Just to offer a connection between your favorite and my favorite, Daniels co-wrote the Elvis song It Hurts Me. The lyrics are below:

Quote
It Hurts Me
(words & music by Byers - Daniels)
It hurts me to see him treat you the way that he does
It hurts me to see you sit and cry
When I know I could be so true
If I had someone like you
It hurts me to see those tears in your eyes

The whole town is talking, they're callin' you a fool
For listening to his same old lies
And when I know I could be so true
If I had someone like you
It hurts me to see the way he makes you cry

If you love him too much, you're too blind to see
He's only playing a game
But he never loved you
He never will
And darling, don't you know he will never change

Oh, I know he never will set you free
Because he's just that kind of guy
But if you ever tell him you're through
I'll be waiting for you
Waiting to hold you so tight
Waiting to kiss you goodnight
Yes, darling, if I had someone like you

That's GREAT Adam, thanks.  I hate to sound like "The Fonz", but 'I knew that, I knew that'!  That's one of my favorite Elvis 60's songs.  I once gave it to a girl I was, ahem, "dating" because she was fooling around on her boyfriend with yours truly and I was trying to convince her to leave him.  Man, am I glad she didn't!  A lesson well learned on my part and a situation I'll never let myself get into again.

Ok....a little "Too Much"* revealed here (*Elvis song-couldn't resist!)

I won't laugh. After 'Some Mother's Do 'ave 'em' I was absolutely stunned to see Michael Crawford in the Phantom of the Opera.  An excellent singer.

An Australian Ballad singer that most would not of heard of is a fellow by the name of Lionel Long. Very talented but Aussie songs (C/W) ballads only.

I'm so happy to see others enjoy MC's work as well.  I saw him as the Phantom 2 times and he was excellent.  I also saw him do an Andrew Lloyd Weber concert and he sang all the best songs from ALW.  Crawford was sensational.  After that concert I bought a few of his CD's and have been a fan ever since.   :D

Favorite rock singer: Perry from Journey
Favorite "workout music" singer: Scott from AC/DC
Favorite singer for when the date comes over: Phil Collins (w/ or without Genesis)
Favorite old school rap singer: Sir Mixalot
Favorite cheesy 80s singer: Lead from Wall of Voodoo
Favorite comedic singer: Denis Leary - but only for the "The A$$hole Song".

  Sting deserves honorable mention somewhere.

Remember "Big Audio Dynamite"?  I'm listening to "Globe" right now; pretty good jam for the 80s actually.

Here is a song from the 80's that will never die.  I'm sure you remember the band Devo and their world-wide famous song, Whip It!  Sorry, I can't resist sharing the entire song with you.  ;D  Enjoy.

Whip It

"Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's going wrong
You must whip it

  now whip it
  into shape
  shape it up
  get straight
  go forward
  move ahead
  try to detect it
  it's not too late
  to whip it
  whip it good

When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets their way
Until they whip it

I say whip it
Whip it good"
That's probably one song I could go the rest of my life without hearing again, and I'd be okay with it. ;)

But I do enjoy Dr. Evil's "Zip It" version of the song from, I think, The Spy Who Shagged Me. ;D

I've merged the topics. Slacker, in the future, why not do a search before posting a new topic to make sure there isn't already a thread open on the same thing?  :)

Tom Waits.

No, not a joke. He may seem like an odd choice, as his gruff and smokey voice certainly isn't the kind you'd have praised at Julliard, but it has such an amazing flavor and singularity. And of course it is absolutely perfect for the music Tom writes. I listen to his stuff incessantly.

Yes Yes.  I play Chicago and The Moody Blues so much.  Chicago instrumental backings are brilliant.  ::) ::) ::)

Better shut up or I will really get us off the Favourite Male Singer thread. >:D

Lin:  I think you and I are about the same age....at least as earlier described in a different thread.  Chicago took me through the 80's like no other band and Peter's voice was the best.  I listen to them all the time when I run and work out or just need to do some time traveling. I think I would like to see that devil........ ^-^
The Moody Blues had a terrific special on yesterday...both the far past and present for the band. They are still very strong. :)

I've been listening to a lot of Tom Waits recently. Amazing talent....

But, this week in the Gant household in heavy rotation is Anthony Newley.

Newley was Englands one man rat pack. Hollywood, Vegas, Broadway, Chart toppers, Oscar nominations. Tony did it all.  He was also a magnificent song writer.

The most overlooked giant in recent entertainment history.

Peter's voice was the best.
I never liked his voice that much. But, the band had some good songs in the early days... "25 or 6 to 4" is my favorite Chicago song. I love the horns in their earlier stuff. I really disliked what the band turned into though. Some of their later ballads were just so........  soulless. In my opinion, of course. (http://home.swfla.rr.com/mattreigns/boardsmile.gif)

I posted this in 2005 and apart from Damh The Bard, who I had not heard then, and forgetting to include Willie Nelson I guess my list is still the same.

Funny how you realize things about certain people once they're gone. Too late that is. For one, you realize that you'll miss them.

I never really had a favorite male singer. Bands? Sure. I never even asked myself if I had a favorite male singer. I never realized I had one until Michael Jakson passed away last week. HE was my favorite male singer. It just hit me. Let's just say that I was unfaithful to him and to his music for a very long period of time. Too long as it happens. I 'woke up' too late.

Maybe I was too young -after all he reached the peak of his career around the time I was born. Besides I wasn't born in an English-speaking country, so I wasn't exactly 'equipped' to understand what he was saying and why in the first place. I didn't have the tools required to be able to relate to his music.
Maybe I was too immature for his songs.
Maybe I was too influenced by the media at the time to be able to appreciate the man and his music objectively without being brainwashed with all the rumors and controversies surrounding his life and career.

It makes me sound pretty foolish, saying this right now, after he passed away...
It's like "Oh yeah right, you're like millions of other people right now, everybody's an MJ fan"
"How couldn't you possibly know during all this time?"

My answer is I don't know. And it's not like that at all.

The only album I own is HIStory. I bought it when it came out. I missed all the live stuff of course, something that I've been regretting very deeply these past few days.

One thing I remember though is that I bought a postcard around the time Dangerous was released. It was the album cover. I was young. I kept it for a very long time in my diary. I wasn't ready for him just yet. He was just that weird singer guy with a scary face, dancing while suspiciously touching his crotch and letting out little screams. I was blinded by the media and ended up missing all of his oeuvre -with the exception of Thriller and Billie Jean maybe, which, by the way, are not my favorite songs to this date.

Now I am ready for him. I understand. I can feel, hear and see the amazing performer that he was, still is and will always be without paying too much attention to the rest.
Better late than never. But still...  :'(

I like Chris Cornell and Robbie Williams.

Agree and understand what you said about Michael, AB. I like his songs but, to me, his strong point was the dancing.

Ab, your feelings are about the same as mine. Although I don't think he is my favourite singer, but I was touched by his death and I've been listening his music, watching videos from youtube and feeling sad about his death. I've had a few friends who were (are) MJ fans. I never had strong feelings about his music, always thought it was good, but never really listened to his music on my own. Well, I was really young, I hardly listened anything except Backstreet Boys which was huge at that age along The Spice Girls. It's only now (almost 22) that I'm starting to find the music that touches me. Maybe it's because he died. I was sad about Ledger's death too, though he never really played a role in my life. I don't understand what took me so long too to realise this, but I'm loving his music.

I hope he will be remembered for his music, not for the precarious stuff.. At least I will. That's how I remember Elvis too. Well, "remember" is probably the wrong word because of my young age but anyway.. You all know what I mean.  ;)
