter images yourself (lets face it, it so much more rewarding) then try going to a macromedia site and downloading the Mx Studio free trial , but be warned this is one BIG package and may take some time to download, i personnally prefer Fireworks to Photoshop, mainly because i am more familiar with it.

Hope this helps

A great size for the board is about 400-500 pixels wide. They can be up to 600 or 650 and still fit and not look too out of place, but I usually size my images and screencaps at about 450-500.

Now that I've mastered the art of posting a picture in my posts,
(http://www.ezydvd.com.au/g/i/p/561.jpg)

how do I go about posting more than one picture in a post.Everytime I try,I get the first picture on then go to the site to get the other picture but when I come back to post it in the message box everything I had written and the picture are now gone. :'(
Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board

tgy, you need to work with two browser windows. Go to the "File" menu and select "New Window." You can also use a keyboard shortcut: Press the "Ctrl" and "n" keys at the same time.

Now you'll have two different, independent windows. Have one of them set to the Web Board, and open your message box and start to write there. In the other one, locate the site that has your image or images. Now you can switch back and forth: Copy the image location in one window, and paste it into the message box in the other window.

I hope that helps.

I have that picture as a poster put out by an insurance company in the UK.  There is a different caption on the bottom it.  I can't remember exactly what it says, something about you are confident with so and so's insurance!    It is a great shot.  Thanks for reminding me about it tgy. O0

Great photo, thanks  O0  I have a bunch of old Everlast t-shirts that I use for working out and just bumming around my apartment.

I'll be at the gym in my old school simple Everlast shirt and a pair of beater shorts...working out right next to some knucklehead weekend warrior athlete that is decked out in 200 dollar Calvin Klein workout garb.  He is usually the same guy that walks around with ILS (imaginary lat syndrome), does 1000 curls in the squat rack with hideous form, and doesn't rerack his weights.

Anyway...its cool to see Clint wearing that shirt  8)

I've noticed lately that on some pics that have been posted you can put your mouse cursor on them which changes from an arrow to a hand and you click on that and you get another window open with a better pic.How do you go about doing that?
Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board
Post by: KC on February 03, 2006, 07:39:21 AM
Like this:

I've inserted a space after the two opening square brackets ("[") so you can see what the code looks like. And there is no line break.
[ url=http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/large2000/photo1.jpg][ img]http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/small2000/photo1.jpg[/img][/url]

If you remove those two spaces, you get this:
(http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/small2000/photo1.jpg) (http://www.clinteastwood.net/pix/gallery/large2000/photo1.jpg)

Click on the small picture, and you'll get this one in a new window:

Just be careful what you link to. We've had to ask people to remove links in a couple of cases because the linked-to pictures were a little ... risqué. And this is a family friendly board.  ;)

Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board
Post by: -satu- on September 23, 2007, 09:45:37 AM
No. I just thought if there's some kind of limit to keep the board running. Some forums have a limit so that the pictures don't slow the functioning of the forum.
Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board
Post by: KC on September 23, 2007, 11:54:10 AM
There may be a limit (and I have run into it on another board) but I don't know what it is ... Some of the posts in the photo thread have quite a few images, though they're small.

Fewer and fewer people have slow internet connections, so there's probably not too much worry about posting a lot of images even if they're pretty large. Images that are really screen-filling should probably be represented by thumbnails, though, just to keep the page readable.

KC posted this in the Cats & Dogs thread and I'd never tried it myself, so following KC's step by step instructions.

Quote
1) When you hit the "Reply" button in a thread, you get a window where you type your answer. Look down below and to the left of that window and you should see "Additional Options ..." with a "+" to the left of it.

2) Click on the +, and you'll get a list of options. One is "Attach:" and there's a box with a "Browse ..." button to the right of it.

3) Click the "Browse ..." button. You should get a window with "File upload" in the title bar above a list of files on your computer's hard drive. Navigate to the pic, and click on it. It should be a .jpg file and not bigger than 75 KB. Then click "Open" at the bottom of the "File upload" window.

4) In the box after "Attach:" there should now be the "path" to the pic on your computer's hard drive. Now, click "Post."

Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board

I was wondering that myself. I never noticed it myself till a couple of months ago (and I didn't try it out then). Of course, it's kind of hidden in that "Additional Options ..." list, and I usually use "Quick Reply," so the chances of noticing it weren't great.

Anyway, now that we know it's there, it's nice to have an alternative to ImageShack, etc.

If you have more than one pic to post. After step 4, but before you hit post, just click on more attachments and another box will appear and you just go through the steps again, then hit post.

Umm, I think that's a feature only for the moderators.  My only options are "Notify me of replies", "Return to this topic", and "Don't use smileys."  So for the rest of us peons we have to use ImageShack.
Title: Re: How to post an image on the Web Board

Aw, shucks. I don't see why it should be only for mods though; on another board where I post a lot it's available to anyone.

Maybe we'll have to ask Cal if it can be changed.

