It looks like this is being made, but thankfully, Eastwood appears to no longer be involved. Warner Bros wants Bradley Cooper to direct and star with Beyonce, who was Warners original choice for the "star." ! I REALLY did not see this coming.

What, AKA, don't you know Warners execs watch this board closely and have been reading about how unhappy you were about Clint's involvement with this? Of course they finally gave in and got Clint to give up the project! Just for you! ;)

Variety also has the Cooper story now:

Note that it still says "in talks." Meaning maybe, maybe not.

Good one KC!  :2funny: I only wish I had that kind of influence over Clint's selection of film projects! ;)

I'd forgotten that Cooper had been considered for the lead--interesting that he wound up in American Sniper. If he directs this, that'll certainly be a twist I didn't see coming!

Apparently, Cooper and Clint knew each other from the days when this project was in the planning stage, and that was why Cooper contacted Clint after Spielberg dropped out of Sniper. From the deadline.com link AKA posted, above:

Quote
When Steven Spielberg dropped out of American Sniper, Warner Bros worldwide production president Greg Silverman told Cooper that Eastwood was reading the book for recreation. Cooper was able to call Eastwood directly because of the relationship they developed when Eastwood offered Cooper that male lead in A Star Is Born.

It will be interesting to see if and when the film is made, whether or not the components of Eastwood's vision will remain intact. When Eastwood was planning this, he said that he wanted it to be centered around a jazz singer and set in that world. I suspect that that's something that's likely to be changed now that Eastwood has left the project.

What do you mean?

Only that, whatever hijinx are at play here, I sense that something very deep and unanswerable is going on. Or at least we’ll never get the answers. There’s trouble in the henhouse but the rooster never crows, if you know what I’m saying…

You could be right, but I'm not sure that it's all that deep. I think Eastwood probably got tired of waiting for this project to come to fruition. It didn't seem ready for him to film in its current form, and still likely isn't, since Bradley Cooper of all people is helping to re-write the script.

Bradley Cooper just signed a production deal with Warner Bros, so they're obviously mutually interested in him getting more involved with making films there. I think this is a pretty difficult project for a first time director though, so I'm not sure Bradley Cooper is the right choice for this. A musical isn't an easy project to film, and this has been remade multiple times already. Someone who has never directed before doesn't seem like a good choice for such a complex project.

...it may even be untoward.

or perhaps Clint has taken the young lad under his wing, mentoring him the way Eastwood's great directors did for him to give it a try. I know Beyonce bounced on the project right after Clint did his RNC speech...so maybe it's also a hangover from that. Or maybe she just said "Jersey Boys." (Zing! Haven't seen it, gratuitous shot.) But based on Cooper's analysis and portrayal of Chris Kyle, it seems like he's insightful enough to have a clear vision as a director.

They should do a remake of Play Misty for Me with Beyonce as Evelyn...or maybe more believable in Clint's role as the object of affection. Although the Star is Born story will no doubt kill in today's market, especially with her. And Clint did pick pretty well with American Sniper.

Clint has also long worked with a consistent stable of actors and crew from film to film...so it's interesting that Bradley Cooper was up for the role in Star is Born, starred in Sniper and now is directing Star is Born, for Warners. Sounds like they could work on something in the future, if the pattern holds.

We can all breath a sigh of relief.
Beyoncé Joins That A Star Is Born Remake With Bradley Cooper (Again)

Now we know why Beyoncé's taking acting classes. Page Six reports that Bradley Cooper is moving ahead with a remake of A Star Is Born, which he plans to star in and direct, and that Beyoncé is (once again) going to be his co-star. The remake of the classic 1954 Judy Garland musical (which was itself a remake of a 1937 film) has floated around Hollywood since 2011. Then, Clint Eastwood was set to direct, while everyone from Tom Cruise to Leonardo DiCaprio was attached as the male lead. Throughout more than a year of negotiations, Beyoncé was attached as the female lead — until those talks finally fell apart. ...

Wow, the thread is nearly five years old (this has to be the longest thread I've ever started too  ), and it finally looks like it's going to happen.

Is anyone else surprised that Cooper is looking to direct this himself? Has he directed anything before?

He's an impressive actor who has worked with Clint, so I'm not too surprised. It will be his directorial debut. Good luck to him!

This might not be happening after all, at least not with Beyonce.
