Here is a link that I got from Yahoo about Eastwood in Japan.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=529&ncid=529&e=9&u=/ap/20050406/ap_en_mo/japan_clint_eastwood

Apparently he has not asked for permission yet but Japan is glad to have him there and only ask that he "respect the soldiers".

Welcome ceinjapan, and thanks for the info. :)  It's good to hear from Eastwood fans over there.  It'll be interesting to get more reaction from Japan as the film(s) develop.

Thanks for the link Gino.  I liked the photo.

Thanks, ceinjapan. Your English is just fine. I edited your post to change the sign for "thumbs down" (which means, "I don't like it") to "thumbs up" (which means, "I like it"). I'm sure that was what you meant!

thanks KC for correcting my mistake.
Todays I read Japanese NewsPaper.
it says that clintEastwood said he planed to make two Ioujima films, one is for American and others is for Japanese.
Also TV news said Japanese version would be shooted by Japanese director.
Is this his joke??

answering your questions vik
Eastwood has a big popularity here  especially over 30's ages even his boxoffice number is not good, compared to 70's.
Japanese critics love him movies too.SpaceCowboys and Mi stickRiver was top non Japanese luggage films of year by critics votes on 2000 and last year.
Unfortunately We have to wait 2 months more to see MillionDollarBaby.Release date was just announced last week,May 28th............
About Ioujima, the island is used as  Air Self Defense Force base after Us returned it  to Japan at 1968.
So if Clint shoot at Ioujima,we can not watch shooting.

There are bunch of  unexploded shells and if Clint shoot films around summer.it must be over100 degrees.
I hope he and his old crews ,is Mr Bumsted coming?  will be fine in whole shooting.

Clint Eastwood meets Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara in Tokyo on Wednesday.
TOKYO — Oscar-winning Hollywood star and director Clint Eastwood visited Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara at his office in Tokyo on Wednesday to seek support for his next movie about the six U.S. military personnel who planted the American flag on Iwo Jima in World War II.

The 74-year-old Eastwood, who won the best picture and best director Oscars this year for "Million Dollar Baby," arrived in Japan on Sunday for his first visit since 1962. On Tuesday, he went to Iwo Jima, one of the Ogasawara islands in the Pacific 1,200 kms south of Tokyo.

During their 45-minute meeting, Ishihara, 72, asked Eastwood to respect Japan's fallen soldiers, according to an AP report. Ishihara asked Eastwood to avoid sacred sites of the dead if he films on the island, Tokyo metropolitan government spokesman Katsumi Kumagai was quoted as saying. Eastwood replied that he would "absolutely not" trample on Japanese feelings.

The Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 left 21,000 Japanese and 6,800 U.S. soldiers dead in one month. It produced one of the most impressive images of the war, a photograph of six U.S. Marines raising a U.S. flag on the high point of the island.

The photo, by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, was the subject of controversy after it emerged it had not been taken under fire as previously reported but may have been posed.

Eastwood is set to direct an adaptation of the book "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley and Ron Powers. It chronicles one man's attempt to piece together his father's role in raising the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima.

At the end of their meeting, Ishihara also asked Eastwood about his experience as mayor of Carmel in California in the 1980s. (Wire reports)

Eastwood 'must respect war dead'

The film marks Eastwood's second collaboration with Spielberg
The governor of Tokyo has asked Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood to respect Japan's sacred war sites when he comes to make his new film.
Eastwood will direct an adaptation of best-selling book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima later this year.

He told Governor Shintaro Ishihara that he would "absolutely not" trample on Japanese feelings.

The battle for the island of Iwo Jima, in 1945, left 21,000 Japanese and 6,800 US soldiers dead in a single month.

The World War II battle was a turning point in the fight for control of the Pacific.

Many of the Japanese soldiers who died on the island, 1,200 kilometres south of Tokyo, remain unaccounted for more than half a century later.

The Iwo Jima Memorial in Virginia commemorates the battle

Relatives of fallen Japanese soldiers have opposed any building on the island which they consider to be hallowed ground.

The director hopes to begin filming on the island later this year, but has yet to ask Tokyo's permission, metropolitan government spokesman Katsumi Kumagai said.

The battle of Iwo Jima produced one of the war's most enduring images - a photograph of six US marines raising a flag on the flank of Mount Suribachi, the island's highest point.

Flags of Our Fathers is the second collaboration between Eastwood and Steven Spielberg, following The Bridges of Madison County in 1995.

It is being written by Paul Haggis, who wrote the screenplay for Eastwood's recent Oscar-winning film Million Dollar Baby.

Thanks ceinjapan ... we are interested! This has been reported here once or twice before, most recently in this thread:
http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=4157.0

From the New York Times, Mar. 14, as quoted in the above thread:
Quote
Mr. Haggis and Mr. Eastwood are also collaborating on an ambitious idea to simultaneously produce a second Iwo Jima film. An unknown writer, Iris Yama$#!ta, has been hired to write the script with Mr. Haggis for a movie that would be told from the Japanese point of view and shot in Japanese side by side with "Flags of Our Fathers."

If you hear any more details, please let us know!  8)

After reading many news about Clint's visit to Japan, I have found this map and info of the Iwo Jima Island.

I find this very interesting, and believe the photo shown on the page must be the historical photo mentioned !?

Interesting to see what comes out of this.
