Off-Topic Discussion / FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2018
« on: June 18, 2018, 10:52:57 PM »
Here we go... The World Cup kicked off a few days ago with some already surprising results..

But England began their campaign in style last night with a 2-1 win over Tunisia... Despite not being awarded an
Obvious penalty and having a soft one given against us.. England got stuck in against a niggly team hell bent on getting a draw and through perseverance and great team spirit came out the deserved winners..

And well done Mexico for their 1-0 victory over Germany and also Switzerland for holding one of the competition favourites Brazil to a 1-1 draw..

General Discussion / 3 films to recommend Clint to new viewers
« on: April 24, 2018, 11:39:29 PM »
If you were going to recommend and show 3 films of Clint's (as actor) to a new viewer who hadn't seen any of his work before,  which three would you choose.. ?

This is quite conceivable as he hasn't really acted much in recent years and a lot of new cinema goers have sprung up.
Watching Fistful of Dollars with an audience recently I was aware how many younger viewers there were who were probably seeing the film for the first time.... How cool is that..

I'd want to give them an idea of the breadth of his career...

I'm going with

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Dirty Harry

Kills me to leave out Josey and maybe Million Dollar Baby, I'd def put them in the next batch...

Eastwood News / Eastwood on the Southbank
« on: April 18, 2018, 08:17:49 AM »

Calling all Londoners... Clint is back on London's Southbank, tho not in person this time unfortunately..

A Fistfull of Dollars is now showing at the B.F.I on the Southbank.. I'm going next week, can't wait to see (and hear) this on the big screen.
The British Film Institute is a great cinema complex housed in one of my favourite Brutalist buildings on the Thames..

Lovely bar too.. just like a proper cinema.. I'll take a dry martini with my movies over a bucket of popcorn and litre of  liquefied sugar any day ;)

Which five singers have had the most impact on you during your lives...
It'd be great to see who you'd all choose and why..

I'll kick off with

Nina Simone
John Lennon
James Brown
Aretha Franklin
David Bowie

Eastwood News / Eastwood painting
« on: March 12, 2017, 03:32:36 PM »

Not too sure where to post this or how to link to original story so help appreciated..

The painting is by well known Irish artist Basil Blackshaw who passed away last year at the age of 83.
There's to be an auction of his work and this piece was discovered in a stable on his property and will go on sale for the very first time

I kinda like it..

I guess this belongs in news ?

Collectors' Corner / Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Off-Topic Discussion / C.G.I Peter Cushing
« on: December 21, 2016, 03:09:08 PM »
Now I'm no fan of the Star Wars franchise, I guess I was just a little too old when they first appeared.. I think I've seen about half an hour of the first one, not sure, don't really remember..

But....I'm hearing and reading all kinds of reports that in the latest instalment.. rogue something.. There's a complete CGI performance by the late great actor Peter Cushing. People who've seen the film tell me it's quite amazing... If so, and it's truly successful, then what does that mean for the future  ?

Can all our favourite and sadly departed movie stars live again on the big screen... ? Or could we someday see a Young Clint back on screen with James Cagney or Steve McQueen... ?

I'm not sure how this works ethically.... But it sure is an interesting idea..

Off-Topic Discussion / The Thing
« on: October 12, 2016, 10:59:25 PM »
Amazing to think it's been 30 years since John Carpenters The Thing was released..
And amazing to think I enjoyed this film in a virtually deserted cinema in London's West End as audiences
stayed away from this excellent movie ...

Off-Topic Discussion / Movie question

General Discussion / Clints baddest baddie ?
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:24:12 AM »
Watching the film Seven Days in May recently I was impressed with Burt Lancaster playing an out and out baddie in the movie..
I know Clints characters are usually heroic in some way.. but which character of Clints is closest the badest guy..?

Is it Munny.. a killer of women and children ? I think maybe so..

Hemlock isnt particuarly heroic either in that he kills out of greed for money to finance his art collection..

Frank Morris.. An armed robber.. ?

Off-Topic Discussion / Kirk Douglas autograph

Off-Topic Discussion / Your Cinema
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:29:37 PM »
Last night I happened upon a cinema I hadn't visited before.. The Phoenix in North London and what a delight it was..

I saw Wakolda.. an excellent film.. but beforehand enjoyed a light meal and two glasses of a rather fine house red on a balcony overlooking that part of town... This is what the cinema experience should be. Civillised and relaxed..... pretty much the opposite of those souless, sugar selling caverns otherwise known as the multiplex..

The Phoenix will be getting my custom from now on..even if they don't show Expendables 3 ;)
