Title: Movie Night - Kelly's Heroes. Sunday, September 18, 2011.
Post by: The Schofield Kid on September 11, 2011, 04:46:06 PM
This is the Movie Night discussion thread for Kelly's Heroes. We'll meet here up to an hour before we start rolling the film on Sunday, September 18, 2011. (or in Australia, Monday, September 19.)
If possible, please check in at least ten minutes before the start time, so we'll know everyone is here who wanted to be. For anyone who'd like to join us ... have your Kelly's Heroes DVD (or video) ready to play. We'll start the film at 20:00 UTC, Board Time.
Check here to see what time we'll be starting in your area:

In CST (U.S. Central Time Zone) states - 3:00 PM
In EST (U.S. East Coast) states - 4:00 PM
In Sao Paulo, Brasil - 5:00 PM
In Great Britain, Portugal - 9:00 PM
In France, Italy - 10:00 PM
      In Sweden - 10:00PM
      In Finland -  11:00PM
In Sydney and Melbourne, Australia - 6:00 AM, Monday morning.

If you need more time conversions, check here:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

We'll be starting at the MGM Logo. This is at 0:00:09 on the R-4 DVD. It is after Leo the Lion's second roar.  Set up your DVD here, and pause. We'll all be hitting "Start" at exactly the top of the hour.

We'll be taking three breaks during the movie. (Usually around 10 minutes)

The first break is at the start of Chapter 9 on the R-4 DVD. This is at 0:31:19. It is after the scene where Oddball first appears and is talking with Crapgame and Kelly.
Oddball says, " A Sherman can give you a very nice edge". Kelly says, "Where are these Sherman's?", Oddball replies, "Outside, Come on. I'll show them to you".

The second break will be at the start of Chapter 18 on the R-4 DVD. This is at 01:06:59. It is after the scene where Oddball is on the phone with Bellamy asking for
60 feet of bridge. Bellamy says, "I need support units, Oddball. Where am I going to find 100 guys just like that".

The final break is at the start of Chapter 27 on the R-4 DVD. This is at 01:45:04. It is after the scene where the sniper is in the clock tower is looking down on the
German guards through his rifle scope.

All screencaps taken from the Kelly's Heroes DVD.

I hope to see as many members here as possible.

(I'm starting this thread early so I could add the event to the calendar--all events must have a thread to link to.)

Just a couple of reminders:

1) By default, this board gives you a warning message when someone else has posted while you're writing a post. That can get very frustrating in the heat of things in these threads ... but now the feature can be turned off, temporarily (or permanently if you prefer).

To turn it off, click the link on the brown bar near the top of the page to your profile: (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/Themes/WesternMocha/images/english/profile.gif)

You'll go to your profile page. On the left-hand side, there's a list of stuff you can do here including "Modify profile." Under that heading, click the link to "Look and Layout Preferences." Now you'll see some choices with little white checkboxes next to them. One of them is "Don't warn on new replies made while posting." Click in that box so there's a check mark there. Then, in the lower right hand corner, click "Change profile" and you're all set.

I find it also helps to use the keyboard shortcut when posting: alt+s. (Or in the latest version of Firefox, alt+shift+s.)

2) You can also use the "Quick Reply" feature: At the bottom of each thread is a brown bar with "Quick Reply" on the left hand corner. If you don't have it enabled, that's all you'll see and there will be a plus sign to the left of "Quick Reply." Click the plus sign, and a reply box will open beneath the brown bar and will stay there until you click the sign (now a minus) next to "Quick Reply" again. You can type your post right in this box and don't have to wait for a "Reply" page to open. It's a little harder to use smilies, though, unless you remember all the shortcuts!

That's a shame 2M, but don't worry because since it looks like Lin won't be able to make it either tomorrow, we're going to have an encore screening of Kelly's Heroes on Sunday October 9, 2011.

So anyone who misses out tomorrow, won't have to wait too long to see this great film again. 8)

I think this film would give Where Eagles Dare a run for it's money in the bodycount stakes?

That's the OTHER time in an Eastwood movie where someone says "cockamamie"!

That's one of the unrealities of this film.  When the fighting is going on, all the civilians are out of sight, but afterward there were certainly a large number of them that seemed to come out of the woodwork.

Back in the scene where they were set afoot by friendly fire.

This scene would be more probable if the German were a regular Wehrmacht guy, not SS.

That's a good question actually. I wonder how reliable civilian postal services were during WWI and II?

Thanks everyone. I think the length is one of the reasons I don't watch it as much as other Eastwood films but I always enjoy it.

For our friends that missed out tonight, as I said there will be an encore screening on October 9.

Thank You. :)

Quote
At the start of 1914 the General Post Office was one of the largest employers in the world, with a workforce of more than a quarter of a million, but the Great War had a significant impact on the service. Many postal workers left to serve on the front, either as fighting men or as part of army postal and telegraph services. With its workforce massively depleted, the Post Office reduced services at home and employed women in large numbers for the first time. The Post Office also participated in a massive censorship operation and was involved in the mass distribution of items such as army recruitment forms, ration books and advertising material for war bonds.

SK, Thank you and I look forward to the encore screening of Kelly's Heroes on Sunday October 9, 2011. :)
