Title: Rank The Eastwood Westerns You Have Seen
Post by: EwFan62 on April 06, 2003, 06:30:23 AM
What are everyone's favorite Eastwood Westerns ranked in order of preference? I guess my picks would go something like this:

Unforgiven
For A Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Pale Rider
High Plains Drifter
Fistful Of Dollars
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Hang "Em High
Joe Kidd
Two Mules For Sister Sara

1.   The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
2.   Unforgiven
3.   For a Few Dollars More
4.   The Outlaw Josey Wales
5.   High Plains Drifter
6.   A Fistful of Dollars
7.   Pale Rider
8.   Hang 'em High
9.   Two Mules for Sister Sara
10. Joe Kidd

Note:  #'s 1 and 2 are real close.... sometimes they change places.  For a Few Dollars More was my favorite for a looooong time but GBU kept growing on me with every viewing, whereas FAFDM always remained about the same... (which is still damn good.)  8)

"For A Few Dollars More" was long my favorite Western and even though it remains my favorite SW, once I saw "Unforgiven" and then grabbed Warners terrific 10th Anniversary 2-disc DVD, well the top spot had a new occupant. :) I pretty much love everything about "Unforgiven", from the story to the characters to the direction, score, cinematography and acting. I find it to be an emotional film on several levels and lets face it, the movie is violent, William Munny is a violent man but you have this type of story unfold before you and then it end's with the gorgeous "Claudia's Theme" over the closing credits. It makes for an almost surreal beauty to the whole affair.

As for "FAFDM", I love the interplay between Eastwood and Van Cleef and how that also plays off against Volante's "maniacal" character. The score is magnificent also. "TGTBATU" pretty much speaks for itself IMHO, though I really think that film is Wallach's show.  Both "Pale Rider" and "High Plains Drifter" appeal to me because I like the "gothic" or "supernatural" element that each has and "FOD" started it all basically. :)

I am astonished, Holden, at your placing of PR and OJW at equal pegging!  I would have thought on any analysis OJW outstrips PR - in originality, scope, performance, themes, believability, having Sondra Locke in it...  ;)  To each their own.

Here's mine:

1.  The Outlaw Josey Wales 8)
2.  Unforgiven
3.  The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
4.  For a Few Dollars More
5.  A Fistful of Dollars
6.  High Plains Drifter
7.  Hang 'em High
8.  Two Mules for Sister Sara :-[
9.  Pale Rider :-\

10. Joe Kidd ::)

Holden, thanks for your list. I find it very interesting too that you would place Pale Rider above The Outlaw Josey Wales , although you did give both films a B+. Rating The Outlaw Josey Wales as the seventh film out of ten is somewhat curious, but I like that everyone has different opinions. Some would place that film at the very top when it comes to ranking Eastwood's westerns, so what was it about the film that led you to rate it comparatively low on your list, and more interestingly, what is it about Pale Rider that you find more valuable, or enjoyable? I like Pale Rider too, and wouldn't place it as low as Daisy, but I wouldn't place it higher than The Outlaw of Josey Wales either. Can you give us a little review of the two, or give us a little thought as to why you would rate Pale Rider higher. Thanks Holden :)

5. High Plains Drifter

Nightwing, you've actually seen most of them, but you still need to see Two Mules for Sister Sara and Joe Kidd . Certainly I think both are worth viewing, and Sara actually has it's fair share of laughs and amusing scenes, so I think you'd probably find it quite enjoyable.

And some good action sequences - especially the terrific battle at the end, sheer mayhem!  Any movie starring Clint and directed by Don Seigel has got to be worth catching.

It is just not as satisfying as it should be - can't quite pin it down.  It is certainly better than the dull Joe Kidd and the by-the-numbers derivative Pale Rider.

Its hard to rank them as most of them are equally great.
1.Pale rider
2.Outlaw Josey Wales
3.Good,bad and ugly
4.Unforgiven
5.High plains drifter
6.Hang 'em high
7.For a few dollars more
8.Fistful of dollars
9.Two mules for sister Sara

I think Clint's westerns are the best. They all have a real story and an issue, not just the usual shoot-fight-drink-chase scenario.

I guess we disagree heavily on this Daisy.I see beauty in "Pale rider".To me its no worse than Unforgiven. After all, westerns arent really such a masterpiece to make.Lets face it.All that keeps them separated is different story and characters.

God I hope this ain't gonna be too controversial now...

1-The good the bad and the ugly
2-For a few dollars more
3-Outlay Josey wales
4-High plains drifter
5-Fistful of dollars
6-two mules for sister sara
7-Unforgiven
8-Hang em high
9-Joe kidd
10-Pale rider

Now some of em I havent watched in a while so maybe I should re-watch all of them to get an accurate opinion.
I watched unforgiven a week ago and again,I tried, I really did try to like it as much as everyone else seems too but I just can't. I mean I like it but it's not in my top ten eastwood movies :'(, I just can't see the masterpiece that everyone else seems to see. Sorry  :-[

 :o Aaaaargh!

Sacrilege!  ;D

I think some of the finest and purest moments of cinematic art come in westerns:  Red River, Rio Bravo, My Darling Clementine, The Searchers...

They are like Grand Opera - the generic conventions are standard but artists of genius can ring the changes to classic effect.

I put OJW and Unforgiven in this catagory. 8)

I'm afraid that, as a mystic rehash of Shane, Pale Rider just doesn't do it for me... ;)

A mixture of Shane and his own High plains drifter was the way Warner bros stated it in 1985 .

Misty71 You may not know it but you are not alone a few of us including myself feel exactly the way you do about Unforgiven . I watched the new DVD recently and came away with how beautiful it was to look at , this and my favourite moments were all I was left with , I had not seen the film for nearly 10years . So don't feel too bad , we have all come to respect each others likes and dislikes .
As for my list ....

The outlaw Josey Wales
High plains drifter
Fistful of dollars
For a few dollars more
The Good , the bad and the ugly
Pale rider
Hang em' high
Two mules for Sister Sara
Unforgiven
Joe Kidd

Yes, Misty, you're not alone, and it's perfectly okay not to like some of Clint's films, even if the ones that you happen to not be too fond of are some of the ones that many consider his best. That's cool. Not everybody loves Unforgiven . I don't happen to be with you on this point, but that's okay. For me, Unforgiven isn't the most enjoyable of Clint's films, but artistically, it's one of his best, but that's just my opinion.

Philo, that's pretty low on your list of favorites...below Two Mules man? Geez. That's cool though man. I think Josey is really good too!

1. The Outlaw Josey Wales
2. High Plains Drifter
3. Hang 'em high
4. Unforgiven
5. A Fistful of Dollars
6. The Good the bad and the ugly
7. For a few dollars more

9. Pale Rider
10. Joe Kidd

Title: Re:Rank The Eastwood Westerns You Have Seen

      I would rank
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
High Plains Drifter
The Outlaw Josey Wals
Unforgiven
     as masterpieces.

Pale Rider tries for that status, but falls short.

Two Mules for Sister Sara is good, but hardly great.  Entertaining.  Probably intended to capitalize on Eastwood's popularity, with a big name like Shirley MacLaine thrown in.  (Yes, I know she received top billing, but it's clearly Clint's movie.)

Hang 'Em High ...above average western, with its own aspirations.

Joe Kidd... I never particularly cared for the movie even when I was young.   Mostly forgetable.

I watched Two Mules for Sister Sara last night, and although it was the first time I'd seen it on DVD and in widescreen format, it was pretty unenjoyable for me.  It hasn't grown on me at all with repeated viewings like most all of Eastwood's other films.   But, it's still an Eastwood western, so it's worth watching.

Matt, I agree on that sentiment.  You may have noticed Two Mules for Sister Sara was last on my list.  It is my least favorite of Eastwood's Westerns.  I liked Joe Kidd much better than it.  A Nun who is actually a whore, yeah that's real great.  The movie just never appealed to me all that much, that and I hate the actress that played said Sister Sara. :P

Two mules rocks! the DVD contains 9 additional minutes of footage, and the quality is great. My favorite. Shirely is great in it.

1. Two Mules for Sister Sara
2. Fistful
3. For a Few Dollars More
4. The GTBATU

great non westerns
Where Eagles Dare, Coogan's Bluff.

That is a bold statment Fan. You got balls.  8)   but I thought Shirley was hot in that too.

I know this is an old thread but having got thru the whole thing I feel as if I should add my two cents worth, even if my opinion varies from month to month.

High Plains Drifter
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
For a Few Dollars More
Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Two Mules for Sister Sara
Fistful of Dollars
Hang 'Em High
Pale Rider

'The Outlaw Josey Wales' and the 2nd and 3rd Spagetti Westerns.  All three belong right up at the top.

I am yet to form a definitive opinion of 'Unforgiven', but it is between middling and best.
Pale Rider belongs somewhere in the middle.

Unlike many here, I don't think that highly of 'High Plains Drifter'.  It has a slightly amaturish feel to it (not surprising seeing that it was the first Western that Clint directed).  I feel that that film represents a learning curve in Clint's directorial career.  I found his first directorial role on 'Play Misty for Me' much more impressive.  So in effect HPD is low on my list.

1. GBU
2. Pale Rider
3. High Plains Drifter
4. Josey Wales
5. Rawhide

GBU for the obvious reasons (see elsewhere on this board).

Pale Rider, if only for this oneliner: "There's nothing like a nice piece of hickory".

I consider High Plains Drifter to be the most enigmatic of all. What are the main character's motives? And why this explicit rape scene?

The plot of Josey Wales is not breathtaking, but somehow the picture seems to depict an authentic atmosphere as regards the Civil War and its aftermath (and the bluecoats don't get much credit, to put it mildly).

Rawhide: the heritage of those good old times of black and white tv.

I saw the other westerns too. They are OK, but ranking them would be more or less arbitrary.

Remember the sheriff who was whipped to death? Clint playes the sheriff's brother, exacting revenge on the murderers and on the town for not doing anything. He said that in an interview on Inside the Actor's Studio. Just letting you know.

As for the rape scene, I agree with you, I didn't like it either.

Hi. I'm new (obviously), and it's been far too long since I've seen most of Clint's westerns to rank them all. But I thought I'd list the top three, and then comment on one of them in particular, purely because of the last few posts.

1. Unforgiven -- simply the best movie of all time
2. High Plains Drifter
3. GBU

What I wanted to say, though, concerns High Plains Drifter and especially what everyone has taken as the "inexplicable" rape scene.Without this scene, I don't know that I would have rated it above GBU, and I think the scene makes the most sense in the context of the Eastwood western tradition that precedes it. Take GBU: this is a film were "morality" is reduced to little more than a choice of style. What in the actions of the three main characters really justifies their respective depiction as "good", "bad" and "ugly"? In fact, the very inclusion of "ugly" here already points to the reduction of moral choice to stylistic choice.. In terms of conventional morality, especially as represented in "law and order", all three characters are "bad" in the moral sense. If anything, it is in fact the "ugly" who is the most "bad" in the moral sense of the term, at least in the sense that he appears little more than a common criminal. But that's exactly the point: if the "bad" earns that title, it's because he has a certain style about him, while the "ugly" earns our pity, since he could never hope to have that style. The"bad" is thus worse than the "ugly", since the "ugly", being devoid of style, couldn't ever hope to participate in a moral system that is so aligned with the aesthetic. (To appreciate the point, it helps to think about the way inwhich the terms "good" and "bad" are judgements both of moral actions and of aesthetic products.) If the ugly never stood a chance of being the good, then that leaves only the good and the bad as contrasting characters, and -- again -- what really separates these two? Not the morality of their actions, that's for sure. If we sympathise with one (the good) rather than the other (the bad), therefore, it's because we like Clint's _style_.

Put in the context of a questioning of morality, the rape scene is absolutely crucial to High Plains Drifter. The scene removes even the _aesthetic_ basis for judging the "hero's" actions.Unlike the "good", the high plains drifter can't even be called stylish, for who would see rape as an aesthetic ideal? He is who he is, and he does what he does, and their is neither a moral nor an aesthethic framework for  explaining our sympathy towards him, assuming that he holds our sympathy. And if not, then how can we sympathise with the "good"? After all, the rape is the only thing that separates the two characters. In fact, the drifter has more "moral" justification for his actions than the "good", at least if we see his vengance as justified. So I think that the rape scene has to be in the film, and I see it as the first step in Clint's struggle with the Western tradition he helped create. And from High Plains Drifter, where do you go but to Unforgiven ("Deserve's got nothing to do with it")?

Sorry for the long rant. I just wanted to give myself and others something to think about.

Hi, robluvsnic, and welcome to the board. Those are some interesting points you raise about "The Good" and the Stranger. You may want to comment further in a thread we have going down in the "Film Discussion" forum ... here:

HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER: The Story 2: The Rape Scene (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?board=15;action=display;threadid=1477)

Oh, and by the way ... on this board, you don't have to use the "underscore" key to emphasize something. Just select or highlight the text you want to emphazize, then click the "italics" button (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/YaBBImages/italicize.gif) in the top row of buttons above the "Message" window. Or, you can use bold: (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/YaBBImages/bold.gif)

I agree, i didnt think that Unforgiven matched the dollars triligy, although  havent seen all of the Eastwood films, but I'm getting Pale Rider and TOJW for christmas, but Unforgiven is not the best

Only seen 5, so i'll just rank my top 5...

