Everybody Loves Raymond
Two and a Half Men
Since it's on immediatly after Raymond, I've watched a few episodes of Two And A Half Men, but not enough to form an opinion. It seems pretty funny though.

That's how I started watching it as well. I really don't watch many current shows. There used to be more, but I've just stopped watching them.

I don't watch much TV.  I find the infommercials to be more creative than the average recycled comedy and drama dreck.  I do like The Simpsons though.  Haven't watched an current episodes in a few years though.  Are they still good?

Everybody Loves Raymond
Two and a Half Men

I agree with you Christopher.  These two shows are great.  I also enjoy all the Law & Orders and CSI's.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is my favorite current TV show. I can't really think of anything that comes even close to that. I think I love Larry David. :-* ;)

Too many, but I'll list them:

"24" (It lost it's steam in season three, season four is rumoured to be it's last... hopefully.)
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"
"CSI: Miami"
"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (Best comedy currently on TV.)
"Dead Like Me"
"Joan of Arcadia"
"Nip/Tuck" (Julian McMahon is a tremendous actor and is rumoured to be playing James Bond.)
"Rescue Me" (Great show, worth a viewing and if you don't love it... you got something wrong with yah...)
"Stargate SG-1" (Best sci-fi show currently on TV.)
"Stargate: Atlantis"

Also "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" is a show that everyone should be watching. It's writing is brilliant and it's correspondents are just truly smart people and they know how to make you laugh. Great show.

I agree with you.  The Daily Show is great.  Jon Stewart interviewed Former President Bill Clinton the other night and it was a great interview.  A little bit of politics with a little bit of comedy.

Everybody loves Raymond
Two and half men
Thats all we get thats new the rest is all repeats and repeats, our channel nine had the nerve to put again the very first show of Frasier instead of showing us the last 3 seasons which we probably wont get till 2014 the way its going, they've restarted them at least 11 times , really.
So the only way to find out what happened, after the shows air in the US, they are displayed on epguides.com I went there and found out , same with Friends, who knows when we'll see the end here but I read about it on epguides.

It hasn't aired yet, it's supposed to be on NBC this fall. However if what I've been reading on the net is true.... it's a big pile of crap. So bad so, that NBC is deciding to hold it off until mid-season and then air it on Bravo. I really want it too suck hard and I hope it is recieved badly because then, finally, the studios and networks might realize it's not good to ruin a great thing.

Hmmm... I haven't been watching too much "real" tv lately.  I'm too tired from all the reality shows that I was watching.

I do like the CSI, and CSI:Miami,  Law & order (the original), Smallville, Nip/Tuck, Dead Like Me, The Chapelle Show.

I'm also watching forensic files, I Detective and The system.

I used to like "Smallville" but it seemed after season two it became to over stylized and flashy. Now they have the Kal-El/Jor-El thing going on, which is interesting, but the way their handling it is to unbeleavable. Nice to see another "Nip/Tuck" fan though.  8)

Yes, "Law & Order" is still on the air. But no, Orbach is no longer on the show. He just left at the end of this past season in May. But Jerry and his wise-cracking Lenny Briscoe will be a sometimes character on yet another "Law & Order" spin-off that  starts this Fall.

His replacement on "Law & Order" is Dennis Farina, the real-life Chicago cop turned character actor who's best work includes Get Shorty, Midnight Run, Snatch, Men of Respect and "Crime Story".

It just won't be the same without Mr.Orbach. I don't think I'm still going to watch new episodes of Law & Order like I used to, might just stick to the re-runs.

I completely understand.  I am a huge fan of L&O and are sad to see Lenny go.  But we have lost quite a few good ones on this show, including Chris Noth.  I'm sure I will still watch.  Not quite sure how I feel about Dennis Farina playing the new detective.  He doesn't give me any warm fuzzies.  He will have to be really good to impress me.

I'm exactly the opposite. I still watch "L&O", but mostly out of habit, and it's only the reruns on TNT that really interest me. However, I LOVE Dennis Farina. Love him. I haven't anticipated one single season of "L&O" since Cary Lowell left. I'm actually excited to see it again this Fall. That's solely because of Farina.

CSI:Miami is another one of my favorites.  CSI:NY looks great too and that starts up in the fall.

I'm iffy on "CSI: New York". I might check out the pilot and maybe the second episode but I just don't like the fact it's not shot on location in New York City. And another CSI? Come on. "CSI: Miami" came on the air too early; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was only in it's third season when Miami came on. Now it's going into it's fifth and Miami is going into it's third and they're already putting another one on the air? CBS is over-saturating the market with them.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was a new, fresh, hip, cutting edge show when it premiered and now it's just getting down being the same old, same old. Even William Peterson, Gil Grissom on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", has said he wasn't to keen on the idea of "CSI: Miami" premiering when it did. He wasn't against it, he just felt it came too early. He also feels the same way about "CSI: New York".

The back door pilot for New York (The second to last episode of CSI: Miami's second season, when Haratio Cane went to NY on the trail of a killer) didn't help in my pre-judegements eithers. In fact, it made me think that New York could possibly be a bad show. It just looked weak and didn't have the same feeling as Miami's back door pilot on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation".

Oh well enough of me rambling. ;D

Farina should bring something new and vital to the series.

Borat's Television Programme.

Anyone manage to catch this?

One of the funniest things in ages, from the person who plays Ali-G comes Borat, the Kazahkstan television presenter, who is doing a documantry on USA. (His follow up to the one he made in the UK.) The great thing about this is that the people he interviews do not relize it is a spoof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This offensive laugh a minute comedy is very near the mark.   The most offensive part so far is his some 'In my country there is problem' which talks about some of the problems in Kazahkstan.

To get the link, PM me, because It may not be suitable on the board.

I'm looking foward to 'Da New Ali-G show' which is going to be great.

Oops...  I remember there was a fuss over Michael Moriarty leaving, and then I really liked Sam Waterston as his replacement.  I don't think I saw many eps with Moriarty, so I probably only started watching in the 3rd season.  my boo boo :-[.

I really like Sam Waterson too.  I think he was a great replacement for Michael leaving.  I really enjoyed Michael as the ADA but Waterson is so good in this role.

FYI:  George Dzundza was the original partner for Chris Noth.  Sorvino came on after Dzundza's character was killed.  Then Sovino's character got shot at the end of the second season and that's when Orbach came on.  I am sad he left.  I am going to miss his comical jokes.

Blonde,

I know what you mean re Goran.  I have my own copy of FMJ and I have watched it many times.  Goran when he is in the 'heads' and sitting down loading his magazine with the deranged look on his face is expertly done.  Occasionally, in L & O (CI) you can see the facial expressions reflecting the disturbed nature of the Marine recruit !

Both great and powerful shows in their own right !

My wife and I try to keep up with the following:  Cold Case, all 3 Law & Order shows, Crossing Jordan, both CSI shows (I'm sure we'll be adding CSI:NY to our list), NYPD Blue, ER, Third Watch & 24.  Others we like are the Bill Curtis shows on A&E, Investigative Reports and Cold Case Files.  Comedy's great, too, and we love That 70s Show and Whose Line Is It Anyway.  Lately we've been watching Everybody Loves Raymond and Two And A Half Men.

Without a Trace - is a show that I enjoy.  And the fact that Jack Malone is an Australian has nothing to do with it.

NCIS - not bad also.  I enjoy watching the Young Lady with the Dog Collar in the lab !!  Her name escapes me at this instant but she is good fun.

Did you see the season finale of Without a Trace?  I missed it.  Did Jack Malone end up leaving for Chicago with his wife or did he end up staying?  I really enjoy this show and I have been watching the reruns to see if he left but they haven't aired the season finale again.   :D

But at least "The Daily Show" took home "Best Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program" and "Best Variety, Music or Comedy Series", which it rightfully deserved.

I thought that "The Chappelle Show" should have won. While "The Daily Show" is pretty good it seems that he's gone a main stream a lot and the humor it's the same.  What I was really suprised about was the "Everyone Loves Raymond and the  "Friends" shut-out and "Frasier" winnning best actor and best supporting actor.
Title: Re: Favorite Current TV Shows
Post by: Christopher on September 20, 2004, 09:27:03 AM
I've heard a lot of good things about The Chappelle Show, but have only seen a little bit of it. It was funny from what I saw. I've only seen a little bit of The Daily Show as well, so I don't know exactly how I'd feel about it, other than the fact it felt more like they were really trying to be funny. Naturally, being a huge Letterman fan I always agreed during those several years that his show won that award straight, but I think I would have rather seen Chappelle win, if I were going to choose another besides The Late Show.

