Title: What films they offered but he did not do them
Post by: Hemlock on January 16, 2003, 04:53:28 PM
I`m killing time in the nightshift and started to wonder what other films have been offered to Eastwood but he chose not to do them and what was his reasons.
I know that he was offered a role in Apocalypse. Now!and in McKennan`s Gold and luckily he did not do those films.First one is great even without Eastwood and the second is quite boring western.
So is there knowledge about this?

He was offered the role Schwarzenegger took in 'Junior'. He turned it down because he didnt want to be a pregnant doctor. He wanted to be a pregnant cop.

Just kidding around.

Seriously though, I wanna know what movies he's turned down.

I heard that Eastwood at one time was thinking about doing Mr. Majestyk

Here is some more info...

Quote
Master crime novelist Elmore Leonard began as a writer of Westerns, providing the original stories of two distinctive 1950s Westerns--Delmer Daves's 3.10 TO YUMA and Budd Boetticher's THE TALL T. In 1972, Leonard wrote the screenplay for the Clint Eastwood Western JOE KIDD, which was directed by John Sturges. Then, at Eastwood’s request, he wrote the screenplay for MR. MAJESTYK. But, in the meantime, Eastwood acquired the script for HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, and MR. MAJESTYK became a Charles Bronson project. After completing the screenplay, Leonard novelized MR. MAJESTYK. Many of Leonard’s crime novels have been filmed, including 52 PICK-UP by John Frankenheimer, CAT CHASER by Abel Ferrara, GET SHORTY by Barry Sonnenfeld, TOUCH by Paul Schrader, JACKIE BROWN (from the novel RUM PUNCH) by Quentin Tarantino, and, perhaps best of all, OUT OF SIGHT by Steven Soderbergh.

That's stupid.  Out of Sight is a poor man's Jackie Brown, the definitive Leonard adaptation.

Yeah and I like Out of Sight and think that Jackie Brown was too long and boring...but tell me more about the films that Clint turned down.
Mr Majestyk could have been better with Clint.Who knows. Now it is just another forgettable Bronson film.

Out of Sight was a very good movie, but it was a little too stupid with its let's-attribute-every-character-some-odd-trait-because-every-crime-movie-since-tarantino-does-it.  Out of Sight also had J-Lo who isn't up to snuff as an actress, very little personality.
Jackie Brown is brilliant, however.

You are not far from thruth Lucas ;D and I have to be boring again:
Since Jackie Brown and Out Of Sight were not offered to Eastwood they are off topic.Right?
Maybe there was not so many offers to Clint after all.

People! People! Let's TRY to stay on topic, shall we?  :o  ;)

ajay, your last post belongs in this thread (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=295), not here. ;)

Besides McKenna's Gold, Mr. Majestyk and Apocalypse Now, you can add The Killing Fields to the list of films Eastwood turned down or dropped out of. He told Jay Carr (interview published in The Boston Globe, August 2, 1982) that he would have been "miscast" as the real-life journalist Sydney Schanberg. I'm sure I also remember reading (but I can't track down the reference just now) that he was afraid his fans might get a wholly wrong idea about the subject matter of the movie, given the title, if he were cast in it.

KC, I think that was on the Eastwood CD rom where he said that. I don't know if that was the first time that he said it or whether or not that was where you heard it, but I do remember him saying that on the Eastwood CD rom.

Guys, this might sound really crazy, but was he ever offered Forrest Gump and decided not to do it? I thought that I heard somewhere on one of those interview shows that somebody had offered him that, and he turned it down. Is there any truth to that at all, or am I completely mistaken? I don't see him in that role at all, which is why I thought I might have been mistaken. Do you know if there's any truth to that KC? Anybody else ever heard that?

Chuck Norris'  film " Code Of Silence " was written with Clint in mind .......... he passed on the idea and it was tailored to suit Chucks persona .

So Clint Eastwood and Forrest Gump , nobody has heard of this? I'm just crazy, right? I thought somebody would be able to help me out here. Someone who has more information and Eastwood experience than me..someone like KC? MGK? Is it safe to assume this isn't true, and that I pulled it straight out of the sky? Delusional thoughts on my part perhaps?  ;)

AKA, as I recall, it was on a TV interview by someone who didn't seem to know much about Eastwood, possibly Larry King ... he made some remark to the effect, wouldn't you have liked to play Forrest Gump? And Eastwood kind of smirked and said "OLD Gump."

There was never any suggestion he was thought of for the part, let alone offered it ... that would have been absurd on the face of it. Eastwood may be able to play a lot of different sorts of charcters, but I can't imagine him playing an idiot.  ;)

Ahhh, yes, it was Larry King. It was during his Bridges of Madison County interview that he did with Larry King. I watched it, but this was back in 1995. I remembered about Forrest Gump but I wasn't sure about what the question was, and I thought if they were talking about it, it must have been that he was offered it. I'm positive that it was Larry King so it didn't really come out of the sky. There was a reference to it so in that sense I was right. He was not offered it, but it did come up in some conversation so I'm not entirely crazy. Okay, that's good :) Thanks for clearing that up KC :)

If I recall correctly, he was also on the list for Superman (1978) along with Redford and Stallone but the Salkinds eventually went with the (then) unknown Chris Reeve.

Shockley isn't an idiot ... he's just downtrodden by life, like a lot of us. Forrest Gump was represented as a severely mentally challenged person ... or as they say these days, "learning disabled."  :P

Wasn't that Shockley's tagline: "Drunk & downtrodden is as drunk & downtrodden does"?  ;D

Stallone is 5 foot tall?  How tall is Talia Shire, 3 foot 8?

I was making a joke there Smithy. I was being sarcastic, yet again. Maybe I should stop being sarcastic, because obviously no one can ever tell. ;)

It's all good, Nighty.  I was halfway joking myself.  I remember in the Rocky movies that she was a bit shorter than he was and I half jokingly suggested that they put him on a footstool or something to make him look taller. ;D  I will stop this thread hijack now.