This is your image regular sized--now it's a little too big.  So how did you do the search for your image?  I've never understood what "gstatic" means, but I notice the pictures are always small.

Twomules, I assume you're getting the pictures from Google? (Sometimes "gstatic" shows up in its URLs instead of Google.)

If so, you need to click on the thumbnail (or the link where it says "See full size image") to display the image full size. Copy that URL, rather than the URL of the thumbnail. Or you can do this:

Take the URL of your picture from the thumbnail and copy the part that follows the second "http://". The whole URL looks like this (I've put spaces in after the slashes so it won't actually become a link):

http:// t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:dU0cYeILUrTYkM:http:// bradleysanimalplace.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/funny-wallpapers-rabbit-at-work.jpg

So take this part:

http:// bradleysanimalplace.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/funny-wallpapers-rabbit-at-work.jpg

... and put it between [ img] [ /img] tags, without the spaces.

Here's a smaller version of the same picture.

A-ha!  I get it now about "gstatic."  That's handy.  And since you resized the image, I deleted my link to it so it wouldn't stretch the page.

Good luck.  :)

Hi, lilirishgrl, if you point me to the page that contains the image you want to post, I'll try to help.

Well, I don't see that one over there right away, but  let's try it with this cute little fellow.

Matt's post that you quoted there is pretty clear, but I'll try to go over the steps again.

What you want is the complete URL of the image. How you get that depends on the browser you're using.

If you're using Internet Explorer, right click on the picture. A white box with a list (a "context menu") will pop up. Way down at the bottom of the list is "Properties." Click on that (left click), and a box will pop up with the image properties. One of them will be Address (URL). Highlight the whole thing with the mouse, and press Ctrl and C on your keyboard (at the same time) to copy it.

If you're using Firefox, it's easier ... just right click on the image and select "Copy image location."

In either case, come back over here and paste the image URL into your message. Then put [ img] right before the URL, and [ /img] right after it, but without the space after the bracket. Here's what that looks like, with the spaces added so you can see the code:

[ img]http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyufwtXA5s1qzya49o1_500.jpg[ /img]

If I would now take away those spaces, you would see the picture above.

Sometimes people post images here that are "too big." They make the page widen out past the width of your screen, so you have to scroll horizontally to see everything. That makes it very hard to read other posts on that page. Until now, what we've done about this has been rather complicated. Either the original poster or one of the mods had to find a smaller version of the image, or else download it, reduce it with image editing software, and post it to an image sharing site. Then the post would have to be edited to replace the "too big" picture's URL with the smaller one's.

But there is another solution. The last time this happened, our long-time member Dan Dassow made the suggestion in the thread to just edit the code with the image URL to set the width to a reasonable size. Since that image has now been "fixed," we've removed his post, but I thought I'd quote it here so everyone can see how it's done.

Quote
You can limit the width by adding the width qualifier as shown below, except remove the leading blank.

[ img width=300]http://www.syracusenewtimes.com/calendar/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/the-outlaw-josey-wales-original.jpg[/img]

See http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Img for details.

The 300 was Dan's suggestion for this particular image, but it can be any figure up to about 600 or 800. It will depend on the size of your monitor whether it's too big to display correctly. I have a 21-inch monitor and it's set to a resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 pixels, so even a pretty large image is still OK for me, but that may not be true for everyone. When in doubt, err on the smaller side, and post a link (a regular URL link) to the full-size image if you like.

This is the image mentioned in Dan's post, constrained to a width of 300 pixels by the code he posted:

If you want to see the original "too big" image (1,920px × 1,080px), follow this link:

http://www.syracusenewtimes.com/calendar/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/the-outlaw-josey-wales-original.jpg

Thanks again for the tip, Dan Dassow!

^ Since posting the above, I noticed that the reduced image automatically becomes a link to the full-sized image. If you click it once, you'll see the full-sized image. Click it again, and it goes back to reduced. So it's not really necessary to post the URL of the full-sized image, and the reduced image can be quite small. It might not hurt to add a reminder that people can see the full-sized image by clicking the "thumbnail."

I read my own instructions to learn how to do this again. My god, I mention using the Netscape browser.

If self-hosting a screencap, or something like that, you can use Imgur -- they keep the images online forever (or so they say).

Here's some instructions with screencaps that will help newbies upload their own images to the internet and post here on the board:

Go to www.imgur.com (http://www.imgur.com)

If you need to resize your image before posting, follow these two steps

After resizing (or if resizing is not needed), the final step:

You don't even need to use the Image tags on the board -- the code you're copying when you select "BBCode (Forums)" includes everything.

I used imgur for the first time today and thank you Matt for the tips. So much easier and faster than any other hosting site I've ever used.   O0

Yeah, I like imgur. It's a pity so many images posted on this Board were hosted on ImageShack, meaning most of them aren't showing any more.

Thank you, Matt, for the instructions for uploading images to imgur.  I finally had time to replace my avatar today after noticing a while back that it had gone missing.  It's my favorite moment from GBU.