It didn't surprise me to see Frasier win some, with it having been the final season. I know it was Friends last year as well, but I've never actually seen an episode of Friends in my entire life, but I'll take a guess that I'd like Frasier a lot more, and it probably is the better show (okay, that's not a fair statement, but I've seen clips of Friends, and it really never looked all that great).

I love Everybody Loves Raymond, but I didn't expect it to win. Maybe next year, with it being the last season. ::)

The shows I watch regularly or semi-regularly are: The Apprentice, The Daily Show, Letterman, O'Reilly Factor, Countdown with Keith Oberman, Dennis Miller, Becker (re-runs), M*A*S*H (re-runs), Rawhide (re-runs) and occassionally American Idol - yes shame I know.

Has to be "Shameless" first and foremost, a funnier program i have not seen in a long long time, proper northen humour and above all it is set in Manchester

Then "The Soprano's"

"The West Wing"

"Six Feet Under"

"Point Pleasant" is starting to get interesting too.

As for 24 and CSI the originals were great so why spoil the formulae

Really? Your diggin 24? Granted it's nowhere near as terrible as season three but it's light years away from the greatness that was seasons one and two. There are just too many issues going on with this season. The fact that no one at CTU appears to actually want to help stop whats going on (they'ed all rather just backstab each other), the schizo-daughter sub-plot was pointless, the Conservative vs. Liberal undertones. I really hope they cancel the show at the end of this season. But knowing FOX they'll keep it on the air until it's way beyond dead... sort of like The Simpsons.

And yeah, Devane was a nice little touch to this season. I've been seeing a lot of him recently. He also plays the President on Stargate SG-1.

Yea 24 is pretty intense right now, I think that the more issues the more interesting the plot. What is a world without too many problems? That is what CTU agents are for  ;)

One thing I would like to know is why on shows like the three Law and Orders and NYPD Blue and Cold Case it's the detectives that solve the crimes. But on the C.S.I. shows it's the Crime Scene Investigator's.In all the years of watching NYPD Blue I've never seen a C.S.I. helping Andy Sipowitz in the interrogation room with a suspect.

Yes, of course, this will always be the conceit of medical examiner shows. It started with "Quincy, M.E." in the 1970s (starring Jack Klugman) and has now continued with "Crossing Jordan" and the three "C.S.I." shows, as well as novels such as Patricia Cornwell's bestselling Kay Scarpetta mysteries.

And yes, it is preposterous. But how many television shows do you think portray a heck of a lot of truth?

Do T.V. shows in the rest of the world start at the advertised time?Because here in Australia it's getting ridiculous. For the last 4 weeks Law and Order has been advertised to begin at 8:30p.m. on a Monday night. The actual time it started was 8:40p.m.Then this week it's advertised to start at the "special time" of 9:00p.m.and guess what,I turn the T.V. on at 8:55p.m.and the show has already begun,I've missed the first 2 or 3 minutes. This is very annoying and I'm going to send the channel an email venting my anger  >:(( bet they don't reply ).

The best cop show on t.v at the moment.

Summer:

"Nip/Tuck"
"Rescue Me"
"Stargate SG-1" (takes a hiatus at the end of the summer)
"Stargate Atlantis" (takes a hiatus at the end of the summer)

Fall:

"Arrested Development" (the BEST comedy show on TV)
"CSI" (original one)

Winter/Spring:

"Stargate SG-1" (finishes off season)
"Stargate Atlantis" (same as above)

And then there's the occasional "Daily Show", "Mythbusters", "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "Anderson Cooper 360" viewings.

The best of the series right now:

24
CSI (I prefer Vegas, but Miami is now on, so..)
The X-Files (re-runs from season 1)
West Wing
Dalziel And Pascoe

I´ve also been watching Cold Case, which was on tonight. Interestingly enough, right after it the news told about an indictment in a murder case that took place in the summer of 1960 on Lake Bodom here in Finland. Four teenagers were camping on Lake Bodom when they were attacked in the middle of the night and three were killed with a knife, leaving one survivor... In the original investigation no leads were found and the case remained unsolved. About a year ago the case was opened again and the survivor was questioned by the police. Now, after some DNA tests the survivor, 63 years old now, was indicted of the murders. A real life Cold Case...  :o

Law and Order:Trial By Jury has just started being shown down here and after seeing the first 2 episodes I'm sorry to hear it only lasted 1 season.I really like it.The way they show the behind the scenes of what they do to get someone ready for a trial, the dirty tricks the lawyers come up with to manipulate the truth, and it's the last show Jerry Orbach starred in before passing away earlier this year. What an great actor.

I have the entire series of West Wing on DVD, Martin Sheen is excellent as President Bartlett. Actually, if you can get hold of this on DVD and I'm not sure you can, try to track down a mini series made in 1983 about President Kennedy, called Kennedy, starring Sheen as the President. I might not care too much for Sheen's liberal politics, no surprises Bartlett is a Democrat, but as an actor West Wing is his finest role.
As I live in England, you probably won't have heard of this show, but Bad Girls, set in a women's prison, is our best drama at the mo. BTW the new series of Doctor Who will be worth watching when it's exported to America.

I waiting for someone to mention this show. I'm liking it as well. I didn't see the premiere (Morgan and his wife go live on minimum wage for a month) but I did see the one where the guy trys to reverse the aging process by taking a bunch of drugs and working out. I liked how b*[email protected] his wife got and I loved when that trainer girl talked back to her  ;D.

Last weeks episode where that Christian guy lived with that Muslim family and followed their religion was pretty damn good. I loved the scene where the two guys got into a heated arguement about denouncing terrorism and whatnot and then it was time to pray and after they were all cool and getting along. That was great to see.

You can find more about the show here, at it's official website. (http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/30days/main.html)

That statue is a reference to a "Bull Market", being a prolonged rise in the prices of stocks (the opposite downturn cycle is called the "Bear Market").

From NewYorkMetro.com...

Quote
• Stock Market Bull Statue: Sometimes called “Charging Bull” or “Wall Street Bull,” this 7,000 pound bronze statue was made by New York City artist Arturo Di Modica in 1989 and illegally placed in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Di Modica decided to create the bull after Black Monday, October 19, 1987, the day of the largest 24-hour decline in recorded stock market history (the Dow Jones went down 22.6%). The police were called in to haul the bull away but public outcry was such that the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation made room for it in nearby Bowling Green Park, where it remains today.

"Extras" doesn't premiere Stateside until the middle of September. HBO is running it, right after episodes of the fifth season of Larry David's brilliant "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Can't hardly wait. My sides are already hurting in anticipatory laughter.

For anyone in R1, the fourth season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm", featuring the plot arcs of Larry becoming involved in the Broadway production of Mel Brooks' The Producers and trying to consumate the 10th wedding anniversary present given to him by his wife, it streets on DVD in less than two weeks (August 20th, 2005).

I agree. Cold Case is great.

I love the music too. Great songs. Always manage to find THE song to match a particular situation/atmosphere -I know that's what they're supposed to do alright, but I think that in this case it works pretty well. Most of the time these things go unnoticed -when there's a lot of action for instance, but not in Cold Case.
Music plays a big role.

Not the usual "cop show". First of, she's a woman. No Macho Men with Big Guns here. Did you notice how near the end of each episode, she always ends up crying a little?

YOU ALL SHOULD BE WATCHING ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!

This show is just absolutley brilliant. The writing is THE BEST on TV and the casting is just extraordinary. It's refreshing to see such an original comedy show on television that's actually GOOD! Unlike all the formulaic tripe such as Friends, Will & Grace (the WORST SHOW ever!), According to Jim and others.

I've watched the first and second seasons three times now and the jokes are still as funny as they were when I saw them the first time and I've picked up on jokes that I missed the first time around. I've also picked up on so many foreshadows that I missed or didn't bother to pick up on before.

The first and second seasons are available on DVD right now so PLEASe, PLEASE go out and rent them... or even better BUY THEM! I guarantee that you will not be disapointed with the show at all. I've shown the show to a few people and they all had nothing but positive things to say about it. I lent my seasons out to a co-worker and she came in the next day and couldn't stop talking about it. I then found out that more people at work watch the show and love it.

