I never watched it but I'm really curious now :)
Title: Re: Dexter

not everyone would like that kind of show...

Dexter is a blood specialist and a serial killer at the same time(but, he only kills bad people), there's a reason why he is like that and the more you watch the show, the more we discover things.

The show is graphic enough, its no ''Saw'' show, but its bloody, very bloody. We see when he kills peoples, but like i said, its not as graphic as in those torture movies. At one point i paused the dvd and i was like... you know, my mouth was open a bit and i wasnt moving lol, its the first show that made me have that kind of reaction since a very very Very VERY long time, i do not remember the previous time (lol) so it gives an idea.

Anyway, the more we watch it, the more we want, its ADDICTIVE. Well, for me its addictive.

Did i say it was addictive ?

have fun... discovering the world of Dexter

I think I'll like it. I bought Heroes the other day and I can barely keep my eyes open during the episodes. I'm not enjoying at all, very boring.

those kinds of series (Heroes), at first it seems good, but then after few eps its really boring because its always or the same thing, or, like on of the series, i tought it was going to be ''good'' action, but then it turned it was something about e.t's ...

Dexter is easily the best show on TV at the moment. With the current cinema trend of dumbing down for teen audiences it's refreshing to see the small screen stepping up and producing quality like this.   O0

ahh... Dexter.

I finished to watch Season 3 last week, i'll start to watch Season 4 asap.

You know you love Dexter when :

1- you own the series on dvd
2- you have a poster and want more
3- you get more interested in blood
4- you are going to buy a Dexter t-shirt
5- you dream about Dexter himself (that i did, i dreamed that i was sleeping with him, i mean, he was sleeping, and i was looking at him)
6- you think about Dexter long multiple times everyday.
7- you call all your boyfriends Dexter or Dex
8- you wish there would be Dexter cereals
9- you take screen caps of your fav Dexter commercial.
10- you make yourself a Dexter pendant

good times.

I don't think he is bad, just a very atypical man.

Yeah, but then again, it's Showtime. And by that I don't mean that other networks suck, but they don't really evolve over time. They are not as inclined to take risks as much as private networks like Showtime or HBO are.
On ABC, CBS or NBC, it's always one more cop show, one more medical show, one more sitcom. And that's it.

Looking at quality and content, Showtime always seems to be one step ahead of all of the other (public) networks.
This is what quality TV is supposed to look like, in my opinion: edgy, bold, daring, original, off-the-beaten-path types of shows like Californication, The United States of Tara, The Tudors, The L Word, This American Life, Weeds, Nurse Jackie...

Their slogan says it all, even though it might sound a bit pretentious to some: TV. At its Best.  O0

I'm at season 4 of Dexter right now  O0
One of the main reasons why I like the show is that it is extremely well filmed, and also very dark both in terms of content and visually (something that I really really like). And of course like you mentioned above ladies, Michael C. Hall is a very handsome devil, which doesn't hurt  >:D ;)

Aline, where are you at in the series ??  :)

I got the three firsts seasons on dvd. Season three was worth just for the cover, it's the best cover in my opinion, glossy and the close up worked nice

but it's my least favorite season in terms of plot. Miguel Prado was boring.

I'm getting to download the 4th season from a website and I'm loving it. Yesterday I watched the "Dirty Harry" episode. I liked the previous one too where he got the female cop who killed her family.

Don't know if you agree, but I liked they cast Keith Carradine for a role in season 2 and again in season 4. He is very handsome in his sixties. Unfortunately we know what happens to his character :(

Season four is the last one? I'll miss the show :(
Title: Re: Dexter
Post by: dane with no name on November 18, 2009, 12:02:27 PM
Season 1 and 2 is great, but I felt that season 3 was a bit dull.
Maybe it was because Doakes wasn't around anymore, and Prado wasn't as much in control of his plans and actions as the previous ones. Lithgow is brilliant as Trinity though  >:D

When I watch Dexter, it's usually with a few of my friends, where we sit down and watch 3-4 episodes in a row.
I think it's the dark humor, combined with a whole slew of interesting supporting characters (not counting Masuka in the interesting department though  ::) ) the fascination about serial killers, and great acting that has made this show what it is today.

I've half considered grabbing the books from time to time, but I really don't want to spoil the joy of watching the tv series by knowing how it might all end...
I don't know if Season 4 is going to be the last one. As far as I know there are only 3 dexter books, and season 4 was written along with Jeff Lindsay, so I reckon that if the fourth season ends on a high note, anything is possible...

When he came into the bathroom and we saw Harrison in that pool of blood, gave me shivers. I thought he would be catched and arrested and don't remember where I read something about Astor being killed...I was expecting everything but that. I never was a Rita fan but I really felt sorry for her.
Very disturbing ending.

