What do you think happened to them ?
Do you think they made it ? or do you think they drowned ??
since no one found any bodies, i think its possible that they made it to shore.
The water being very cold, and the sharks, many said that they probably died, but i still think it was possible.

You should see the "Mythbusters" episode where they go through the same procedures as Morris and the Anglin brothers went through.
It was a very interesting programme.
I personally think they made it ashore.

cool ! i didnt see that episode... im going to watch it right now O0

Of course they did!
a boat picked them up in the Bay. that is why no trace of them ever turned up.
:)

there are no sharks in the Bay. made up to scare the inmates
-
I dont think they made it. I think they drowned or died of hypothermia and their bodies were swept out to sea by the strong currents.

As a native SanFranciscan I have been obsessed with this issue practically my entire life.
I have spent countless hours in the lands near the prison and Angel island.
I have read the books and the personal recollections of the prisoners.
One day standing on Hawk hill in Marin, which overlooks Angel island and Alcatraz i had a"lightbulb" moment:
- there was no logical reason to go to Angel island because they would still have to get to the mainland. And if they did make land they would have left some trace of their visit behind. There was none. No, the only reason to navigate towards it (remember they had a raft) was as a beacon or because a boat was waiting either at the dock or, more likely , in the water between the prison and the island.
So, they either were picked up by a boat or ALL THREE DROWNED WITHOUT A TRACE!
I simply can not accept the latter explanation. Is it POSSIble? I guess so. But, knowing the history of suicides off the Golden Gate Bridge and other escape attempts it defies logic.
I talked to Don Denevi who wrote Riddle of the Rock (reissued recently as ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ) and he completely agrees with my assessment. he has also compiled a lot of info sightings et, which proves almost 100 percent the Anglin's , at least made it home.
what a story!
-
Interesting, Bruce. How would they have arranged for the boat?

read Denevi's book for that story!

Well, if I had time to read books, I wouldn't be on the Internet ... or rather, if I weren't on the Internet all day and all night, I might have time to read books! ;D

well, you can at least read the comments on Amazon
cant you?

I also "read inside" a bit on Amazon.com. Looks like a fascinating book, maybe I'll buy it and logoff for a day or so. ;)

While it's possible, I imagine they didn't make it. Unless that boat theory is true.

I remember watching the news about three years ago & there was a story on there stating a skull had been discovered, in the bay, believed to have come from one of the escaped prisoners. Having lived near San Francisco now for about ten years, & having visited Alcatraz, I am of the opinion that they never made it. There are very strong currents in the bay, plus hypothermia must have been a factor too.

Discount that one.
The girlfriend of one of the Anglin brothers confessed they made it.
Proof enough for me>

It depends on what story you actually believe as I have read that no family member of the Anglin Brothers received any contact with any sibling after their escape. Also a Norwegian ship, SS Norfjell reported seeing a body, face down in the bay wearing prison issue clothes. The bay waters range from fifty to fifty four degrees meaning that someone in the water would be affected within twenty minutes. Personal items the prisoners took with them were also found floating in the bay the day after their escape. Also found was a life preserver with a clip attached to a valve had failed, making it difficult for the swimmer to stay afloat.
All this evidence makes me think they drowned.

"They drowned." (Crushes flower.)

I’d like to believe they made it..
Below is a link to an article I came across last month. If anything it’s interesting reading but who’s to know if it is fact or fiction…

It might be true except for one important fact: the murders
never happened (sounds like a B Hollywood crime film). like the photos
lost at sea
it might simply be a ploy to make the authorities (FBI) think they died
Ask yourself: would you spend a year of your imprisonment working out an excruciatingly complex, difficult, and dangerous escape with the end game being "we'll swim out to sea and hope for the best"?

" Tale of 3 Inmates Who Vanished From Alcatraz Maintains Intrigue 50 Years Later "
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/10/us/anniversary-of-a-mystery-at-alcatraz.html
Fifty years ago, on the night of June 11, 1962, the three convicts were locked down as usual. Guards walking the tier outside their cells saw them at 9:30 and checked on them periodically all night, looking in at the sleeping faces, hearing nothing strange. But by morning, the inmates had vanished, Houdini-like.
It seemed wildly improbable. “The Rock” where Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and other infamous criminals were held was thought to be escape-proof. In its 29 years as a federal prison, from 1934 to 1963, no one is known to have made it out alive. Forty-one inmates tried. Of those, 26 were recaptured, 7 were shot dead, 3 drowned and 2 besides Mr. Morris and the Anglin brothers were never found.
Had they survived, the three men — all bank robbers serving long terms — would be in their 80s now. And while their names are all but forgotten, their breakout has been a subject of fascination to many Americans, analyzed in countless articles, four television documentaries, a 1963 book by J. Campbell Bruce, “Escape from Alcatraz,” and a 1979 movie of the same name starring Clint Eastwood as Mr. Morris.

HEY Pardners!
I would like to recommend a new book about the escape.
ESCAPING ALCATRAZ
by Michael Esslinger
Essilnger is THE man when it comes to all things Alcatraz.
This is the definitive account of the famous escape.
There is an entire chapter devoted to the motion picture. Much of the material therein is taken directly from my interview with screen writer Richard Tuggle in CINEMA RETRO. I am honored!
(see 'COLLECTIBLES' thread for more info).

Some of you have watched Alcatraz, a tv serie from 2012? I watched three episodes and stopped, I thought it boring. In the serie is suggested they all survived.

I watched that (mainly because of the Clint connection). There was an alternate reality/science fiction element (the main premise, actually). It was canceled before they could explain anything.
