Eastwood News / Eastwood painting
« on: March 12, 2017, 03:32:36 PM »

Not too sure where to post this or how to link to original story so help appreciated..

The painting is by well known Irish artist Basil Blackshaw who passed away last year at the age of 83.
There's to be an auction of his work and this piece was discovered in a stable on his property and will go on sale for the very first time

I kinda like it..

I guess this belongs in news ?

Off-Topic Discussion / C.G.I Peter Cushing
« on: December 21, 2016, 03:09:08 PM »
Now I'm no fan of the Star Wars franchise, I guess I was just a little too old when they first appeared.. I think I've seen about half an hour of the first one, not sure, don't really remember..

But....I'm hearing and reading all kinds of reports that in the latest instalment.. rogue something.. There's a complete CGI performance by the late great actor Peter Cushing. People who've seen the film tell me it's quite amazing... If so, and it's truly successful, then what does that mean for the future  ?

Can all our favourite and sadly departed movie stars live again on the big screen... ? Or could we someday see a Young Clint back on screen with James Cagney or Steve McQueen... ?

I'm not sure how this works ethically.... But it sure is an interesting idea..

Amazing to think it's been 30 years since John Carpenters The Thing was released..
And amazing to think I enjoyed this film in a virtually deserted cinema in London's West End as audiences
stayed away from this excellent movie ...

General Discussion / Clints baddest baddie ?
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:24:12 AM »
Watching the film Seven Days in May recently I was impressed with Burt Lancaster playing an out and out baddie in the movie..
I know Clints characters are usually heroic in some way.. but which character of Clints is closest the badest guy..?

Is it Munny.. a killer of women and children ? I think maybe so..

Hemlock isnt particuarly heroic either in that he kills out of greed for money to finance his art collection..

Frank Morris.. An armed robber.. ?

Off-Topic Discussion / Your Cinema
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:29:37 PM »
Last night I happened upon a cinema I hadn't visited before.. The Phoenix in North London and what a delight it was..

I saw Wakolda.. an excellent film.. but beforehand enjoyed a light meal and two glasses of a rather fine house red on a balcony overlooking that part of town... This is what the cinema experience should be. Civillised and relaxed..... pretty much the opposite of those souless, sugar selling caverns otherwise known as the multiplex..

The Phoenix will be getting my custom from now on..even if they don't show Expendables 3 ;)

Off-Topic Discussion / VINYL !
« on: July 07, 2014, 02:25:17 AM »
I'm totally back into buying vinyl again.... It just sounds so much better...
I've picked up some killer singles and LPs recently by Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin amongst others...
Beautiful artwork, crisp, clear sound with plenty of bottom end.... I feel a cd clear-out  Comin' on....
How could I ever have strayed..... :(

Off-Topic Discussion / WORLD CUP 2014 !
« on: June 15, 2014, 12:06:57 AM »
Well.... England get their campaign off to a disappointing start with a 2-1 loss to Italy.
I was, however very impressed with our performance for most of the game....and it ain't over yet. If we can keep up that level of performance I'm confident we can progress in the competition...

Off-Topic Discussion / Favourite films of 2013
« on: December 22, 2013, 06:18:00 AM »
I think on the whole its been a pretty good year for movies.. Ive certainly been to the cinema more this year than previously... Anyway.. in no particular order... Heres a short list of films I enjoyed..

Mud...  An original and excellent story.. very well directed and acted. Reminded me a little of Stand By Me

Blue Jasmine.... Cate Blanchett absolutely superb

Django Unchained... I know it had its critics but I thought this was Tarentino's best in years.. Very entertaining and flashy of course.. But facing up to the realities of slavery.. a brave move I thought.. and Spike Lee slated it.. before even seeing it.. always a plus  ;)

The Place Beyond The Pines...  Great storytelling and very ambitious..  I thought Bradley Cooper was excellent in this

Gravity... Just great fun.. no marks for originality or b movie style dialogue... but Wow.. so amazing to look at and a thrill ride.. Probably the only 3d film Ive enjoyed to date..

Behind the Candelabra... Very strong performances all round.. Thoroughly enjoyable..