See this show folks! See it now!

See this show folks! See it now!

I have watched "Arrested Development" religiously since it premiered. Now that I have the first two seasons on DVD, I have probably seen each and every single episode at least five times. At least.

But have you not heard that "Arrested Development" was cancelled last month? There will only be thirteen total episodes for this abbreviated third and final season, five of which have already aired. FOX is in no rush to air the remaining eight, as they no longer have any stake at all in how well it does or doesn't do.

There was talk a few weeks ago that creator Mitchell Hurwitz was given permission to shop the property around and that the cable network Showtime had expressed interest...but nothing since then. The show is dead. Gah-damn shame.

Enjoy these last eight episodes. It's the final countdown.

Yes, another great show cancelled WELL before its time, while hours and hours of just plain unwatchable sh!t clog the airwaves. Thanks a lot, America.

I heard the unfortunate news, yes. That was a sad day. eEspecially at work when I broke the news to my co-workers. Not a fun day for some. I heard the Showtime rumour but like you said... "nothing since then." I would gladly take 10 or 12 episodes seasons if that means this wonderful show could continue. Shows like this only come along every so often.

Anyone noticed a trend in a lot of current t.v shows that one of the main cast goes missing for an episode and is never explained, sometimes it's mentioned that they're away in court or family business but most of the time nothing is said.
Take last night's episode of Law and Order SVU shown here in Australia.Titled 911 it was about a little girl held captive and Benson(Mariska Hargitay)is talking to her on the phone trying to locate her.Detective Stabler(Christopher Meloni)doesn't appear in the episode at all and his non appearance is never explained.
I have noticed this quite a lot over the last couple of years in the  Law and Order shows, and the CSI shows as well.Anyone know why or has this always happened?

It's called Life On Mars...Basically it's about a detective  inspector from 2006 who is investigating a serial killer when he is knocked over by a speeding car. Waking up, he finds himself mysteriously transported back in time to 1973. Initially struggling to come to terms with his situation, he has to come to terms with the old-fashioned technology and attitude of the day, while figuring out how he came to be trapped in the past.

The shows been described  as a cross between Back to the Future and The Sweeney.

Its good fun with a sometimes surprisingly hard edge to it.

Theres a cop show on over here in the UK at the moment called Life On Mars about a cop from the present who's transported back to 1973 where he has to cope with the different methods of policing that prevailed at the time... ;) Interesting.

I am enjoying that one Gant.  Last night was close to the end for him.   I wonder how /if they will make another series as once they bring him back that really is the end.   Unless he gets knocked down again.

I have also been hooked on Sea of Souls It is about a parapsychology department in Glasgow university.  The last episode was very enlightening!!!  With a pentacle and the points lit with candles.     Different.

I don't watch many TV shows, but I am a sucker for The West Wing.  I think we're only just ahead of you in Australia, because we're on series 5 at the moment.
I don't know about that. Here Channel 9 have butchered this great show firstly by showing it at 10:30 at night then pulling it from the schedule without warning from one week to another.I set the video on Tuesday night for it,but won't be surprised when I go to look at it,that it wasn't on.

Ever since I posted that reply we haven't seen an episode of The West Wing here in Australia.
Now Channel 9 no longer have the rights  (http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/happy/1074.gif) and channel 2 are going to show it from this Thursday night.
They are going back to the start of season 4 but it's just great to get it back on down here. O0

Good news, tgy. 8)  I'm sticking to watching it on DVD.  With The West Wing signing off, it's the end of an era, but I guess the time has come.

Cool.  I don't think it's in the UK yet, but I wasn't too interested because I read some bad reviews from bloggers I trust.  Gotta see it for myself to judge, though I think after West Wing most things will look second rate.  Sutherland is class though.

Watched most of the UK premiere of Grey's Anatomy on five last night.  I don't really go in for hospital dramas (nor for most TV drama), and have never seen anything great about ER, but this was slightly different to the usual fare.

It's set in Seattle, a city I always like to see on screen, but in this first episode there weren't many scenes outside the hospital.  Anyone here like/watch it?  It's not something I'll be rushing to see, but I did enjoy Isaiah Washington (who, of course, gave a brilliant performance in True Crime) and Sandra Oh, who is cool. 8)  I find Ellen Pompeo annoying.

Has anyone watched Navy NCIS?  I will watch it when it comes to five on Saturday, just for fun.  I like some military shows, but not if they are ridiculous - like Ultimate Force was (is?) - or use the same old worn stories.  If it's not crap it might become a guilty pleasure for me. :P

Yeah,I never miss an episode.I love it.Mark Harmon is brilliant.I remember posting in the the bada$$  characters thread that I'd hate to have him as my boss. Also David McCallum as the medical examiner is fun to watch, alas he's appearances in some episodes are too short.

This show was apparently a spin off from JAG which I was never real keen on.

"He Kills People and Cuts Them Up. But They Deserve It. Besides, He’s Neat." (The New York Times)  :D

Miami Herald review (http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/entertainment/television/15642588.htm):

Quote
You gotta love this charming serial killer

Dexter Morgan is a police technician, but like everybody else in South Florida, he longs to be Bryan Norcross. ''Another beautiful day in Miami,'' he muses, basking in the sunshine and sea breeze. ``Mutilated corpses with a chance of showers.''

Consider Dexter, a twisted cop drama about a forensics investigator who moonlights as a serial killer, a weather report on Miami's soul. Consider its forecast gloomy -- but also a perverse pleasure to watch.

On every level -- as drama, as revisionist morality, as statement of profound civic self-loathing ($450,000 of our taxes went into the first episode) -- Dexter is creepy and engrossing. And Michael C. Hall's performance as an amiable sociopath who regards human beings with less affection than pork sandwiches is a mordant masterpiece for which the term ''anti-hero'' is hopelessly inadequate.

Hall, who played a repressed gay funeral director in Six Feet Under, is even deeper in the closet here as Dexter, whose compulsion to kill neighborhood dogs was spotted and rechanneled in childhood by an observant foster father, a cop. Now Dexter kills only other serial killers, which this (theoretically fictional but chillingly realistic) version of South Florida has in abundance.

''Miami is a great place for me -- a great place for me to hone my craft,'' observes Dexter, bubbling with enthusiasm like a psycho Chamber of Commerce spokesman. ``Viva Miami!''[...]

I've really enjoyed the second series of Ricky Gervais's Extras.

I enjoyed the whole series and some of the star cameos were priceless.. but this weeks ep(the last one) with a cameo from Robert DiNiro was hysterical.

Some of the critics havn't been as favourable but I think it's right up there with The Office.

"Denny Crane!"

I love this show. I just finished season one and I love it.

I think James Spader is awsome and William Shatner has probably never been better. It pains me a little to say this but he does give a great performance as Denny Crane. His delivery and chemistry with Spader is wild. Candice Bergen is a nice addition to the cast as well. She holds her own as well.  It's also nice to see Rene Auberjonois getting some face time. I've always though he's a fine actor on actor on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".

I hear Rhona Mitra leaves the show after season one. I say good ridance. She's a dead weight character just like Lake Bell was after she broke up with Spader's character.

I'll have to get a hold of season two and see more of the Shat and Spader goodness!

Not sure if there were, I've never seen T.J. Hooker. There have been two Star Trek references that I know of. One was when Alan Shore mentioned something about a certain organism being called a "cling-on" and Denny Crane responded, "Did you say cling on?" and another one was when Denny Crane opened his cell phone. It made the communicator noise from the original series.

Great to see 24 back on the air for another season, and we're getting it down here only a few weeks behind the States, instead of the usual 6-12 months behind.

We got the first four episodes during the week and from next week back to one episode a week.

I love this show.Keifer Sutherland's character Jack Bauer is indestructible. No matter what happens to him he keeps going and going. He's like the energizer bunny.

How's that song go?

I get knocked down,but I get up again.Very appropriate. :D

In the first episode he gets stabbed in the back, then a minute later he's running from the crooks as if nothing ever happened. :o

I can usually watch three,1 hour shows in just over 2 hours when I fast forward through all the ads.

MONDAY: CSI New York

TUESDAY: NCIS

WEDNESDAY: Cold Case,Without A Trace,24

THURSDAY: Law And Order SVU,Law And Order Criminal Intent

FRIDAY: Nothing worth taping

SATURDAY: The West Wing

SUNDAY: CSI Las Vegas, The Shield

I'm still waiting for the return of CSI Miami and Law And Order.

