This is the Movie Night discussion thread for Every Which Way but Loose. We'll meet here up to an hour before we start rolling the film. For anyone who'd like to join us... have your Every Which Way but Loose DVD ready to play on Sunday, April 28. We'll start the film at 20:00 UTC, Board Time.
Check here to see what time we'll be starting the film in your area:
U.S. West Coast (PDT) - 1:00 PM
Mid-U.S. (CDT) - 3:00 PM
U.S. East Coast (EDT) - 4:00 PM
Great Britain, Portugal (BST, WEST) - 9:00 PM
France, Italy (CEST) - 10:00 PM
Finland (EEST) - 11:00 PM
New South Wales, Australia 6:00 AM (EST) Monday, April 29
If anyone needs to check any other time zones, this is the converter I used:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html
We'll be starting the movie at the first frame where you can see "Warner Bros. Pictures", "A Time Warner Entertainment Company":
On the R-1 DVD, this is at 0:00:03 on the counter. Set up your movie here, and pause. We'll all be hitting "Start" at exactly the top of the hour.
We'll be taking three short breaks during the film (around ten minutes each). The first break is at the beginning of Chapter 9, this great closeup of Orville (28:03 on the R-1 DVD):
This is just after the scene with Philo and Lynn in the car, ending with "Right now we're gonna meet my friend Orville, he's waitin' on us."
The second break is at the beginning of Chapter 17, with Ma Boggs on the porch. On the R-1 DVD, this is at 56:55:
This is right after the nighttime scene in which Echo meets Clyde.
The third break is about halfway through Chapter 24. On the R1 DVD this is at 1:25:17:
Pause on the closeup of the rattlesnake, in the scene where the two cops are stalking Philo as he fishes.
All screencaps taken from the Every Which Way but Loose DVD.
I hope to see as many members here as possible.
(I'm starting this thread early so I could add the event to the calendar--all events must have a thread to link to.)

A reminder about how to turn of the "warning" message that someone else has posted while you were typing... Let me quote a post of mine from an earlier Movie Night thread (slightly edited since the last Board updates):
I wanted to mention one thing that should help make this thread more fun for everyone. By default, this board gives you a warning message when someone else has posted while you're writing a post. That can get very frustrating in the heat of things in these threads ... but now the feature can be turned off, temporarily (or permanently if you prefer).
To turn it off, click the link on the brown bar near the top of the page to your profile: (http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/Themes/WesternMocha/images/english/profile.gif)
You'll go to your profile page. On the left-hand side, there's a link to "Modify profile." Under that heading, click the link to "Look and Layout." Now you'll see some choices with little white checkboxes next to them. One of them is "Don't warn on new replies made while posting." Click in that box so there's a check mark there. Then, in the lower right hand corner, click "Change profile" and you're all set.
I find it also helps to use the keyboard shortcut when posting: alt+s. (Or in the latest version of Firefox, alt+shift+s.)
Another useful thing to do before the Movie Night starts is to turn on Quick Reply if you don't have it on already. In brief, on the "Look and Layout" section of your Profile page, make sure that next to the line "Use quick reply on topic display" it says "Show, on by default." Then you'll be able to type your post right in the "quick reply" box at the bottom of the thread, and you won't have to wait for a "Reply" page to open.

Good luck with the movie night tonight guys. I do hope that everyone who said they'd participate does & we can get this back on a regular basis.

I love those old trucks.

Unless you're taking them to your tree!
-
Good Robert De Niro impression "you talking to me?"
-
We should show this on a double feature with Million Dollar Baby!
-
I love the first-person viewpoint they use a lot when he's having a fight.

He is so good in a number of Eastwood movies.

Hi Elizabeth77 :)
Sorry the board is still running slow for me when I am posting! >:(
Hi TWOMULES. :)
At least the board is running, even if it is slow.

Clint with his kit off :smitten: :smitten:
-
Clint looks super cool in just jeans and a white t-shirt O0
He looks even better without the t-shirt! ;)
-
I've always wondered whether there really was ... is? ... a bare-knuckled boxing subculture like this.
-
He didn't last too long!
-
works for me as well.. :smitten:
-
He is so good in a number of Eastwood movies.
I first encountered Geoffrey Lewis in High Plains Drifter and found him rather frightening. I was delighted to find him in such a contrasting role in this film.
-
I've always wondered whether there really was ... is? ... a bare-knuckled boxing subculture like this.
I've wondered that too, Charles Bronson starred in a movie about bare knuckle fighting too.
-
The fight scenes in this film are very well choreographed. :)
The Palomino, I would love to go there for a beer. :D
-
I can imagine Clint doing the teeth gag in real life O0
-
I've always wondered why Mel Tillis puts that huge pause between "Halsey" and "Taylor." ???
-
The fight scenes in this film are very well choreographed. :)
The Palomino, I would love to go there for a beer. :D
Yeah that would be cool...Clint was interviewed by Barbara Walters in 1980 at The Palomino
-
I've always wondered why Mel Tillis puts that huge pause between "Halsey" and "Taylor." ???
New girl? Couldn't remember her name?
-
Oh, he did it again! ;D
-
I've always wondered why Mel Tillis puts that huge pause between "Halsey" and "Taylor." ???
I think I read that he had a stutter.
-
Don't do it Clint, she's no good for you!
-
Don't do it Clint, she's no good for you!
So true. >:D
-
I've always wondered why Mel Tillis puts that huge pause between "Halsey" and "Taylor." ???
KC, Mel's stutter developed during his childhood, if you watch Cannonball Run you will see he talks like this.
-
I think I read that he had a stutter.
That might explain it. And it didn't bother him when he sang, like with a lot of people who stutter.
-
Slightly advanced!
-

Thanks, TwoMules. I actually only know him from this film ... not much of a country music fan, I'm afraid! :-[

The beginning of the feud >:D

I wonder how much influence Clint had in the directing. James Fargo directed it but I'm sure Clint helped!

There seems to be a 'look' of a Clint directed movie even though he isn't officially directing. ;)

This film still ranks as one of the most profitable for Clint. I read once it was second only to Superman the year of release.

Orville always turns his cap backward when he thinks there's going to be a fight :)
So he gets a better look. ;)
-
I wonder how much influence Clint had in the directing. James Fargo directed it but I'm sure Clint helped!
I agree, JSE. It's done in the same style. :)
This is a superb Clint Movie. I really can't understand why this film is often underated and you get some people on websites saying "It was a career low for Clint" The goddamn baboons. >:( :D
-
How many Eastwood films can you think of featuring "pie"?
-
Million Dollar Baby is one
-
It's kind of funny to listen to Ma complain about Clyde when he's hanging out the wash for her.
-
Million Dollar Baby is one
That's right ... and at least one more.
-
I can't think of it...Bridges perhaps?
-
I can't think of it...Bridges perhaps?
Can't recall it in Bridges. But there's pie in one of the Westerns.
-
Both Superman and Clyde holding trucks up by sheer strength in the same year!
-
I love Ruth Gordon as Ma. ;D I can remember seeing her in a comedy film on TV many years ago called The Big Bus. :)
-
I love Ruth Gordon as Ma. ;D I can remember seeing her in a comedy film on TV many years ago called The Big Bus. :)
Did she play a similar character?
-
Hank Worden is wonderful in the tiny part of trailer court manager.
-
They are the cops! ;D
-
Hank Worden is wonderful in the tiny part of trailer court manager.
Love how he puts his teeth in before speaking.

Hank Worden is wonderful in the tiny part of trailer court manager.
I really like him. ;D
-
I love Ruth Gordon as Ma. ;D I can remember seeing her in a comedy film on TV many years ago called The Big Bus. :)
Ruth Gordon was 82 when this was made ... the same age Clint is now! ;)
-
Both Superman and Clyde holding trucks up by sheer strength in the same year!
;D ;D
-
Love this scene at the pit stop.
-
Gregory Walcott is good as the cop in this and suitably annoying in The Eiger Sanction :)
-
It's Mrs Griswold O0
-
Beautiful cantaloupes! ;D
-
Love this scene at the pit stop.
;D ;D ;D
I like Echo. I don't think I'd enjoy this film as much without her.
-
Gregory Walcott is good as the cop in this and suitably annoying in The Eiger Sanction :)
There are a lot of Clint's "ensemble" players in this movie ... all great in their roles.
-
It's fun to see Clint smile! :D
-
Did she play a similar character?
Yes, JSE :)
-
"You want to talk, take a walk. You want to eat, take a seat!"
-
So KC, which western has pie? I thought about it and didn't remember even though I've seen them many times each..
-
It's fun to see Clint smile! :D
It isn't often that his characters really smile like that. :)
-
It isn't often that his character really smiles like that. :)
But when he does, it's worth the wait. :)
-
who plays the role of the leader of black widows?
-
"Morphadites"? ???
-
Gregory Walcott is good as the cop in this and suitably annoying in The Eiger Sanction :)
I agree, he was also annoying in Joe Kidd
-
who plays the role of the leader of black widows?
Cholla? John Quade.
-
Cholla? John Quade.
He reminds me very slightly of Gene Hackman (sorry Gene!)
-
So KC, which western has pie? I thought about it and didn't remember even though I've seen them many times each..
Did Clint say "Reach for the Pies" ?? :D
-
So KC, which western has pie? I thought about it and didn't remember even though I've seen them many times each..
High Plains Drifter ... it's served for breakfast at the Beldings' hotel.

