DVDbeaver now has a comparison between the old disc and the new R2 SE of For a few Dollars more.

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare10/for_a_few_dollars_more.htm

"The new print is beautiful" they claims! Also, the new DTS and 5.1 mixes should be very good.

The french edition of the new Fistful of Dollars SE seems to contain only english 5.1 and DTS, as well as a french dub in both 5.1 and DTS.

I guess it means that there won't be any space left for the original italian mono - provided they can find it! It could have been lost, but they apparantly found the italian mono for GBU and OUATITW for their SE releases!

(When I say original italian mono, I mean like the track on the region 1 of both GBU SE & OUATITW SE - the original - not any downmixed form the stereo or the 5.1 mix)

what better man for the job him being chairman of the arts council in england and all   O0

and trustee of the V & A museum

That's right! "Art" is the keyword when it comes to Leone films.

So Frayling has NOT been doing Commentary for a supposedly new edition of GBU, as it was rumoured on this thread?

Sorry if this question is too obvious, but I think we should get it straight so there is no misconceptions...

Thanks, Philo.

Seems that April will be an expensive month in dvd's...hmmm!

One last question, though: Has frayling also done commentary on GBU for a possible new release?

Allthough I myself has picked on Schickel and his commentaries on this thread, I must add that I think he does it quite well - especially on Unforgiven - but also on GBU and OUATIA.
Yes, he does tends to say what going on on screen, but give him a break! Most new releases of Leone film are pushing upwards of 3 or 4 hours in lenght. It is a lot of time to talk and comment - especially with Leone's slow narrative.

But hearing Frayling's commentary on OATITW clearly shows that he is the man for commenting on Leone's films...afterall.

Philo, you are close to confirming that Frayling is doing commentary on the upcoming releases? All 3? Let us know when you know more.

Well, the GBU restoration by John Kirk isn't that bad. Only the sound have a few overblown effects.

But we can only hope that MGM have listened to what people have to say.

Maybe the moderators from this board have contacted MGM....?

The Italian mono dub is put on only because it already existed. To mix the English down (wrong move) or create a seperate English mono soundtrack costs extra.

Yeah, but putting the mono on the region 1 was better than the french and german 5.1 on the region 2.

So what you are saying is that MGM will only put the original mono on the new SE's if they can find it?

Yeah, philo. That is what i think too.

MGM must have read ALL online reviews of GBU and OUATITW and are now given in to popular demand.
I mean, the region 1 edition of both these titles have the original italian mono, but the region 2 has some completely irelevant new 5.1 french and german dubs. All online reviews has pointed this out and named the region 1 the ones to go for.
Hopefully the upcoming SE's does have the original italien mono on both region 1 and 2.

And who cares about german and french dub anyway? Even the germans and french surely must see films with the original launguage and then use subtitles, or?

One can only hope that MGM has listened to the critic of the GBU SE (gunshots, no original mono on region 2) and have made the upcoming SE's better in this aspect.

Apparently, MGM HAS seen the light: They have replaced Schickel with Frayling on the commentary....

General Discussion / Re:Who should step up for commentary ?

Well, as we can't have Clint, the next best thing must do...
Although Mr. Schickel has been quite interesting on some commentarys (Unforgiven & GBU) it must could be done better.

How about a comentary from the editor, cinematographer, production designer etc. ?!?
These guys have been with Clint for years and should be able to talk on the behalf of Clint.

Anyone agree?

15

it would seem that with the smashing success of GBU SE that we will indeed soon see  the first 2 Dollars films re-released...

Do you know how many copies the GBU SE has sold?
Although this is not on topic, but do any of you guys know how much the differant Clint dvd's has sold?

Have now watched the GBU special edition 5 times (or more)...and I have just been confirmed that this is one of my absolute favourite movies!!

"They just don't make movies like that anymore" - as Sir Christopher frayling comments on the audio commentary for the OUATITW dvd.

HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!

Could anybody, that have seen the Mystic River 3-disc set, tell me about the QUALITY and how good the extra features are?

The online reviews I have come across seems to suggest that although there are plenty of extras, the extras isn't that elaborative and interesting...

What do you reckon?

There IS an alternate ending, or at least there was, but I don't think Eastwood wants anyone to see it, ever ...  ;)

Care to elaborate a bit on that?