1. The good, the bad, and the ugly... best movie i've ever seen, head and shoulders above the rest i've seen, its not even close to no.2. this may sound wierd, specially considering i'm on this forum, but i'm not even sure clint is my favorite actor in this movie... van cleef is amazing. He is the perfect villain IMO.

2. For a few dollars more... Loved it, but again not even close to the good the bad and the ugly

3. Hang 'em high... liked the plot more than anything else, but was still a great movie

4. Outlaw josey wales... was ok, my expectations were high after hearing such great things about it, i was slightly disapointed, but still a decent movie

5. A fistful of dollars... not a great movie, but still enjoyable, i liked the mule scene in the beginning and the showdown at the end, but everything in the middle wasnt anything special.

Thanks for the welcome, KC. I'll definitely have a look at that thread, although I hate coming into these things when they've already been going for so long. I read through the Unforgiven thread yesterday, and just kept wishing that I'd discovered these forums a year ago!

As for the style tags I assume that they're the standard square bracket versions of html tags. The problem, though, is that for some bizarre reason, when I enter text into the message field it shows up as white against a white textfield! I can't see what I'm typing (hence the odd typo)...

I ranked GBU above all others because it is by far the best western (with or without Clint Eastwood). As for the acting: Clint Eastwood is adequate in GBU, but in other westerns, like High Plains Drifter or Pale Rider, his performance surpasses that in GBU. By the way: Eli Wallach as Tuco is the best actor in GBU, while Lee Van Cleef is at least as good as Clint Eastwood in that movie.

1. The Good The Bad And The Ugly... unratable
2. For A Few Dollars More... 10
3. Unforgiven...10
4. A Fistful of Dollars... 9.5
5. The Outlaw Josey Wales...9
6. High Planes Drifter...9
7. Two Mules For Sister Sarah...7.5

It's hard to rate them, especially the first few, but here's my list:

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly;
2. For a Few Dollars More;
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales;
4. High Plains Drifter;
5. A Fistful of Dollars;
6. Unforgiven;
7. Pale Rider;
8. Two Mules for Sister Sara;
9. Hang 'Em High;
10. Joe Kidd.

The only one I didn't have to think about was Joe kidd. It's not even half as good as Hang 'Em High. I enjoy watching it, but there isn't anything I particularly like about it.

Hi all, im new to the board, altough i remember being registered be4, must have been the old board, and there was a large topic voting off all clint's movies, except for 1, which would be the winner. and that was:
outlaw josey wales, altough i think GBU and For a few dollars more are even better.

My favorite westerns of Clints:

Outlaw Josey Wales
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
High Plains Drifter
Unforgiven
For a Few Dollars More
Pale Rider
A Fistful of Dollars
Joe Kidd
Two Mules for Sister Sara
Hang em High

For me Unforgiven won the Oscar for political statements. It was more about rewarding Clint for evolving into a more tallarable person to the people in that industry. Don't get me wrong I think it is a good movie but it is not close to Outlaw or GBU. I also feel that if there was any movie that should of won best picture that didn't it was the Outlaw Josey Wales. Hands down. Just compare that to Dances with Wolves.

I also think if there is ever another movie that Clint is to star in I hope that it is a western! And I don't care how old he is, he still looks good and in shape and it don't have to be that he's the fastest gun. Just the most willing to get it done. Clints biggest problem for movies is like for all of us is that it is had to compete against a standard that you set when you were in your prime years. You adapt and use guile but your prime is your prime for a reason. Still an old Clint beats the hell out of a prime Costner or anyone else in todays market.

Since I'm very new to Westerns and have only seen - of which Eastwood stars in - the dollars trilogy so I'm only rating those 3, I will be watching more Eastwood westerns in the future.
For now here is my small list of 3:

1. For a Few Dollars More - the showdowns with the pocket watch chime is brilliant. And for a villian, u can't get any worse then having Gian Maria Volente as El Indio.
2. The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly - Very good, and IMO was only beaten by a tiny margin, I really like Tuco, for a dangerous bandit he is very funny.
3. Unforgiven - One of Clint's best films, but doesn't have the style that I like of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western.
4. Fistfull of Dollars - Wasn't really special, although I think I sort of ruined it myself for seeing the trilogy in reverse order.

New to the board, but not new to eastwood

1. GBU - sentimental
2. Unforgiven - the heart eastwood put into this
3. FAFDM -  always a favorite
4. FOD - gotta love th 1st in the series
5. OJW-  great western

I haven't seen Pale Rider or High Plains in along time, i'll have to check them out soon.

Also the reason I like GBU before anything else is Sergio Leone. I love all his westerns, even over the ones Clint directed. Sergio had such style. I'd never seen that before and still haven't. His movies stick with you, long after they are done. And 40 years after...it's hard to argue.

