Title: Movie Night -- Million Dollar Baby, February 16, 2008
Post by: The Schofield Kid on February 09, 2008, 02:57:23 AM
This is the Movie Night Thread for Million Dollar Baby. We’ll meet up here up to an hour before we start rolling the film on Saturday February 16th. For anyone who’d like to join us…have your Million Dollar Baby DVD ready to play that night. Check here to see what time we’ll be starting the film in your area:

U.S West Coast (PST) 1:00PM
Mid U.S (CST) 3:00PM
U.S East Coast (EST) 4:00PM
Great Britain, Portugal (GMT, WET) 9:00PM
France, Italy (CET) 10:00PM
Finland (EET) 11:00PM

If anyone needs to check other times zones, check out this site:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

We’ll be starting the movie at the first frame of film, which is the beginning of the Lakeshore Entertainment Logo.

Have your DVD set up here and paused, we’ll all be hitting play on the hour.

We’ll be taking three short breaks during the film (usually around ten minutes).

The first break is at the start of Chapter 6. (33:35 on the R-4 DVD)

A shot of Scrap, this is after the scene where Frankie finally agrees to train Maggie.

The second break is at the beginning of chapter 11, (1:09:40 on the R-4 DVD)

Frankie and Maggie drive into the trailer park where Maggie's family live. This is after the scene where Maggie asks Frankie if he'll come with her to tell her mother she has bought a house for her.

The third break is at the beginning of chapter 15, (1:36:16 on the R-4 DVD)

Frankie is praying in the chapel. This is after the scene where Maggie has been moved into the Serenity Glen Rehabilitation Centre.

Please note that all chapters and times are for Region 4 DVD’s and may not be the same for other regions.

I’m starting this thread early so the event could be added to the calendar – All events must have a thread to link to.

By default, this board gives you a warning message when someone else has posted while you're writing a post. That can get very frustrating in the heat of things in these threads ... but now the feature can be turned off, temporarily (or permanently if you prefer).

To turn it off, click the link on the brown bar near the top of the page to your profile: (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/Themes/WesternMocha/images/english/profile.gif)

You'll go to your profile page. On the left-hand side, there's a list of stuff you can do here including "Modify profile." Under that heading, click the link to "Look and Layout Preferences." Now you'll see some choices with little white checkboxes next to them. One of them is "Don't warn on new replies made while posting." Click in that box so there's a check mark there. Then, in the lower right hand corner, click "Change profile" and you're all set.

I find it also helps to use the keyboard shortcut when posting: alt+s. (Or in the latest version of Firefox, alt+shift+s.)

You can also use the "Quick Reply" feature: At the bottom of each thread is a brown bar with "Quick Reply" on the left hand corner. If you don't have it enabled, that's all you'll see and there will be a plus sign to the left of "Quick Reply." Click the plus sign, and a reply box will open beneath the brown bar and will stay there until you click the sign (now a minus) next to "Quick Reply" again. You can type your post right in this box and don't have to wait for a "Reply" page to open. It's a little harder to use smilies, though, unless you remember all the shortcuts!

Why's that KC?

Partly because I don't like ... what are we supposed to call them nowadays? ... mentally challenged people in general, and partly because I don't like the performance of the actor who impersonates him. He puts too much emphasis on "talking ungrammatically," for one thing.

Yes, of course. In the movies they're always a bid for our sympathy. In real life, I do try to treat everyone I encounter the same and not judge.

Yes, of course. In the movies they're always a bid for our sympathy. In real life, I do try to treat everyone I encounter the same and not judge.

Ok, there just was two ways to read your post. Good to clear that up!

Frankie has almost always half his face bathed in darkness. From the cinematography only you can tell something is going on with him. You can see his hurt.

To quote Tightrope: "There's a darkness inside all of us"

That's so true in this film.

I asked because I've never heard about it before. Can anyone tell more about it? In what part of the world people speak it?

It is the Irish language and is spoken still in some areas and taught in schools.  ike the Welsh and the Scottish Galic.

Not sure how the chapters go in other regions, but you should be in the scene where Frankie agrees to train Maggie, right after he gives his word and just before he starts giving her tips.

Lucia Rijker has been undefeated her whole career. Never lost a fight. Nicknamed "The Most Dangerous Woman in the World." That certainly shows in that film, where  she seems to have a lot in common with her character.

Ever notice how many "black" transitions there are in this film? That is, something black gets in front of the camera, and then we cut to a new scene. Great foreshadowing of the blackness at the end.

It was Hilary Swank's dog! She talked about it on one of the late-night talk shows.

I found it ...

It's from Jay Leno's Tonight Show on December 21, 2004.