She was always too whiner. After they married they hadn't a single night alone together, their relationship was too bland, with no passion. I always thought the right woman for him should be someone like Lila >:D

we cannot blame Rita's attitude, first she had a tragic past, second, Dexter wasnt there most of the time, and he was always hiding things from her(thats normal because of Dex's other side, so it normal that most of the times it couldnt work at 100%), so her attitude and reactions were normal.

my opinion is that Rita was the best thing for Dexter, even he realised it.

And, John Lithgow creeps me out more than anything else that's happened in Dexter in the last three seasons.

John Lithgow is a very talented actor, and I think it's his eyes in particular that does it.
When he's not acting all warm, chummy and "elderly citizen-like" his eyes just turns completely cold and almost reptilian. Even with the apparent dead look in them, you can see he is thinking and working things out....

Despite Lila being able to "see" him, she (or any woman like him) would probably have appealed to the worst in him.
Rita, with her ordinary lifestyle had slowly begun to rell him into a more ordinary life, a life where Dexter's dark side had to be even more checked.
You could see that when she came and picked him up after he was arrested, where he felt ashamed of what he had done, and was afraid to look in her eyes. I doubt he would have felt the same thing back in episode 1.
Rita might have seemed bland, but she knew when to make a stand. The second she thought that Dexter was a drug addict back in episode 2 she completely changed character, stepped up and forced him to go into rehab, but she also immediately confessed when the neighbour had tried to seduce her because she more than anything felt that the trust between her and Dexter had been broken.
In conclusion Rita was a ordinary woman who had managed to find a strenght and determination within herself during her secure relationship with Dexter, and whenever that strenght and determination was called for, she brought it to bear.

Dane and Lena, remember I never said Rita isn't a good person, the thing is she was TOO good.

And it's so ironic that her so fine and good natured attitudes made her always fall for bad/doubtful men.

Despite Lila being able to "see" him, she (or any woman like him) would probably have appealed to the worst in him.

Not necessarily. Dexter was a wild guy and he could find a someone who matched with him without bringing his dark side out. Before Lila started giving clear signs of being messed up, remember that night when they went out to dinner and she made up all that story about they being married? He was having fun and totally fascinated with her. I never saw that chemistry in any of the thousands moments he shared with Rita.

In conclusion Rita was a ordinary woman who had managed to find a strenght and determination within herself during her secure relationship with Dexter, and whenever that strenght and determination was called for, she brought it to bear

It wasn't a so secure relationship. She married a man she didn't know at all, they even had to seek therapy which he missed the most of the sessions and she kept accepting the most strange attitudes of him.

This discussion could go forever but obviously you both are Rita lovers so I'll stop my comments for now ;)

I can certainly agree that her attitude made her fall for the wrong men.

There certainly was a mad chemistry between them to begin with. Dexter had never had any "real" experience with women, seeing as he started out with using Rita as a cover to begin with, and only through her began to have more than a platonic interest with the opposite sex.
I think one of the reasons he got so attracted to Lila to begin with was because she was the wild girl, and she seemed to offer him much more than what he had experienced with Rita, besides her ability to "see" him.

This whole character discussion might not be a bad idea.
Seeing as we won't know if/when season 5 gets out, we could spend the time discussing the different characters, starting from season 1.
Dexter certainly have a lot of fleshed out supporting characters we could delve into  :)

Aline, i do not agree with you, but know that i respect your opinion  ;)

I do not believe that Rita was too good, she just was herself and i believe she was alright.

women falls far all kinds of men for so many reasons, some ppls say that women seeks theyre father in men, i didnt really made my mind about this, but i think that this fact could be possible.

About Lila, i agree with dane that to have stayed with her would have made him worse, ppls that already have problems like the kind of problems Lila had would have affected him more and more with time.

I believe that Dexter liked Lila mostly because he tought that she could *see* him(for him it was a relief), while she really didnt, and the sex is something else, if Dexter wouldnt have slowly become closer to Rita, the situation would have been different.

About the marriage, Rita knew Dexter, she knew a side a him like everyone knows there partners, we do not know them at 100% and never will, so yes she knew him, to say that she didnt know him at all doesnt make sense to me.

You said that she accepted his strange behaviors ? she loved him, and like for many many ppls, they tried to work things out with compromises, also like that often, chances are given and sometimes it works, and other times it doesnt.

