It?s always difficult to know that an ?old mate? left us. Although I am not a regular here anymore, I drop by once in a while and see how everyone is going/writing and I consider you all my ?old mates?. I am in tears.

As long as I live, Kathie will live in my memory as someone good that crossed my path and I am thankful that we crossed paths.

Rest in Peace, Kathie.

I never cared much about the band but for some reason youtube was on autoplay a few weeks ago and the album started to play... thank you youtube. It's an amazing record, hard to pick up a favourite song as I enjoy the entire record. It feels like a record that I played over and over and over... and it just gets better and better.

Xichado! How wonderful to hear from you! How have you been, old friend?

I am good-ish! The last few weeks I have been feeling a bit low as I am missing everything and everyone, I can't complaint much as I am in good health but since the majority of my work involves assisting patients in hospitals and clinics I decided to avoid any sort of social gatherings/meetings. I am planning to spend the winter time in Portugal with my parents as I need/feel the need to spend time with my family.

Otherwise, all good.

From the top of my head:

- Paul Fejos' Lonesome (1928), the basic boy meets girl and they fall in love, but it's simple, silly, naive, beautiful. And it was done in a time when they were experimenting with sound and colour (stencils) and both the sound (dialogue, sound, and song) and colour are so minimal and only appear when really necessary. It just melt my heart and I felt in love with this movie.

- and anything by Josef von Sternberg, specially the Criterion Collection's 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg. Amazing movies, superb cinematography (I believe the best I have ever seen in silent era films).


- Metropolis has been mentioned but I would advise you to see the 2010 restored version as it is the most complete version. Before this restored version I never enjoyed the movie, I thought it was a boring mess and I couldn't understand what the "buzz" was all about Metropolis... and then I saw the restored version and my jaw dropped.

Xichado: What Eastwood film do you think should get a remake?

My first thought was "The Rookie" but then I remembered how much I disliked "Trouble With The Curve" and I never "connected" with the narrative of "J. Edgar", "Jersey Boys" and "American Snipper".

So, leave "The Rookie" as is, "Trouble With The Curve" no one can remake it without writing a completely different (and above all, original) story, "J. Edgar" and "American Snipper" there is no need for a remake(s), but they are just not my cup of tea.

I saw "Jersey Boys" twice on stage. I loved it the first time around, loved it the second time around and I was anxiously waiting for the film --and it was directed by Clint (jumping up and down with joy). I feel the film failed to recapture the magic and the times of the "boys" and I left the cinema thinking the "boys" deserved better. I think "Jersey Boys" narrative felt flat within the first 30 minutes and it remained flat until the end: the songs were the best part of it but the narrative is very "downbeat" and uninteresting and, from my spectator point of view, I couldn't care less about the "boys" and whatever happened in their lives. Yeap, the "boys" deserved better and I do hope someone decides to remake it and bring their story and songs -which belong in the great american songbook- into a "bright light" (still can't figure out why the cinematography was so "gloomy").

Yes, "Jersey Boys" needs to (and it should) get a remake.

I prefer the "sad" version mainly because that was the first version I ever heard... from the Outcesticide cd. I have good memories trying to find the Outcesticide in flea markets and dodgy music stores in Lisbon. A friend and I spent countless hours, and days, running around Lisbon trying to find it and when we finally found it, it was magical. I believe this version now appears in the "Kurt Cobain Montage of Heck" cd.

I prefer it because it is a low key demo, with a certain degree of intimacy, almost as a if a sad secret is being revealed. Sometimes, I also think of it as a prayer.

It was "somehow" released in 1993, as an hidden track in the "No Alternative" compilation (here) with the title "Verse Chorus Verse". I love this version as help.

And I love to see the evolution of the lyrics. Brett Morgen said there must have been, at least, fifteen different versions of "Sappy" but Kurt was never completely satisfied with any of them. And, to me, that's sappy: sad because we never got to see a "final version" and happy because we have so many "not final" versions to pick from.

Matt, I never thought about an exhibit, I always feel I am under-qualified... and I see amazing photographers with amazing photos and techniques WAY BETTER than mine. I am just trying to capture a (simple) moment and I don't have much of a technique or photographic know-how.

Yes. I have been in London for awhile now. Finished my BSc Film & TV Production course last June and doing a few bits and bobs in tv (and also as a tv and film extra )

I was watching a documentary a couple of weeks ago, and they were talking to some of the other bands from just before Nirvana got their record deal and released Nevermind. They all agreed that they thought someone would break out of the local scene, but never in a million years did they think it would be Nirvana. They all seemed to not think much of that band in comparison to the others in the area.

I always thought of it as "come as you are because I am defenceless and I won't put you down" or "just be yourself and I'll accept it without firing 1000 reasons at you for being the way you are and ask you to change".

Same thing with "you know you're right", I read it as "yeap, there are a bunch of things going around, some are right, some are wrong, some are strange, some are just part of life, you are right in pointing things out to me, I know the consequences of my actions... YET I have go down this path... BUT you are right, and I still have to go my own way". Which lead to the pain and confusion Kurt was feeling in the end, because he didn't have a gun, he didn't have a way (or knew of a way) to fight back.

Lithium

Lithium was the song that drove me to Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit really didn't "attracted" me that much, in the beginning.

Lithium is IT. The lyrics were (and still are) just raw emotions and random thoughts that make (and still make) perfect sense, to me at least . The complexity of reality mixed with naïve and enlightened, yet sarcastic and disillusioned, emotions coming together in a song... WOW.

WOW then, WOW now. WOW forever.