This is a cool old thread. I'd say my list is still the same, but I have to admit I haven't watched Unforgiven, Josey Wales or GBU recently to know which I like best. Of the westerns, I still don't own Two Mules or Joe Kidd on DVD. Maybe I oughta get to that sometime. Especially Mules, which I'd still rank higher than Pale Rider and Hang 'em High (two movies I do have on DVD ???).

My (new) ranking would be as follows:

1. High Plains Drifter
2. Pale Rider
3. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
4. The Outlaw Josey Wales
5. For a Few Dollars More

As this ranking seems not to be mainstream, it calls for e few additional comments:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is by far the best film in the list, but I consider it more an Eli Wallach western than a Clint Eastwood western.

Unforgiven is an entertaining movie, but is lacks the magic of my favourites.

I dislike Hang 'm High for the elaborate and explicit public execution scenes. It was my first Clint Eastwood movie and it took many years before I tried another one, which turned out to be GBU. I came across GBU on television. It 'turned my world upside down'.

For some reason, the majority of you liked Unforgiven best, but I didn't like the part he played as much as some of the others. I wish he was just a little bit more like his early western films. Tough, without a care in the world. You knew he never was worried about anybody.

I was , how can I say it, "wrong"...
I watched Unforgiven last night, and I will move it up my list. I liked it a bit better for some reason, and other than him getting his you know what kicked by Hackman, he toughened up at the end and played the ruthless cowboy, they we all have known to love...
I would still put it behind the top 3, but I like it better than The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Hangem High.
My bad, but I am afraid, I still am a fan of the other 3 more...

For me it goes like this:

1. Pale Rider
2. Unforgiven
3. Outlaw Josey Wales
4. For a Few Dollars More

Those are my top 4.  After that it just depends on what mood I'm in as to how I rank the rest of them.

My rankings for Clint's westerns :

1: UNFORGIVEN.

2: OUTLAW JOSEY WALES.

3: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY:

4: FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE.

5: A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS.

6: PALE RIDER.

7: HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER.

8: HANG EM HIGH

9:  TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARAH

10: JOE KIDD.

I must however add that, in my opinion, Hang em High, Two Mules for Sister and especially the bland Joe Kidd hardly belong on the list . While H..E.H. and T.M.F.S.S. (thanks to the Siegel touch) are at least enjoyable, Joe Kidd (despite being based on a Elmore Leonard story, and co-starring Robert Duvall) is a bitter disappointment.  All three are worth seeing, though. Especially, if like me, you're a genre fan. But they are not particularly memorable.

I feel that Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly also belong on a list of the greatest westerns ever made (well my favourite 10). They're  right up there with The Wild Bunch, Ride The High Country, Once Upon a Time in the West,  High Noon,  The Searchers, Stagecoach and Lonesome Dove (the next 10 include The Grey Fox, McCabe and Mrs Mller, The Long Riders, Pat Garret and Billy the Kid and Open Range).
For me, while not a classic, Pale Rider is a trifle underrated by Eastwood fans.  I think Clint's greatest performances in the western are his riveting turns in Unforgiven and Outlaw Josey Wales (one of the most most beautiful and touching films of Clint's career).  The 3 Sergio Leone films are the best directed of all the Eastwood westerns (and the music is amazing).  The man was a genius.  I feel while Clint was super cool and pretty good in the Leon flicks, the best performances in these glorious spaghetti westerns come from Lee van Cleef (TGTBTU, FAFDM), Eli Wallach (FAFDM), Gian Maria Volonte (AFOD) and Klaus Kinski (FAFDM).

The two Eastwood westerns I can watch over and over again are Unforgiven and Outlaw Josey Wales. But I also watch the 3 Leone flicks over and over again. Hell, I'm even planning to do Hang em High again this weekend - but not for aesthetic reasons.  Well that's my five cents worth.
And, while it's probably not the place to say it, I just have to. Wasn't Gran Torino great. I wept like a baby at the end of it and didn't want to leave the theatre. Now if Walt wasn't an urban cowboy, who is?

The Rawhide shows were masterpieces because those were the days when men were men and women were women.  Cigs were okay to smoke.  Whiskey was okay to drink.  And it was okay to fight and spit as long as you remained standing.  If you proposed a show like that today, they would wheel you off in a strait-jacket.  I love the stories, the characters and pure entertainment of the cattle drive -- beef and beer, leather and plenty of bullsh*t.  I usually like to open a brew or pour a shot when they're having one.   ;D.
