Off-Topic Discussion / Re: English Pub Question...
« on: April 10, 2009, 02:55:47 PM »
I have to agree with you Gant.    Having been in pubs in the USA and of course the UK I don't really think it is VERY English.   The food looks OK though and they are offering Guiness.    However I have never seen a barmaid dressed like that in a UK pub and I have been in many.   :D

I was wondering about the way the barmaids were dressed as well, Lin. :o  If you go to a pub around here barmaids are dressed in casual attire. I don't know where they came up with that idea, apparently it is NOT authentic.  :D

I wish them well, it takes guts to open a new business in the present bad economy. Many national chain restaurants are closing their doors and many business' are dying a slow death.

The 'American' beer advertising is to be expected as it is an American 'English Pub' restaurant/bar and helps pay the rent. I'm more interested in opinions on the food and drink menu. Outside of the Fish & Chips, I've never heard of most of this food.

The building itself goes back to the 1930s and has been recently remodeled. For many years, up until around 2006, was known as The Mayflower Restaurant, a very popular and rather up scale restaurant in the area. I used to take many of my dates there (said the spider to the fly  ;)). Anyway, it looks like it might be a fun place. Keep the comments coming.

This is a question for our friends in the United Kingdom but anyone can feel free to join in. We had an English Pub open in the area recently and I'd like opinions as to if it really looks authentic and opinions on the food & drink menu. The place does look pretty cool, I'm trying the Fish & Chips for sure. You can visit the website here...

Questions & Answers / Re: GRAN TORINO ON DVD

Sounds like they're trying to coax us into a double dip. Buy the DVD when it comes out June 9th then buy the Deluxe or Special Edition 2 DVD set a few months later. Not me, I hate these studios.  >:D I'll rent 'Gran Torino' when it comes out then look for the double disc Special Edition down the road. Who do these guys think they're messing with?  O0  ;D

BTW, Big Z loved the new Yankee Stadium, said Chicago should build the Cubs a new stadium and I agree. I'm not one of those Cub fans who think of Wrigley Field as a shrine, it's a dump. I've been going to Wrigley Field since 1963, I know what I'm talking about, it's hard to get to and hard to get out of, it's in an old downtown residential area, restrooms and concessions are a joke, parking nonexistent. Wrigley Field should have been knocked down forty years ago when the Bears stopped playing there.

End of rant. >:D  ;D

Yeah. I saw part of Saturday's Cubs @ Yankees game on Chicago Comcast Sports Network. Didn't much care for the outcome but the Cubs are just getting warmed up.  ;)

We'll see you Yankees in the World Series and even up the score...I hope.  :o It should be a fun baseball season.  :D

The Chicago Cubs are opening the season tomorrow night @ Houston. The Chicago White Sox opening game in Chicago has already been canceled due to a snow storm moving thru Chicago. I don't know why MLB continues to schedule games in Chicago in early April. There are cities in a warmer climate that are better suited for these early season games.  ::)

Anyway, baseball season gets underway tomorrow.  :D

Thanks Christopher. I was wondering the same thing. I'm waiting on the DVD as well, I hope the movie is worthy of a two DVD Special Edition.  :)

I've got season one on DVD. Want to get season two.

"Missed it by that much."

'Get Smart' was a very popular TV series in the 60s, still makes me laugh today.   ;D

They're talking about 3 to 6 inches of snow on Sunday, high about 30°F. It's been cold and snowy and miserable here for about 6 months, that's enough already! What happened to spring?  ;)  >:(

I agree JMG. The copy that I have is a Japanese import on virgin vinyl. It sounds great.

My copy is the CD on the Verve Records Clef Series label issued 1997 in a red tri-fold cardboard container. April in Paris was originally released in 1956, love that lush big band sound.

The snow we were supposed to get over the weekend didn't amount to much. In fact, by Sunday afternoon it was pretty much melted away. We're not out of the woods until late April around here but whatever we get won't last. Right now it's 53°F. Next up, tornado season.  :(

Count Basie, one of the greats. April in Paris is an excellent recording.

I just looked out my back door and saw a beautiful red Cardinal moving about in a tree. Right now it's 27°F and we're getting freezing rain. I honestly don't know how birds survive these conditions.  :(

We're under a Winter Storm Warning for Saturday afternoon thru Sunday morning. They're calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow. I knew there was a reason I didn't put the snow blower away just yet.  O0

This is not unusual in these parts. I can remember playing league softball in the middle of May during a heavy snow storm...must be about thirty years ago. That was interesting.  ::)

Autumn for me.

The leaves start to turn beautiful colors, temps are moderate, there's a nice crispness in the night air. And, most importantly, we're on the cusp of another Football Season.  :D

However, I'm not too crazy about what comes after autumn.  :(
