Post by: JSE on June 17, 2008, 12:37:26 AM
Hi all,

Just noticed that we have a couple of new books coming out soon which I'm very much looking forward to.

The first is Clint Eastwood: A Life in Pictures, details of which can be seen here (http://www.chroniclebooks.com/index/main,book-info/store,books/products_id,7627/path,1-42-36/title,Clint-Eastwood-A-Life-in-Pictures/)

...and the other is Aim for the Heart: The films of Clint Eastwood which is due out January 2009 here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aim-Heart-Films-Clint-Eastwood/dp/1845119029).  Can't find a direct link to this one, only Amazon, but please feel free to add details if anyone is able to.

Thanks for the info, JSE. I am looking forward to these two books.

Especially the second one. I was -like many others I'm sure- waiting for an updated version of the Fuensanta Plaza book that sadly never came -and probably never will.

Thanks for the news JSE.

I have the Stanley Kubrick : A Life In Pictures . It is very good quality so adding Clint is a great idea for this series of books.

Aim For The Heart looks very interesting indeed.

Just finished watching it and I have to admit that all of Eastwood fans must own it.I suppose the photos included are more or less familiar to us all,but nevertheless it's a must. The only thing that made me upset  was a notice under a photo taken  during the filming of High Pl... referring to a 1975??? take and a publicity still from FAFDM including Eastwood and Van Cleef, with the later as Mortimer and the notice that this was taken for GBU???.

I'll have my copy of Clint Eastwood: A Life in Pictures by Tuesday next week.

There's also yet another Eastwood book on the way, a critical look at his directorial career by a Canadian author and film historian. Has a tentative due date of the end of December, simultaneously releasing in the U.S. and the U.K....

CLINT EASTWOOD: Evolution of a Filmmaker
HARDCOVER, $44.95 US/£22.95 UK Sterling
ISBN:  0-313-35247-X
ISBN-13: 978-0-313-35247-8

In Clint Eastwood's early directorial efforts there was little to suggest that this was the man who would become the guiding force behind such sublime works as Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, and Letters from Iwo Jima. Yet before our eyes, Eastwood has evolved not only as a director, but also as an actor, a screenwriter, a producer, and a score composer, to become one of the most revered figures in Hollywood. Perhaps it is because he started out in Hollywood with such little influence on the final product that he now demonstrates such a strong desire to collaborate with others and provide help wherever he can. In addition to casting off his reputation as a hack and accumulating two Oscar nominations for Best Actor over the past fifteen years, he has guided other actors to no less than three Academy Award wins. The executives love him because he has made them money over the years--occasionally even "making one for them" in exchange for financial backing on other projects. Critics love him because of the care he takes in creating his films. Audiences love him because he has never lost his sense of entertainment, even as his artistry has matured. Now a two-time Academy Award winner for best director, twice winner of the Directors Guild of America Award for best director, and recipient of countless other critics prizes and nominations in multiple capacities, Eastwood stands alongside Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as one of the finest directors working in modern cinema.

Here, John Foote examines the long, impressive, and unlikely film career of a man who fought against expectations to forge his own way and become one of this generation's finest filmmakers. Each chapter examines a different film, beginning with Play Misty for Me (1971) and High Plains Drifter (1973) and extending to his 21st-century films Space Cowboys (2000), Blood Work (2002), Mystic River (2003), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), and Changeling (2008). This book is, in the author's own words, "a study of how Eastwood managed to quietly get to this level--and a celebration of his gifts as an artist."

Also Clint is one of fifty people interviewed in a brand new book with accompanying DVD documentary called Wisdom: 50 Unique and Original Portraits. He also gets the cover...

"Each one of us can be an oasis of peace" - Desmond Tutu. Inspired by the idea that wisdom is the greatest gift one generation can give to another, award-winning photographer and filmmaker Andrew Zuckerman interviewed, photographed and filmed fifty of the world's great writers, actors, artists, designers, politicians, musicians and religious and business leaders of our time. He posed seven questions to each of his subjects -all over 65 years of age - and their candid responses offer uniquely inspirational and often surprising insights. Thoughts from Nelson Mandela, Frank Gehry, Judi Dench, The Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Clint Eastwood, Ted Kennedy, Robert Redford, Vaclav Havel, Terence Conran, Buzz Aldrin, Lou Reed, Willie Nelson, Madeline Albright, Jane Goodall, Burt Bacharach, Andrew Wyeth, Vanessa Redgrave, Nadine Gordimer and many more reveal lifetimes of adversity and triumph, and present intimate insights into very public lives. Beautifully photographed and accompanied by a documentary DVD, "Wisdom" is above all a timeless gift and a deeply revealing portrait of the common experiences that unite generations.

Robert Redford is the only other movie director interviewed for the project, and the other actors are Alan Arkin, Billy Connolly, Judi Dench, Nick Nolte and Vanessa Redgrave as well as Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson (who are of course singer/songwriters who sometimes act).

On the eve of Clint's reportedly final acting job - in the action drama "Gran Torino" - the rich collection of shots in "Clint Eastwood: A Life in Pictures" (Chronicle, $40) compiles 50 years' worth of Eastwood behind the scenes and before the cameras.

PHOTOS: "CLINT EASTWOOD: A LIFE IN PICTURES

Starting with some goofy beefcake shots where the budding Western star's smirk speaks volumes, these images hit the big stuff (spaghetti Westerns, early directorial efforts, "Dirty Harry," the '90s renaissance) with considerably less emphasis on smaller moments (family pics, any shots of former flame Sondra Locke). There are a few holes - notably photos from sets of mid-'80s movies like "Honkytonk Man" and "Tightrope," in which Eastwood tweaked his image in an era when he hardened from Hollywood tough guy to steely icon.

But overall, what's evident in these pages is the actor-director-sometime musician's many sides: a broad grin on his prematurely grizzled face, surefootedness in step with wariness, that granite chin atop a wiry frame. Eastwood was never just a movie star, and this collection shows his evolution as an artist was right there in plain view

I picked this book up from a bookshop in Fremantle today, there's not much text, but stacks of high quality A4 photos of Clint taken throughout his life. Recommended. Clint is also on the cover of this weekends West Australian magazine with an interview as well.

While looking at right turn clyde's link, I saw this book as well--Clint Eastwood and Issues of American Masculinity by Drucilla Cornell, which just came out last month. I did see it was listed in the board's "definitive Eastwood book" thread. It sounds really interesting. I'd be curious to know what Cornell's take on his work is. So if anyone should happen to read the book, let me know.

Thanks for posting, Right Turn Clyde ... Aim for the Heart was announced last year and mentioned in the first post of the present thread, which I've merged your thread into.

Aim For The Heart book is being released in the UK earlier than September.   I have pre-ordered it on UK Amazon they are advising delivery date July 30th.  Hope that is right.  ???

I have looked up the other book on Amazon UK

The price in hardback is a bit high. £75 even expensive in paperback, however it does seem to get a good write up.

Link to Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clint-Eastwood-Issues-American-Masculinity/dp/0823230139/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244122334&sr=1-2)

I would like to read it but I think I will wait until it is a little less costly.  :)

Clint Eastwood and Issues of American Masculinity is available for $24 from U.S. Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Clint-Eastwood-Issues-American-Masculinity/dp/0823230139). You can also sample the contents there.

By the way, libraries often have books available to read for free. ;)

EDIT: Here's the table of contents, from Worldcat (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/276816771):

Quote
Introduction: Shooting Eastwood. Writing the showdown: what's left behind when the sun goes down -- Dancing with the double: reaching out from the darkness within -- Ties that bind: the legacy of a mother's love -- Psychic scars: transformative relationships and moral repair -- Parables of revenge and masculinity in Mystic river / Roger Berkowitz and Drucilla Cornell -- Militarized manhood: shattered images and the trauma of war -- Shades of recognition: privilege, dignity, and the hubris of white manhood -- Conclusion: the last take.

It doesn't seem to be widely available in libraries yet ... probably waiting for someone to catalog it.  ;)

Thanks for the above KC.   I will buy it from U.S. Amazon. Half the price of ours, even with postage.   I doubt if our local libraries would have it they are so small and have a very limited stock.  I have never been able to order a book and it has arrived at my Richmond library, they usually say it isn't available. :o    I read the first couple of pages on the Amazon site and I would like to read more.