Dexter also really loved Rita, we were able to really see it more and more as the serie got closer to its end. He kept realising more and more how she and the kids were important to him, that he really loved them, that he really wanted this, and thats not something that ever could have happened between him and Lila.

youre right Aline, this conversation could go on forever lol, but knowing that we respect each others opinion is great so  O0 :)

If Dexter had run away with Lila (as he deluded her saying he would), he would be living happily ever after. Now he has a little baby who saw his mother die in front of him and two more "adopted" ones who may blame him for their mother's death :P
Title: Re: Dexter

hindsight is always 20/20 i suppose, but I think that if Dexter had hooked up with Lila instead, who is to say that it wouldn't have been her who had been carved up in the bathtub instead? Trinity clearly went for rita as revenge for dexters deeds, so it would seem a good guess that she would have ended up at the wrong end of the knife instead.
I can agree on all the consequences that you mentioned, except for the blaming of the stepkids part. There is no overtly connection between trinity and dexter, so i doubt that the kids would bame him. In fact, Rita fits the profile of the second victim in the trinity killings perfectly ( a mother) and the method with which she was killed ( the bathtub stabbing) might lead the FBI to the conclusion that this killing was a combination of the two killings because his actual first murder (the boy) and his exposure by Miami homicide left him with little time to spare to begin the cycle anew.
Dexter would certainly have a whole department of police officers who could wouch for him, so i doubt that the kids would ever have a reason to blame him.

If Dexter would have stayed with Lila, it would have been real crazy...

there's no way Dexter would have stayed with her, she really was crazy, do you remember what she did to her ex ??

Yes, the kids wouldn't blame him but he will suffer the rest of his life beacuse he knows, indirectly, her death was his fault. Sooner or later, Rita and the kids would be target of his lifestyle (remember that female cop, Zoey, that went after him in his own house after he uncovered her secret?)

The main reason I don't like Rita is upset me seeing Dexter trapped in a boring relationship, with a woman that he not even loved. Yes, I never thought he loved her. He used her. He had to marry someone, he needed become "a family man", he knew that was important to keep him out of suspicions, just as Trinity did.

Rita was the one "handy" and as himself explained in the beginning of the series, as messed up as him. I am reading the book and at some point he says to himself "I like those kids more than I like Rita".

Of course as time passed, he developed feelings for her but was still a untrustful and lame relationship.

again i do not agree, Dexter loved Rita, yes her situation was handy, but first, he loved her for who she was and so he really cared for her, and he loved her more and more and that without fully realising it, i think this is where you mix things up, Dexter evolves slowly.

Also, theyre relation wasnt lame, Dexter didnt find it lame, Rita was respecting him the way he was, and he was respecting her.

yes they married fast, and he realised that he married her because he really loved her, he became a husband and he trully was happy about all this, he realised that he evolved with Rita and that was the best thing that could have happened to him.

In the end of the serie, he also said that he didnt want this dark passenger side of him anymore, and that he really wanted to be with them, his family.

im out  :D ;)

Is that really true? If it is, it's great but I've heard Michael has been casted to another project ???

I'll agree that Dexter's and Rita's relationship wasn't exactly material for the next Jerry Bruckheimer movie  ;) but an adventurous relationship was never Dexter's intention.
Dexter never had any real relationship with the other sex up until Rita, so I think it never dawned on him that a relationship with a wild girl like Lila was an option up until the time where he met her.
But in the end it was his own choice to return to Rita, rather than go out and find another wild girl who wasn't as messed up as Lila was, so in the end I think he wanted a quiet life, not only because it would give him time to focus on his dark side, but also because the wild free side he found in himself while seeing Lila (or any other less messed up girl like her) couldn't properly co-exist with his dark passenger.

While this topic could go on for a long time (sounds like no one is about to budge) how about another discussion?

How do you feel that Dexter's sister has evolved? I found her slightly annoying in the first season, and to be little more than a cussing damsel in distress, but as the series progressed  she has really managed to come out on her own, and is now by far my second favorite character in Dexter.

Good news on the rumor about the fifth season of Dexter. Rumors seem to be rife about it, (but I have yet to see some definete proof)
One can still dream, I suppose  8)

AB and Walt are Dexter fans but they aren't into the discussion much :(

I always liked Debra especially after season 2. Her romance with Lundy added more depth to her character and gave Jennifer more chance to show her talent. Specially the scenes when she got emotional are impressive...in the last episode, the way her voice breaks saying to Dexter how much she loves him and that he is the only thing she has in her life, was moving.
Although her "foul mouth", she is a very sweet person and you can see how much she cares about her "brother" and his family :)

That was one hell of a surprise :o

I didn't know that Hall and Carpenter were married ;)

(on a more serious note, it's good to hear that the cancer was found in time and that the treatment is working. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery)