Quote
JAY LENO: Now your dog, who I was just talking to in the dressing room, I was just talking with you about it ...
        HILARY SWANK: Yes, Karoo ...
LENO: Now he's in the film too, and he has a bit of an attitude now that he’s in ...
SWANK: I know, I'm in Karoo's dressing room.
LENO: Show the photo, now this is ... tell us who that is. That's that scene where you see the girl in the ...
SWANK: That's Karoo. Well, that's Morgan, first of all, that's Clint's daughter ...
        LENO: OK ...
SWANK: Gorgeous, right? And that's Karoo. I found Karoo in South Africa.
        LENO: South Africa?
SWANK: Yes, in South Africa, I was doing a film there and I hopped over a fence and there was this little fat dog looking at me, looking up at me and thinking "Where the heck did he come from?" and I brought her home and now she's in Clint Eastwood movies.
LENO: Wow, that’s ... Lassie would be jealous, that's pretty good!
SWANK: Yeah, well the funny thing was, once she was in the movie, 'cause they said there was supposed to be a little dog in the scene, I said, oh, Karoo's here, and they said Yep, and you know Clint, he’s like [does Eastwood imitation; gestures] "Bring her on, come on, bring her on." So I brought her in, she sat down in Morgan's lap, and I said, well, does she get a credit? You know, "Dog in car: Karoo Swank?"
        LENO: Sure ...
SWANK: And I told Chad that when I got home, and he got a little upset, and I didn't understand why, and he said, it should be Karoo Swank-Lowe. So it's now "Dog in car: Karoo Swank-Lowe."
        LENO: Oh, there you go!

Never noticed that. He really takes 2? I thought he just took a bunch of em.
But yeah, maybe he was keeping one for himself ... who knows, maybe after that slice of pie ...  :-\ :-X

What scene? At the church? Did what already?
Yes, the end of the scene at the church. I think he means "I killed her already."

You should have recorded a special message on your answering machine  ;)

"Please HANG UP NOW! That ringing is disturbing. Don't even leave a message -OK, maybe just a lil' one if it's really urgent ... I'm watching an Eastwood film"  ;D

After she bites her tongue, she can't talk. So the last time we hear her voice is when she asks him to kill her.

This scene reminds me of the finale of Die Walküre, when Wotan kisses Brünnhilde.

Yes, the first time we see it. Don't recall it, though.

Once again, an Eastwood character is "the angel of death" ... and "rides" into the "sunset."

Actually, according to the law as I understand it, she didn't need his help. She was of sound mind; all she needed to do was ask for the respirator to be shut off. I could be wrong, though.

Frankie walks out.

Notice how he walks toward the light at the end of that corridor? It's supposed to be the exit, but it means something else totally ... very symbolic.

OK, somehow I missed the second when he tells her what "Mo cuishle" means. He says, "My darling, my blood," right? That is ... fully in keeping with his profession as "cut man."

Now the final credits ...

My old German drama teacher used to say, "Tragedy is when someone has two choices, and they're both wrong." At this moment, the film becomes Frankie Dunn's tragedy.

This story is too sad, I cry last even this story  I watch how many times . :'(
But , today it's a little difference because I was with you all! Thanks everybody. :)

Is it true that Old Clint lose a son (his first son and he still life!)in his old day ? :'(
So this seems to lead to the event of his past! :'(

As far as I know, all of Clint's children are still living, so I don't know anything about that story.

By the way ... Higashimori's presence here reminded me that AMC (here in the U.S.) is showing Letters from Iwo Jima at 8:00 (Eastern) tonight.

Here's the blurb from TV Guide ...

Quote
Letters from Iwo Jima

8:00pm  AMC  ch:35  150min  2006  R
Clint Eastwood's charged companion piece to his "Flags of Our Fathers" examines the World War II battle from the Japanese perspective. Ken Watanabe gives a commanding performance as Imperial general Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who led the defending troops. Kazunari Ninomiya. The film was a Best Picture nominee and Eastwood received a nod for directing the film, which he also coproduced and co-wrote the score with his son Kyle and Michael Stevens. Steven Spielberg also served as producer.

It looks like this was one of the best attended movie nights, if not ever, then definitely in a long long while.

Disappointed I couldn't make it, although I made the decision to go ahead and it looks like it was the right decision. As I've said before I hope we get more regular movie nights in 2008.

Sorry about the confusion about the breaks. I did originally post that the times were for region 4 and may not be the same for other regions, but maybe I should have asked KC to set the break times since I wasn't going to be here. Something to remember for future movie nights.

I see there was confusion at the start as well with the board clock. I noticed a couple of weeks back that it seems to have gained a few minutes ahead of what it should be. Very strange.  ???

A big thank you to everyone who participated in today's Movie Night and I hope to see you there next time. 8)

I just read the comments from the other night. I noticed that AB thought about Clint's voice sounding like Gunny Highway's voice many posts before mind. I thought I was the only one. That was a fun movie night. After reading the posts, I think that I take the film too seriously. I cannot help it though.
I am glad that I was able to join in with you all that night.