CL (and Lin), maybe if you want we could start a Grey's Anatomy thread, so that we can discuss the show there -and put spoiler warnings and all. What do you think?

Sounds good to me.   The UK will of course be ages behind you but I will pick it up.   Don't worry about the spoiler I have yet to see it so the character names don't mean too much to me yet.   :)   It starts this week.

I've started watching the new series The Black Donnelly's (which by the way I was surprised to read has nothing to do with the Donnelly's from Canada that were slain in 1880) However the new series is okay so far I will keep watching it to see if I can piece everything together.  It is a bit graphic for me at times, but the story line has kept me interested. Anybody else watching it?

I watched the pilot.

The storyline was a bit hard to follow. Maybe that's just me, but it was utterly incomprehensible at times. I didn't watch Monday's episode -well, actually my roommate was watching it so I did catch a few scenes -loooooved the one where they are getting rid of the body in the abandoned warehouse or whatever it was -and not because of them getting rid of the body, if you know what I mean  ^-^ That Tommy is ... well, he is very ... very well built  :o ;D It was a cool scene.

Speaking of graphic scenes ... is anyone watching Dirt?

No I have been looking for Dirt but I haven't seen it.
But The Black Donnelly's is getting a little disturbing with the last episode, (what Jimmy's blonde girly friend was doing freaked me out!!) And if Tommy and Jenny don't get together and stay together I won't keep watching!! That relationship is the only thing holding me into the show!!

While I have been off work I have caught up on all the recorded programs and have over dosed on the above.  Great way to spend a week of inactivity.

There have been 8 Clint movies in there too.   ;)

"Battlestar Galactica" finished up season three last week with a great episode. This season has been on fire. The first five or so episodes were just ridiculously awesome. Then the trial of Gaius Baltar and the big reveal of the final five Cylons. Damn. Sci-Fi originally only ordered 13 episodes for season four after months of speculaton as to whether or not they were going to cancel the show. Now they've bumped the order up to 20 and have ordered a TV movie as well. The TV movie is too premiere later this year and season four hits in January 2008. 2008! I can't wait that long!

Title: Re: Favorite Current TV Shows
Post by: Brendan on April 16, 2007, 09:38:31 PM
The two episode premiere was the other day. A third episode was aired tonight I believe. Not sure on that one.

It's about several different people who are "invited" to participate in a nation wide illegal road race. They all get a mysterious phone call that tells them to meet in Key West, Florida where a meeting is being held. The meeting goes over what the race is about and the rules and such. From there they all got messages on the cell phones as to where their next destination is. If you're last at the next checkpoint you get a penalty. The winner receives $32 million tax-free. Plus some people are in the race for other reasons. Nathan Fillion's main character is in it in the hopes he'll get his wife back who was kidnapped.

It seems like it could be a fun show but I don't see how they could stretch it for 20-24 episode seasons. 13 episode seasons seem to make more sense. But like I said, it won't last. It's one FOX and it's a Tim Minnear show.

The British version of The Apprentice has started recently, and makes for interesting viewing..
The candidates are a bit less polished than in the American version (with worse teeth, obviously), but you can't help but be amused by some of the patter.
"We work until we bleed" being a particular recent highlight.

Is the American version still running?

It's no longer a current show but The West Wing has finally finished it's run down here. I know we're a couple of years behind everyone else but as you know from my rants in the past, this great show was treated terribly when airing on channel 9 here.First getting shoved to a Tuesday night at 11:00pm to not always being on when advertised to be taken off the air completely with still two and a half seasons left to run.

Thankfully channel 2 grabbed the show and put it on at a decent hour of 8:30pm on Monday nights with double episodes each week, before finishing with the last season on Saturday nights again with double episodes.

One of the best shows in the past ten years and I'll certainly miss it. :'(

Odd, considering I've seen four episodes.  ;) Two more are expected to air but after that it's done. Like I said this wasn't a great show and didn't break any ground but it was a fun, stupid show. It would have been perfect it was aired during the summer and had a 12 or 13 episode run. And if it was on the FX network like Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck.

Recently I’ve been able to take in an all day marathon of the TV show Deadliest Catch on the Discovery channel and I must say that I’m hooked.  Basically the show is about the fishing crews that go out and catch Alaskan King Crab in the Bering Sea west of Alaska.  It’s the roughest part of any ocean and these guys go out and risk their life’s to fish for King Crab with the hope of bringing in a million dollars worth of Crab, or anywhere from $30,000 to $55,000 per deck hand per trip.  It’s very fascinating and to watch what these guys go through is quite an adventure.  Any one that falls overboard has about 4 minutes before they freeze to death in the icy artic ocean not to mention all the other dangers involved with fishing in 10 degree weather and 15 foot waves.

I highly recommend it if anyone has a chance to catch it, no pun intended of course.

I did manage to sit through an entire episode of Ice Road Truckers and it was absolutely horrible.  The concept is interesting but you can only go so far trying to make a TV show out of trucking over ice.  They struggled to keep it interesting throughout and resort to clips of the truckers barking back and forth to each other on the CB using salty and vulgar language with every other word being bleeped out.  To top it off they are making these dangerous runs for De Beers, the one corporation I truly despise.  Overall I give it a 2 and that’s because I’ve never seen a one before.

I just finished watching the first season of Boston Legal. The season finale was very powerful, especially the last minute or so, when the death row guy is being prepared for his execution and starts struggling. The screen goes to black but we can still hear his erratic breathing. Creepy. And sad at the same time, since it was inferred that he was innocent.

It's AWESOME  8) O0 I hope you did not miss it.

Michael C. Hall is fantastic. The nicest and most likeable and charming serial killer you'll ever get to see on TV.
Hard not to like him despite his 'job'.
Watching him evolve and try to fit in a world he doesn't understand and fears will never understand him is quite interesting. Funny, even sometimes, as you'll see.
The cinematography is great, too, which is a plus.
Don't be too distracted by the voice-over. I know that bothered me a little at first, but I got used to it fairly rapidly.

By the way, the show's been renewed for a second season, and Michael C. Hall is nominated for an Emmy.

Damages has just started being shown here. First two episodes were great. Behind the scenes of a big legal proceeding with Glenn Close playing the slimy lawyer and Ted Danson playing an even slimier billionaire who ripped off his employees.

Only drawback is the flashback and forward in the storyline, but apart from that a great show.

When I first checked out an episode I was thinking "who is this pudgy guy trying to look and act hardcore?", as the intro is mega-corny.  But after watching a few episodes, I came to the conclusion the presenter is actually a tough guy - even if he has an armada of bodyguards off-camera.  He interviews some pretty no-joke dudes (street thugs, gang leaders, hitmen, etc...), walks seemingly semi-blind into escalating situations, and remains mostly calm like he knows how to handle hiimself when interviews start going downhill (example, he is talking to some Polish neo-Nazi goons and they continually respond "This is stupid question!" while taking swipes at the camera).
The content is interesting, and the presenter grew on me.  Its kinda cool.

I know it's no longer a current show, but The Soprano's final ever episode was aired down here this week and I won't say anything about the ending in case there are others out there yet to see it, but I did enjoy it.

That cat sitting on the table staring at the picture of Christopher was a hoot and with it freaking Paulie out as well. I thought the cat was a goner when Paulie picked up the broom and just as he's about to take a swing at it, Tony walks in and Paulie starts sweeping the floor.

Definitely one show I'll miss.

The new ratings season starts this week down here, so all the big shows are returning. CSI's, SVU etc, plus some new ones. How long they last since the ongoing writers strike. Who knows?

The only new one that looks interesting is Terminator:The Sarah Connor Choronicles. Anyone been watching this?

Two and a half men seems to be getting better each season. It hadn't been on down here for so long and now it's on each week night at 7pm. So we are catching up fairly rapidly with the laughs.

Charlie Sheen plays the boozer, ladies man to a tee, and John Cryer is perfect as his complete opposite brother.

Robert Wagner has appeared in a few episodes of late here too and it looks like he might become more of a regular cast member.  8)

I think Law & Order has finally jumped the shark.

Tonight's episode was the last from season 17, and Jeremy Sisto played a lawyer. In two weeks time when the 18th season starts, Sisto is now in the main cast playing one of the detectives.  ???

I know other actors have played different characters on the show before, but not on consecutive episodes.

