Back on my French Revolutionary trivia ... I was hoping someone would think of Antoine Lavoisier, the man sometimes called the "father of modern chemistry." He was also a "tax farmer," which sealed his fate in the Revolution ... and goes to show you how mad people can get at the people who profit from the outsourcing of stuff the government should be doing.

And my "bonus question"? France finally abolished capital punishment in 1981. The last person to be executed in France was Hamida Djandoubi, who was put to death in September 1977.

And Matt, you really needed to quote Sydney Carton's last words, which are probably more familiar to most people than anything else in the book except its opening paragraph ...

Quote
It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.

And since we turned the page ... Matt's new one:

Okay next question will be music -- and this is another that was from my trivia night.  Without listening to the song or Googling -- name the U.S. state mentioned in the song "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay".

;D  It's not Kansas. Surely we can pull in more players when the topic is popular music from the 60's. :)

I know... I almost did. But, it isn't just those two great lines - that whole last chapter is my favorite ever written.

While we wait for Gant's next... speaking of Sydney Carton, I was watching Downton Abbey (Season 1) last night, and Robert Crawley said to Mr. Carson (who had attempted to turn in his resignation) "Oh stop being so melodramatic. You're not Sydney Carton."   ;D

But there is a strong rumour that Sting, Summers and Copeland faked it...

I can only think of 5 or 6 but I reckon there must be more
I'm not a fan but here's the ones I remember from childhood on..

Graeme Hill
Jackie Stewart
Alan Hunt
Nigel Mansell
Damon Hill
Lewis Hamilton

I reckon there were winners earlier than G Hill but can't think of names..

Not bad at all, Gant.

Yes, you are right there were earlier winners than Graham Hill.  All the ones after Graham Hill's second World Championship title in 1968 you have got. By the way it is James Hunt not Alan Hunt. :)