Pause!
Resume at twenty past the hour. :)
-
Little defenseless old lady to come back to. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Pause!
That was quick. It took me by surprise.

Pause, Lin!
Sorry I forgot to give a warning when it was coming up.

Yeah, sorry about that. I'll try to give a "two minutes warning" next time!
-
Pause!
-
High Plains Drifter ... it's served for breakfast at the Belding's hotel.
Ah so that's it. I'm saving watching High Plains again until the Blu-ray comes out later this year...it's hard to wait - I wanna see those pies in HD.
-
Yes it was quick and I was so 'lost' in the movie. I love the scene when we resume!
-
Ah so that's it. I'm saving watching High Plains again until the Blu-ray comes out later this year...it's hard to wait - I wanna see those pies in HD.
I think there's only one "slab of pie." The Stranger doesn't want it, so the fat sheriff helps himself to it. "You won't be wanting that slab of pie?"
-
Yes it was quick and I was so 'lost' in the movie. I love the scene when we resume!
I don't think I picked these "pause" shots very well. These are the ones from the first time we did this movie, back in 2007. Probably better to pause on the end of one scene rather than the start of a new one.
-
I think there's only one "slab of pie." The Stranger doesn't want it, so the fat sheriff helps himself to it. "You won't be wanting that slab of pie?"
So that's how Tank Murdock got so big? :D

So that's how Tank Murdock got so big? :D
I'd forgotten Walter Barnes was in this movie, too! :D

Haha! I agree, bring back SK :D Only Joking, KC. :)
-
I'll mention the next (and last) pause up front this time ...
The third break is about halfway through Chapter 24. On the R1 DVD this is at 1:25:17:

Pause on the closeup of the rattlesnake, in the scene where the two cops are stalking Philo as he fishes.

They're clapping because she's finished singing...
-
I like this Charlie Rich song...his Behind Closed Doors album is really good :)

It's funny that he takes Clyde to all those bars and nobody seems to object to seeing an orangutan in the place! ;D
-
They're clapping because she's finished singing...

I wish they'd kept "Echo" for the second film.

This banter about crime numbers is like something out of one of the Naked Gun films!

I wish they'd kept "Echo" for the second film.
She certainly would have been a good addition.

Lynne HT nearly has a pair of shorts on. ;D

I love the way Orville collects up the bike while Philo beats everyone up.
-
Are those guys coming after me? :o ;D
-
The Zanza Bar!
-
"Perfide Manon!" ... as the guy says in a French book I read a long time ago ...
-
This movie has the same kind of charm as the Smokey and the Bandit films, even the soundtrack is by Snuff Garrett. I also have Smokey and The Bandit 2 on vinyl. :)
-
"Cause up to now, I'm the only one dumb enough to want to take you further than your bed" I love this quote.

Probably Sondra Locke's favorite moment of all the scenes she's played with Clint.

"I ain't gonna be hitting you with my face" ;D
I love that line.

Nice to see Richard joing the party!

Philo could have beaten Tank Murdock just like Bronco Billy could have taken Sheriff Dix. :o Some guys have all the luck. :D Don't you Walter Barnes!! ;)
-
Nice to see Richard joing the party!
Yes. Welcome Richard. :)

Nice to see Richard joing the party!

Well it was nice to see this one, hadn't seen it in a long time..
-
Thanks everyone, I enjoyed that O0
-
It ends on a big laugh! :)
That makes up for some of Clint's films where I want to cry at the end. This is one I come back to more often than the others.
-
Looking forward to our next one already!
