This room is really for Web Site announcements for this site or other Eastwood related sites.

Ally found a site that allows free image hosting that allows direct linking to message boards.  Use this site if you're interested:

http://www.imageshack.us/

From the site FAQ:

Quote
Images that have not been accessed in over a year will be deleted. This is by no means the maximum storage time, but rather the minimum. This means that as long as people view your image (wherever it may be), it's clock will reset. So, if someone looks at your image on day 364, that image will not be deleted for another year.

That's a long time to host a free image!

Thanks for the information, Ally. :)

I have tried to use imageshack and have had no luck posting a Eastwood image in this thread.

Can anyone else get it to work?

It is probably me  :-\

It worked for me in the Avatars thread where I posted this image, hosted by ImageShack:

Try it again, see if it works now.

Thanks for letting me know.

Am I correct that once you receive an address from them for your image that you cut and paste it to the board in the normal way?

I am very keen for this to work as I have images to post and do not want to trouble the moderators to have to host them as their capacity is short.

I have tried it twice but as it appears to work I will keep trying.

I think I might know what the problem is, Philo. Check your image file extension. I think I remember one of yours I hosted once was a .bmp file. Image Shack will only host pictures that have jpg, jpeg, gif or png extensions.

Here's what the screen looks like after ImageShack has hosted a picture, you just copy/paste the entire line inside the first box:

(The above screenshot was saved as a jpg file, and then hosted by ImageShack.)

If the file is one of the permitted file types (jpeg, jpg, gif or png) another explanation is that the file is too large. Check out the Image Shack FAQ:

Quote
8.  What is the upload limit? Which image types am I allowed to upload?

You may upload as many images as you like, as long as each of them is less than 850kb in size. You may upload .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .png image types. There are currently plans to expand this limit via the ImageShack Crusaders program.

9.  All my images are too big, how do I compress them?

Check out this guide: Image Compression Tutorial.

10.  How do I convert images so that I am able to upload them?

If you have an image that is not a jpg, jpeg, png, or gif, you can convert it using the Easy Graphic Converter or IfranView. This software is extremely easy to use. Please refer to the Image Compression Tutorial for the best way to convert images. The image compression tutorial is best used with photo manipulation software like Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro.

That is a pretty good one. :) I use it to host some stuff. There is a monthly bandwidth limit, but I have not hit it yet.

You are correct about that image Matt, I did convert it to a jpeg first, and then I tried an image that always was a jpeg.

From what you explained I did everythng right on both occasions. When I previewed my post all I had was the little white box with the red X in it.

Due to excessive work have not had chance to try it again yet.

Thanks for the info, will give it a go tonight or tomorrow (day off)

Surely that's not the case since it came from one of your fellow countrymen......well, in this case "countrywomen."  ;D

Can you tell what size the images are that you're trying to have them host?  Are they larger than the 850kb allowed?

If you would like, you can send me the pictures you're trying to host and I'll see if I can do them from over here.  At least we can rule out whether it's the pictures or it's the fact that it is just not working for you for some reason.

And, I took it as such as evidenced by the  ;D I added at the end.

Glad you got it to work.

Any explanation for why it wasn't working all along, Philo? Did you do anything different this time?

Matt ,

I think the only thing I did differently was browsed for the address instead of locating it in my pictures and pasting it into imageshack.

I didn't think it would make a difference but will try again soon with the paperweight.

I hope it continues to work because I had decided not to bother anyone with hosting these large images for me.

Yeah, that definitely can explain the problem, since if you don't  type the file name exactly the same, including the correct case of every letter in the name and the correct file extension, it won't be able to load it.

Just in case anyone new to hosting pics on http://www.imageshack.us needs a hand posting them here...

The imageshack layout has changed slightly since Matt posted his handy "how to" on page one of this thread.  They now have more choices of links to copy and paste into your post, to accommodate people using different kinds of forum.

To get your pic to work on this great forum, you should copy and paste the link titled "Hotlink for forums (1)" into your post.  The other (2) version is for a different kind of forum.

If you just want to post a thumbnail of your pic, with a link to the full size image, you should copy and paste into your post the link titled "Thumbnail for forums (1)".

This is what the imageshack page looks like, after you've uploaded your picture, with my notes added in red:
