This movie sounds like it has a very intriguing story-line. Plus I like the two lead actors.  I have read a couple of other stories where there is no mention that this would be Eastwood's last film but it's gotta happen at some point, although I would never discount him eyeing a story he wants to tell on film.  I agree that reading between the lines does sound like Clint might play a small role or have a cameo type thing.

Great article on one of my favorite movies of all time!  Thanks for posting this.  I could see how that original written ending would have worked ok but the ending in the movie just left you with that dark and forbidding feeling.... just perfect imo.

Finally saw Lafayette Escadrille on TCM today and there was one neat tidbit that I never knew about this movie.  The pitcher throwing to Clint in the baseball game was no other than Billy Jack himself... Tom Laughlin.  Pretty sure I never knew this.

Just to add a little to this discussion, for decades I've repeatedly have read articles that mention that so many of Eastwood's films have made incredible amount of money for Warners, that the studio usually had no problem letting him make a much smaller, personal, intimate movie that by all accounts would not have huge box office.  Maybe in this day of excessive greed ruling everything from movies to sports, Warners will have a different opinion. I always think of two prime Eastwood examples where the studio didn't want to proceed with his projects.... Every Which Way But Loose and Million Dollar Baby.  Wonder how they did?

And for the record, I personally love Honkytonk Man.

Thank you for recommending this documentary, exit00. Somehow it had slipped me up to this point, but I gave it a watch and I enjoyed it very much. My favorite Corbucci film has got to be The Great Silence.

yeah, I was lucky that my film club showed The Great Silence on the big screen at the Alamo theater and I thought it was great.  The other day I watched the Corbucci movie Navajo Joe with Burt Reynolds... which wasn't that great but very entertaining.   That doc made me wonder what if Eastwood had ended up doing a Corbucci movie instead of the Leone one....

Watched a great documentary Django and Django on Netflix (narrated by Tarantino) about the Italian film director Sergio Corbucci who made a bunch of Italian spaghetti westerns in the 60's. Some mention of Eastwood and Leone in this doc with a few behind the scenes videos of Clint making the Leone's films.  Based on what was shown re Corbucci's movie The Mercenary, I was able to find this free on my cable.  It's a must watch movie for fans of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly for some fascinating scenes that are right out of Leone's film.

For Eastwood fans who have Netflix, I highly recommend the documentary as well as The Mercenary movie.....

Yeah, I agree... Warners didn't promote these re-releases at all... I remember reading about them somewhere a few months ago but that was it.  Lucky for me that I'm always looking at my theater's schedule and that they got the movie (just for one screening however).  These re-releases have also been on HBO Max but I don't know if they showed the special documentary as well.

Saw Josey Wales last night at my local Alamo Drafthouse theater in Virginia... released to the theaters as part of the 45th anniversary of the film.  I've seen this movie countless times over the years (including on opening day 45 years ago) but I never get tired of seeing it and watching it again on the big screen was just marvelous.  Perfect storytelling and great cinematography plus one of Clint's best roles.  Can't say much more that hasn't already been said on this board but if anybody gets to see this in a theater near them, make sure to stay after the credits as there is a 15-20 minute great documentary on not just about making Josey Wales but discussion on making all his westerns... lots of interviews including Costner and Scorcese.

Saw the movie today at 12:30 and a pretty decent crowd of around 25 people (all who appeared older than me!).  (One interesting note in the theater lobby, a film-goer was wearing a big brown poncho).

As for the film itself, I liked it a lot and it seem to grow on me as the movie went on.  Pretty much agree with most of what Antonis posted earlier.  Great score/music and cinematography.  Clint seems to love these stories about adult/kid learning life lessons thru each other.  Can't help but marvel at Clint at 91 riding horses and getting down easily to look under a car.  The easy-going story and tone kept reminding me of Honkytonk Man.

Christopher, darn if I missed that thread and just saw that posting in this thread!  That is an interesting photo.. I do remember that Steve McQueen episode but did not notice that scene.  This post and my previous post on this should be deleted as it doesn't really belong in this thread.

This is something I struggle with. I often find this is a problem for me with Eastwood's new films, which is why I tend to like them better on a second viewing.

I?m exactly the same way.... I find it impossible to go in without having super high expectations and then enjoying the movie better on 2nd viewing

Indeed, Clint does not seem to deny that he was in Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series.
But he confirmed nothing. Then, we still have no certainty about his involvement in that TV series.
Clint was in many TV series such as Highway Patrol, Navy Log, West Point, Death Valley Days, Men of Annapolis, Maverick and Mr Ed. Of course, Clint was one of the leading actors of Rawhide.

In the past year, I watched every episode of both Alfred Hitchcock Presents and the Alfred Hitchcock hour and I did not see Clint in any episode.

Yeah I like the Yoakam casting too, but I'm in the complete minority on this but I'm hoping it's not another Perfect World which I found to be a overrated bore....

And I've always thought that A Perfect World was a highly underrated movie with Costner (as well as the kid) so good in that role.  I will say that I almost wish Clint had not been in that movie, just directed it.  I don't know much about the book Cry Macho but from what I read, the main character in the book is 35 years old...

Yeah, I think so too.  Maybe it will be another older/younger relationship picture like A Perfect World, Million Dollar Baby, or Honkytonk Man.  One thing we can be sure of, Clint will have a lot of his usual great one-liners.  I also love the Dwight Yoakam casting.

and Bee Vang seems to have missed the entire point of the film. This was to show that Walt had grown and that he had re-evaluated his racist views after getting to know his Hmong neighbors. Walt served as a commentary that other older people in society could also change, grow and re-evaluate previously prejudiced points of view. Walt sacrificed his own life to save them from the gangs that would have otherwise continued to terrorize them, so it's quite the stretch to say that the film supported racism.

Exactly.  The film was actually anti-racism... in the same way that Unforgiven was really anti-violent themed.  As an actor in the film, Bee Vang should have easily understood this.  Walt wasn't being glorified for his views, but rather shown as being ignorant and so wrong with these views.  I remember thinking at the time that Gran Torino was just like All in the Family where Archie Bunker so often threw out racist stuff but it was to show how wrong he was, not to laugh at it.  There were tons of humor in the show, but not with Archie's racist slurs.  And I agree with AKA that most sensible people who saw Gran Torino knew exactly what Clint intended with the movie and Walt's character.