Has anybody been watching the new Kelsey Grammer show Back To You? The first few episodes weren't that great but the last couple have been really good. Especially the episode where they were trying to get rid of the racoon in the attic.

I think it would be hard for this show to be a huge hit, after Grammer spent so long playing the one character on Cheers and then Frasier, he'd be so identified with that character trying something new would be hard to take for some fans.

I do hope Back To You is successful though, it's giving me a laugh each week.

Yep. Either this or spontaneous combustion  ;)

Add (William Petersen -also big CE fan) to the mix, and it's bye-bye AB  ;D

I'm pretty sure Edelstein mentioned this because it is well-known that Laurie is a huge Clint Eastwood fan. That would be quite something if Clint ever appeared on an episode of House.

Good shows getting the ax is nothing but an aftershock of that strike. Boy, didn't this thing hurt the industry.

And from a viewer's point of view, the 3-months hiatus was really bad. I know I lost interest in a couple of shows because of it. You're watching a show you like, then there's the strike, and when that show comes back on the air, you can't even remember what happened last, so you just say f* it. I think that in many cases that's what happened. And some new shows got the worst of it. Too bad.

I don't know the exact reason for it, but a lot of U.S shows are popping up down here very quickly than what we're used to.

Usually the season that has just started in the U.S, we would have to wait until next February or March before we get to see them but in the case of NCIS which is one of my favorites at the moment the first episode of the season which according to epguides.com was shown last Tuesday in the U.S, we're getting to see tonight.  8)

I never saw this british series, but the US version with Harvey Keitel is premiering down here soon. Has anyone seen it?

^^ AH. AH. "Mr Awesome" (how lame is that). I hate reality shows too. Kinda pathetic. The human race is regressing.

Finally saw the first episode of Life On Mars.

I liked it. I always find shows or movies where people go back in the past to be entertaining. The scene where he turns around to see the world trade centre towers was a little eerie.

Jason O'Mara reminds me of Mel Gibson and I especially liked Harvey Keitel's portrayal of the lieutanant with his non PC 1970's police ethic, and Michael Imperioli who was so good as Christopher in The Soprano's is in this with the best moustache I've seen in years.

I started watching Prison Break because of William Fichtner but I like the whole cast now and the plot is very entertaining. Despite some bad comments, I think Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are doing a great job. Robert Knepper is amazing too. I've heard this will be the last season :(

I cant stand House. Always the same thing, exploring all kind of diseases, yuck, it's depressing. Please forgive me, House lovers :P

Dont watch often, but the few times I've seen, Ugly Betty is very good.

Not sure if this is considered a TV show and dont laugh, but I just love The Suite Life of Zack and Cody from Disney Channel. Any similarities between "London Tipton" and Paris Hilton is not mere coincidence ;D)

Has anyone watched "The Wire"? It lasted five seasons on HBO before being canceled. Anyone who has seen it in its entirety has said it's easily one of the greatest shows ever created. I'm currently half way into season three and let me tell you... it is really good stuff. None of this "solve a case in 24 hours" nonsense like other cops shows and the "we instantly got a warrant!" B.S., they take their time exploring situations and developing the story. Going through all the layers and setting up future events. It all just snowballs from one event and remains connected throughout. It's a pretty complex show and it's definitely worth checking out.
Title: Re: Favorite Current TV Shows

I've heard The Wire is excellent.  I'm going to check it out one of these days...Tru Blood started out awesome, but I thought mid-way through the interesting subplots fizzled, cheesy cliffhangers got tiresome, and the introduction of shapeshifters and werewolves felt like lazy writing.  I'll still check out season two though  8)

My favorite newer TV show is The Flight of the Conchords.  Sometimes the "quirkyness" gets a little played out and it takes a few shows to get into the characters, but its still great stuff.

I tried a few Adult Swim cartoons recently and wasn't very impressed except for Venture Bros., which I think is genius.

A new series of the comedy "Not Going Out".   I love it and really like Lee Mack who co wrote it.  It is British humour and there are 'in' jokes about the North/South  divide.

I'd be interested to see the American take on Life On Mars... I really liked this show..

Staying with English comedy I'm currently in to Being Human..

The premise sounds awful.  It's about George, Mitchell and Annie. Three twenty somethings who share a flat and also happen to be a vampire, werewolf and ghost. The show follows their struggles to keep their dark secrets to themselves and attempt to fit in with normal society.. It's a strange mix of comedy and drama but it really works and as the series progress you really start to care for these characters and their plight..

We'll I wasn't over impressed with the idea of Life On Mars till I actually saw it...

I’m a big fan of the show to Richard.  I spent half a night about a month ago watching all the episodes I'd never seen before on You Tube!

One thing that concerns me, however, is the fact that Rick insists that any antique firearm is worth more if it can be fired.  That in it self is alright  but I worry about the fact that the average Joe gets the idea to grab granddads old smoke burner and give it a go.  Not only could it damage the firearm it has the potential to turn into a real catastrophe.(Rick or the History Channel ought to have a disclamer or something.)  Another issue I have is that Pawn Shops always want to take you to the cleaners.  Once they call in the experts and get the solid price for it Rick always wants to give them about half of what it’s worth.  I am AMAZED at the amount of people that are like “OK, lets do the deal”.  I mean, if I found out that I had something worth $15,000 and they only want to give me $7,500 for it there is no way in hell I’m going to give it up.  I’ll find the right buyer and get the difference.  That’s the thing.  Most of the people that go to pawn shops are desprearte for cash so they are willing to let it go for the low ball price instead of doing there homework and walk away with a significant profit.

All that being said, I’m still hooked on the show and I’m about to tune in right now!

Here is the Pawn Stars game, which is actually pretty fun, if your interested in trying your skill at pricing stuff.

Currently catching up on episodes of Miami Ink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Ink).

Started watching How To Make It In America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_make_it_in_america)  O0 and watched the first episode of Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Hospital) this weekend. Pretty good.

I was also stoked to learn that The United States Of Tara (http://www.sho.com/site/tara/home.do) (another awesome Showtime TV show developed by Diablo Cody and Steven Spielberg) was renewed for at least one more season (I do hope there will be more than 3 though). John Corbett announced it on Craig Ferguson over the weekend  8) SUCH a good show.

Does anyone here watch Bones?

It's been going for about 5 seasons but I'd never watched an episode until last week when a friend at work was talking about the author of the books that the series is based on, Kathy Reichs.

I was lucky enough to get the first book in the series last weekend and have watched three episodes from the series this week. Only problem being that they're from different seasons so I'm a little lost trying to find out who's who.

Any fans out there?

I watched two episodes of "Bones" but I am not a real fan ...

But my youngest daughter and I are becoming fans of "Mentalist" with the handsome Patrick Jane / Simon Baker, Australian actor I think ... ;)

I'm a fan. Not one of my favorite shows, but I do like it. I don't read the books though so I don't know how the characters match up, if some were new to the show, etc though.

I'd like to draw your attention to a Image comic by the name of The walking dead.
(Don't worry. It'll all be explained at the bottom of the post)  :D

(http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/6853/0414w.th.jpg) (http://img836.imageshack.us/i/0414w.jpg/)

yup. It's a zombie comic  ;)

The walking dead has been running solid since 2003 and is to this date the best zombie comic I have ever read. The writer (Robert Kirkman) takes his time to tell the story with plenty of interesting character development (so it REALLY hurst when one of them bites the dust :'() and plenty of interesting ideas and dilemmas on how to survive in a world without proper food, water, first aid, transportation, security and of course plenty of zombies...
Along with these basic survival tactics we see our main characters try to handle things like;

(http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/1728/0371t.th.jpg) (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/0371t.jpg/)
GUILT

(http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/8427/0410v.th.jpg) (http://img709.imageshack.us/i/0410v.jpg/)

SORROW

(http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/8293/0469o.th.jpg) (http://img827.imageshack.us/i/0469o.jpg/)

A CHILDS POINT OF VIEW

(http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/4306/0544.th.jpg) (http://img716.imageshack.us/i/0544.jpg/)

RESIGNATION

(http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/2563/0546l.th.jpg) (http://img837.imageshack.us/i/0546l.jpg/)

FATALISM

(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/5657/0547.th.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/i/0547.jpg/)

MADNESS

And a lot of other things that aren't usually handled in zombie movies because there aren't enough time to dwell on them, but here there is plenty of time to explore every dilemma and problem, something that sometimes doesn't work out for the best, but it is the only avaiable option.
As you can see the entire comic is done in black and white, and in my mind that blistering stark contrast REALLY works. Even when it comes to the violence and gore it works...

(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/6195/0421.th.jpg) (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/0421.jpg/)

I highly recommend this comic to any zombie fan who like their zombie experience to be more than just about who can score the most headshots in the shortest time possible.  ;D

You may ask why I've decided to bring up this comic right now, on this thread and the reason is simple.
It's been made into a TV serie by AMC and first episode is comming out 10/31, and even before the first episode has been launched, it has already been greenlit for a second season.  :o
If the TV Series is just half as good as the comic, this is going to be a new favorite show of mine.  8)
in conclusion of this post, here is the trailer  ;D

Throw a crime story or a story based on a historical period at her and she'll be enthralled though  ;D

Christopher, I agree with you and the production of The Walking Dead suggests the gap between TV and film is shortening. This was like a zombie movie in many ways with all that juicy ingredient thrown in, It does have a certain element to be one of the best. It scores on every level. :)

Gant, I think the intention was to imagine what happened after the credits rolled on a Romero film. We may see many different sides to this other than the typical Night of the Living Dead, Zombie thing!

Tonight, I am looking forward to watching Episode Two of The Walking Dead, at 10:00PM on the FX Channel. UK :)

At the end of the first episode of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes was trapped in a tank surrounded by a horde of ghouls.

In the second episode, he needs guts – in more ways than one.

"Guts" is the title of the second episode, and that's significant in more ways than one, for it alludes to both the courage the survivors need and the key to a daring escape plan. What's worth paying attention to, at least to start with, is how the scale of the show quickly shifts from the epic to the claustrophobic. :)

I absolutely loved the first episode of The walking dead.

It set the mood excellently, introduced all the main characters very smoothly, made some hints at the style they might be going for (based on what i've read in the comics) is very well produced, and made several nods to some of the other  zombiemovies.
Quote

That said, I can understand Gant when he says that he felt that he didn't see anything original and I'll agree on that up to a point, but seeing as it's the first episode a proper introduction of the characters is to be preferred over the details of the tinkering with Romero's work. ;)
Some of the things that I think sets the first episode apart from other zombie movies were; The apology/confession to the half eaten zombie. The focus on the joy of having a hot shower after so long. Zombies eat any living meat they can get their hands on, not just humans (sure, I've seen zombies snack on the occasional pigeon or rat, but having a feeding frenzy on a full horse was something new)

One of the things i like about The walking dead is that it takes the time to go into the WHY of how things work the way they do in the Romero movies and some of the explanations and rules that I've previously not thought about are actually very good. (like how it's important that you don't make your first zombiekill unassisted, in case something goes wrong, and that you only shoot zombies as a last resort because the gunshots'll attract more)

Secondly it's the characters; They're all well written and relateable, and if they follow the style of the comic, every single character in the group that the wife is with is going to be fully fleshed out (so it'll hurt even more when some of them eventually becomes zombiesnacks) With several well written and relateable characters comes some good sub plots, as I'm sure I'm not the only one sensing trouble in the horizon once the happy family is united...

Thirdly it's the focus on the small details you forget in a zombie apocalypse; the joy of being able to have a hot shower, a decent meal, or the ability to have a good nights rest knowing that you're 100 % safe.Of course it's not something that's important to the story per see, but it lends a sense of realism to a totally unrealistic story.

btw Nice pic TWOMULES. The thing with the tank wasn't something that's in the comic, and I was kinda hoping he'd find the carkeys inside  ;D

I haven't read anything on Facebook but I believe it originated on Youtube or someplace online, where they can get away with a lot more than network tv.  It proved so popular that it's made it's way to television with Shatner starring.  I never thought as a kid that I'd see one of my heroes (Captain Kirk) in a comedy, and good at it to boot.   He was very good as Denny Crane in Boston Legal, too.

Funny you should ask as I recently caught the pilot episode, which I don't recall watching in it's first run back in the early 80's.  I watched a few episodes and didn't like it.  Maybe that's because I'm an adult now and think his acting in that show is bad, or overdone to say the least.  I was a teen around the time it was on and didn't pay attention to it.  What little I caught I thought was okay but I was more interested in seeing the next Star Trek movie....um, that's with the original cast  :D

My absolute favorite TV show right now is the swedish Komissarie Winter, based on the novels by Åke Edwardson. This show has it all, chilling investigations that build the tension slowly but surely. There's also real depth to the stories with usually melancholy undertones that come from the people that are real, not some cardboard cutouts like in so many other shows. Great actors, perfect execution. I used to think Wallander movies (with Rolf Lassgård as the lead) were the best of the swedish crime movies, but this is now my favorite. The Wallander novels have also been newly filmed in Sweden with an english cast, Kenneth Branagh playing the lead. I think that's pretty bizarre. As an idea it equals to swedes going to Oxford and film the Inspector Morse series with an all swedish cast. And right now David Fincher is in sweden remaking The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's a strange world...  ???

When I find the time, I'll put up a small review of the walking dead tv series first season. My initial thoughts are that aside from what the characters are put through emotionally, it did not follow the graphic novel at all (aside from first episode which was pretty much remade panel for panel). at some points it was good, at other points, downright bad *cough* last episode *cough*

I watched the first episode of the new Tom Selleck series, Blue Bloods last night. Quite enjoyable NYC Police drama about a family of cops, actually the daughter in law (Brigette Moylahan) is a lawyer and the tension between her & her cop brother (Donnie Wahlberg) who bent the rules to find a missing girl and now the perp may walk because of his methods, is very well done.

3 new shows that started airing down here recently that I've been enjoying are Detroit 187, No Ordinary Family & The Defenders. Unfortunately I checked epguides.com over the weekend and these three shows lasted less than one season in The States. :(

Seeing as how I started this thread back in 2004 (I'm surprised it's still going), I may as well weigh in with what I'm watching these days.

My favorite current show by far is Community. I began watching it because I'm a big Chevy Chase fan, but kept watching because the whole ensemble cast is wonderful and it has some very unique writing. I also regularly watch Chuck, being a fan of spy thrillers in general and an even bigger fan of Yvonne Stravhoski.   >:D I also think that Ray Romano's new show Men of a Certain Age is a great mixture of drama and dark comedy.

I also watch Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and a few other shows on the History Channel.

One show I have greatly enjoyed over the past few years but is now off the air is My Name is Earl.

I understand that Justified and Sons of Anarchy may be right up my alley, but I haven't had a chance to watch them yet.

Justified is the only series TV show (apart from some "Masterpiece" things) I've watched in ... more or less forever. I'd be curious to know if we have any other fans on the board.

My favorite current TV show is likely "Damages," although this last season is definitely the weakest of the four. The first three seasons, however, are solid. You can pick them up on DVD. Glenn Close is fantastic and they have some of the most interesting and most intelligent plotting devices of any show on television. I don't watch the show to hear about torture and the plight of our troops. I watch it because it is thought provoking and entertaining. I don't need my TV shows to express political commentaries. If I want a political commentary, and I do, just not while watching my favorite shows, I'll turn on CNN, MSNBC or Fox News. "Law and Order," my favorite show on TV before they sadly and prematurely canceled it, did this all the time, and it was quite annoying. I'm a moderate liberal, so I identify with some of the sentiments, but I don't need a social commentary on our War in Afghanistan while watching TV. My second favorite show is "House MD." I also enjoy "The Good Wife" and "Blue Bloods."

KC, I've never seen "Justified." What's that about, and why did it motivate you to actually watch TV?!? I'm intrigued.

KC, I've never seen "Justified." What's that about, and why did it motivate you to actually watch TV?!? I'm intrigued.

It's about a U.S. marshal with roots in the feuding-hillbillies-and-coal-mining-country of Harlan County, Kentucky See: http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/justified/

I was curious originally because of the Elmore Leonard connection—Season One's first episode was based on a novella by him and he is credited as "executive producer and writer" on the official website, though I'm not sure how much actual writing he's doing. When I watched the first episode, I thought I could discern a certain Clint Eastwood influence (circa Coogan's Bluff) in some of the mannerisms of the lead actor, Timothy Olyphant. Mind, he doesn't look anything like Clint and he certainly doesn't have Clint's charisma, but still, there's something ... something about ... I don't know, the hat, maybe. Though the most interesting character is probably the Olyphant's character's chief antagonist (and occasional ally), played by Walton Goggins.

Goggins on the left, Olyphant (and hat) on the right:

(Reduced from http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/justified/productionShots/img/justified_ps_006.jpg)

I think I was hooked by a line in the first episode, the one that explained the title. Olyphant's character, Marshal Raylan Givens, is working in Florida and he's given a thug 24 hours to get out of town ... literally. The thug doesn't take him seriously. Givens meets him in a restaurant, and a shootout ensues. Result: One dead thug, and Givens is "exiled" back to his home territory in Kentucky. He has an explanation for the fatal shooting, however. "It was justified ... he pulled first."

I loved that detail of "pulled," where most of us Western fans would expect "drew." It sounds so much more authentic. I suspect it's an Elmore Leonard touch.

I've just finally caught up with the last episode of Season Two, after saving it on my DVR since May. It was a smashing finale to the season, and I'm looking forward to next year's shows.

Blue Bloods just started in Finland and after watching the first episode it looks well made but not that original plotwise (if that`s even an english word  ;D ) Still there`s enough entertaining qualities (former Soprano`s writers,Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg) so I probably will watch some more of it in the future.

Btw Justified sounds intresting.I hope they`ll show it in Finland some day.

So how long do you think the new Two and a Half Men will last with Ashton Kucher taking over from Charlie Sheen?

The new season starts this week and we get to see the episode just hours after it airs in the States. Geez, it wasn't that long ago it would be six months before we'd see a show down here. How times have changed.

Love this show! A nice light-hearted half-hour show that you can tune in at anytime and not have to catch up. Another one I love like this is Psych on USA. It's a quick fun show that's entertaining.

On the heavier side, I love HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Showtime's Dexter.  They suck me in, and I'm seriously going to lose some movie watching time when they start!

Gant, I absolutely loved it. O0

The main actors have excellent on screen chemistry and are very believable in their roles. The stories are superb including Werewolf pregnancies and very good supernatural tales each week.
I love the fact that the story is based around two werewolves, 1 vampire and 1 ghost all living together under the same roof, you really do sympathize with their struggles to be more human. I really wish I had watched this show from the start.

Gant, will the BBC be making a new series of this superb show? ???

I just saw a trailer for it and it looks like a good show. Sort of a supernatural genre by the look of it. In the show it says Alcatraz didn't close down in 1963 and one night 300  prisoners just vanished. Now 40 years later they are popping up committing crimes.

It's like Amityville Horror, but sicker. I loved it. Jessica Lange was Perfect in it. Also very good writing-wise. Some of the characters were so angry and resentful, you could feel it in their lines. Razor sharp and whip-smart. And often very very funny in a dark and twisted kind of way... what's not to love?  ;)

To be quite honest, the opening credits got me hooked  :D

a good time to get into a good series.

Yes, you're correct--In fact, Hugh Laurie based his character house on Dirty Harry.

"I do, in my own feeble way, see an element of Dirty Harry in House... In some way, everyone is trying to mimic, consciously or not, that great 70s archetype Dirty Harry - the lone, righteous man."

Set in the 1860s it centers on former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan, whose quest for vengeance has led him to the Union Pacific Railroad's westward construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad.
A nice classic western tale about revenge, friendship, corruption, wasted lives, racism and the harsh life on the frontier after the end of the american civil war. Some things seem a bit sugar coated compared to some of the really gritty series (such as Deadwood) but as a whole it works just fine.

Anyone seen the new Kiefer Sutherland TV show, Touch?

Starts down here in a couple of weeks and the trailer looks interesting. Not quite sure what's it's all about but has something to do with his son is gifted and can see the future or something like that.

This is'nt a current tv show, but I've really been enjoying watching the Shield with my brother while he's been down for the Easter break.  I got him seasons two and three for his birthday and we just got through watching three episodes in a row.  It's really a great tv show!

I just finished watching the final season for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The last few episodes were the best TV I've seen in a long long time. Just trying to guess how it would end and it was edge of your seat stuff.

Hey SK,

Do you own all seven seasons of The Shield or did you borrow them from a friend?  It really is a great show!  It's very addictive makes you want to watch more and more.  My brother is going back home tomorrow and I wont be able to watch anymore of them.  I may have to buy the complete set of The Shield on dvd for myself!

I own all 7 seasons on DVD. I bought the first six last year for only $15 each. The last season was still around $40. I just kept waiting and at the start of my holidays spotted it for $20.

I recommend getting the DVD's if you're a fan of the show. Plenty of extras, such as docos, deleted scenes and episode commentaries.

Thanks SK,

My brother has the first four seasons.  If I do decide to buy The Shield I will defenetely buy it on dvd.  Not sure if they have it on blu-ray or not but I would still buy it on dvd because the blu-ray version would be waaaay to expensive.  The blu-ray version is really only minimally better quality than the dvd version and I just don't see any need in spending twice as much more money on something I can get for half the price of the blu-ray.

Right now at this very minute I'm watching an episode of The Shield from my brother's dvd set collection.  This show is pretty awesome!  It seems to get better as it goes.  What tv show current or past are some of you watching right this minute or will be watching later on this evening depending on where you live.  And are you watching it on tv or from your dvd collection?

Is anyone else watching BBC America's Copper?

It's a bit strange, with some very sudden and sometimes improbable plot twists, but I like it. It's set in New York City in 1864, particularly in the notorious Irish slum Five Points and in several wealthy homes in the far uptown reaches of 23rd Street. The hero is an Irish Civil War vet who's got a job as a detective thanks to his wealthy former comrade in arms, whose life he saved by amputating his leg on the battlefield. (It was really "Corky" Corcoran's black friend, a physician, who performed the emergency surgery, but no one wants that detail to leak out.)

Corky returned home after his service to find his wife gone and his young daughter murdered, and he is obsessed with finding out what happened to the wife and who murdered the child—when he's not busy solving crimes among the downtrodden and the swells, often with the help of the good doctor, who is a forensics wiz far ahead of his time.

I just saw a trailer for a show called Vegas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2262383/) which is premiering here on Sunday after Homeland. It looked OK. Starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, it looks like it's about the early days of Vegas in the 1960's.

Anyone seen it?

I'm afraid the second season of Homeland isn't doing it for me. It really feels like the writers have seen too many episodes of 24 to me. We have 40 minutes of drawn out storyline, for a big 5 minute finale at the end to suck the viewers into the following week. Also having one of the characters survive a gunshot wound to the stomach only for him to get out of the hospital bed the day after surgery and discharge himself is heading down Jack Bauer (24) territory as well.

"Homeland" is the best show currently on television by far. I wish they would drop the trashy romantic subplot though. I thought it was a major mistake when it was introduced in Season 1, and I continue to feel that way.  It's really unrealistic, and really doesn't belong in a show of this calibre.

Plus this stupid sub plot now about the hit and run by the Vice President's son and Brodie's daughter. Complete waste of time. You can see how it's going to get swept under the carpet or they'll turn the blame onto the girl but it doesn't add anything to the show.
Title: Re: Favorite Current TV Shows

I feel like the subplot now at least tells you something about the characters. It shows that Dana is a pretty ethical person, and that there are things her Mom will not do to succeed in politics. It highlights the tension between Brody doing what is right as a father, and doing what he feels he should or must do to accomplish his larger-scale goals. This tension has been a consistent theme of the show. I think the message that character counts is important. I do agree that it does distract from the focus of the show, but unlike the trashy romantic subplot, I can see the reasons why it was done.

Breaking Bad. I watched the pilot sunday, and I'm now up to the beginning of season three. It's a serial in the truest sense, with each episode advancing the overall plot...and while looking when the final episode would air, I think I ran across a huge spoiler, which kind of pisses me off. I guess I'd better stay away from any more searches or anything until I'm caught up. But it's a great show...in fact an amazing show.

Very strange characters, it reminds me of the great "Twin Peaks" series.

I wonder if everything is really soap opera-based? Anyway, for a couple of weeks, more or less, I subscribed to cable and started watching Scandal; I also noticed a slew of "housewives" shows. And there were other shows, but not enough to keep me subscribed.

Today I just learned that Scandal comes on ABC! I don't think it's great TV or anywhere even close, but I'll probably end up watching it...

In Almost Human, that's Karl Urban on the left.  I'm not familiar with the other actor.  Urban currently plays Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek films and, among other things, has played the title role in the film Dredd (Judge Dredd).  I could be mistaken, but I believe Almost Human is airing now.

I watch "Scandal." To be honest, I feel the same way about "Scandal" that I felt about "Homeland" in its first season. I feel like the political intrigue and crisis management elements are really interesting. The acting from the principals, especially Kerry Washington, who plays Olivia Pope, is pretty good, and the stories are mostly well done, but I absolutely hate the trashy romantic subplot. I wish that "Scandal" would ditch the trashy and incredibly unrealistic adultery between between the characters and focus on the psychology of it all, the political back and forth, and the crisis management. I also think "Scandal" takes things to extremes too often, especially recently. When "Scandal" started out it was a bit more realistic and now I think a lot of that realism has been sacrificed in favor of too much drama. Since the trashy stuff is a central focus of "Scandal," even moreso than "Homeland," I don't hold out a lot of hope that my wishes will be fulfilled, but that's pretty much how I feel about "Scandal." I'll be watching when it returns on February 27th.

Here in the US, we're still wallowing in Season 5 of Downton Abbey. Got another episode to regale us later tonight. (http://forums.nyyfans.com/images/smilies/drool.gif)

Other shows I'm DVRing currently (and usually watching within a few days): Justified, Elementary, The Musketeers (from BBC America, and truth to tell I'm a few weeks behind on that one), and History Channel's blood-and-guts reconstruction, Vikings (the third season is about to start after a series of "teasers").

Also an Australian mystery/costume drama with the emphasis on "costume," Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, set in Melbourne in the Jazz Age. This one is showing sporadically on a couple of public broadcasting channels I get. I'm about caught up with Season One and have seen scattered episodes of Season Two. I gather there's (or is to be) a third season, but it hasn't hit our shores as yet.

Speaking of Australians ... Miss Fisher doesn't seem like it would be SK's "thing," but maybe it would be Mrs. SK's? ;)

I've been watching the new Scream TV show. I don't remember ever hearing anything about it until I saw an ad for it the day of its premiere. I was thinking it would be related to the movie series but it isn't. It has a completely different story line but is real self-referential like the original movies were, such as when a student is talking in class about how slasher movies could never be turned into a TV series.

Well, I wouldn't say this is a favorite but it has potential.  My wife's uncle and I watched the premiere episode last night and enjoyed it.  It seems to be off to a good start and hope I hope it turns out to be a decent series.  Nice seeing other Superman alumni, albeit breifly, Dean Cain and Helen Slater.  Kinda cool how they were included in the pilot episode.  I wonder if they'll be recurring characters.

Another series my wife's uncle and I are watching.  With the exception of last night's episode, we're caught up with what's aired so far and are enjoying it.  I just hope it doesn't turn out to be another Lost, where more questions are raised than answered.  So far the show has proven to be both interesting and entertaining.

I also saw Making a Murderer, Gant. I thought it was quite well done, but to me, the documentary seemed incredibly slanted towards the defense perspective. As a result, it was difficult for me to determine what the facts of the case truly were and where the truth lied. Did you also feel that way about the documentary, or did you find it to be balanced? Do you think that Brendan Dassey and/or Steve Avery are guilty or innocent? Feel free to PM me with your thoughts if you would prefer not to discuss in this thread!

I started watching "The Closer" recently. I was initially turned off by the show since I didn't think I'd enjoy Kyra Sedgwick's character's personality, but since she is a criminal profiler, I think it really works for the show! I'm really enjoying it much more than I ever thought that I would. I love watching old shows that I never watched when they were popular but which I later discover!

I watched the second season this past summer, and next week there's a special two hour episode on. I still haven't heard if it's returning for a full third season.

Since the weekend, I've watched most of the Trollope adaptation Doctor Thorne ... or rather Julian Fellowes Presents Doctor Thorne, as it's called in the U.S. (Because Downton Abbey fans might not have heard of Trollope, I suppose.) It's quite delicious.

6 part comedy series set in London. A tall, painfully middle class woman struggling with a difficult family and a job that cannot possibly fund her lifestyle..

No one in this show is happy or even likable.. All are defeated and broken attempting to deflect whatever life
to throw at them..sounds very depressing..its actually absolutely hilarious.. enjoying every second..fresh writing and great acting..

No one watching Westworld ?

I started watching "Westworld." I've seen two episodes. I like the premise of the show. It's very original, and Ed Harris has a prominent role and is doing a great job playing an interesting character. Anthony Hopkins is also in it, who I also like, but appears to have a pretty small role, which I find disappointing. It's also kind of difficult to figure out what the show is actually about. Does that get clearer later on in the series, Gant? It is also overly violent, and highly sexualized, neither of which I like. I plan to keep watching and see how this show develops as it is very original and unique. My impressions of this show are still developing. What are your impressions, Gant? It sounds like you're much further along than I am.
Title: Re: Favorite Current TV Shows

Stick with it AKA, I'd be interested to know what you think..

It's a very interesting show, Not perfect and I did find it a little difficult to follow at times (that's probably just me) Once I'd gotten my head around a certain concept it became a little clearer.. but I don't want to give anything away that might spoilt it for you, tho Hopkin's role is quite large..

There's quite a few surprises in store and some interesting themes explored..

I watched the first season and I'm looking forward to more...
Be cool to discuss it once you've watched it all..

Oh, glad to hear from another Vikings fan!

I've followed the series from the beginning, though I tend to put off catching up ... there is SO much violence on every show. I suppose its historically authentic, but it's a little hard to watch sometimes! I have about a half-dozen episodes from Season Four to catch up with still.

Not exactly current but this show is getting a re run over here. I'd never heard of it..
(Just how many western tv series were there in America late 50's early 60's ?)

TATE 1960

A western show starring David McLean as a bounty hunter/ gunfighter roaming the west and getting involved in all kinds of adventures.. I've only seen the opening episode so far but enjoyed it so I'm gonna watch the whole series..
Lots of interesting guest stars coming up including Robert Redford, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau and Robert Culp to name a few..

Interestingly the main character has a crippled arm making him the first tv hero with a dissability ?

Theres also an episode directed by Ida Lupino who's career greatly interests me so I'll be looking forward to that

and lastly the series was created and mostly written by Harry Julian Fink... who I'm sure all of us have heard of..

Hmm, the plot thickens!

I see by Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tate_(TV_series)) that there were only 13 episodes ... it's no wonder it's rather obscure.

There are some complete episodes available on YouTube. I'll have to check it out sometime.

I've never seen this, but I kind of object to it, since I think that the premise of the show is unrealistic and watching it is needlessly terrifying women all over the country.

I actually talked to some girls at work about this show, and when I asked whether they thought that this could happen in the United States in modern society, that women would become breeders for their male overlords and would be stripped of virtually all their rights, they actually said that they thought it was very possible!

That's the problem that I have with this show. For those that are fans, does anyone else see where I'm coming from on that?

I haven't seen the show but I read the novel years ago in college. I enjoyed the book quite a bit (which was published in 1985).

Oh, and I just remembered that I've seen the 1990 movie version, which I also liked.

I wouldn't call this a "Favorite" current TV show, but the first episode was actually funny, and kinda sad to see what The Karate Kid has been doing for the past twenty or so years. It gets worse after the first episode, but it's a quick season with just 10 half hour episodes.  Both Ralph Macchio and the guy who "swept his leg" back in 1984 (William Zabka) revive their old characters, and they're still competing.

I love The Karate Kid, but that whole set up does sound pretty sad. :D ;D

Gant, I've watched Season 2 and it's definitely worth watching, but I strongly preferred the first season to the second one.

Peter, I've also seen 13 Reasons Why. Season 1 is good. Season 2, not so much. They are planning Season 3 now, and I have no idea what that is even going to be about since the central story was really concluded at the end of the first season.

Gant, I'm also watching "The Kominsky Method," and have watched 3 episodes. So far, I am enjoying it. Gant, it sounds like we have very similar taste in TV! :)

I finished "The Kominsky Method" today. This is what I learned: Alan Arkin is a much better actor than Michael Douglas.

It’s such a shame they don’t make more episodes a year. You watch them all in a couple of days and when it’s such a great show, you want more.

You children are spoiled. We used to have to slog through nine or ten months before we could watch all the episodes in a series for a given year. And we couldn't avoid sitting through commercials.
