Thanks, exit00! I'm surprised we don't have more posts in this thread now that the movie has opened. I've only read a sampling of the reviews myself, but they seem to fall into two categories: 1) Generally positive and appreciative like A.O. Scott's above, and 2) Unable to get past what they consider the film's fatal flaw and its presumed ideological bent. Still, it's tracking 73% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (74% for so-called "Top Critics")—and it has a 96% "audience score."

It seems that most of us haven’t seen it yet. That could explain the fact that we don’t have more posts in this thread. For instance, I have to wait until February 19th, which is the French release date. I have read many reviews too. Indeed, they are generally positive. Unfortunately, that’s not enough for making Richard Jewell a good opening at the box office. This year, competition is tough with movies like Jumanji, Frozen 2 and the Star Wars movie. I’m curious to know what’s next for Clint. Will he keep making movies based on real events or not ?

Richard Jewell opened here last week as "O Caso Richard Jewell" (Richard Jewell Case) and have had some very good reviews. I watched the movie last night and must agree with them. Richard Jewell works as one more chapter of a Clint's obsession: relating facts, characters (especially ordinary people) and chapters of US history through his clinical and melancholic look.
Only in the 2010 the veteran recounted the anguish of FBI's first director (J. Edgar), rise and fall of The Four Seasons (Jersey Boys: In Search of Music) vocal group, the red-hot nerves of a soldier (American Sniper) and a pilot avoiding a tragedy (Sully: The Hudson River Hero).
Richard Jewell subtly connects with all these movies, especially with Sully and 3:17 pm. It exposes, examines and problematizes the culture of building heroes and then demolishes them without any ceremony. In the era of the war on terror, a misleading (or at least hasty) newspaper cover is enough for an idol to become a traitor.
The main character (Paul Walter Hauser) is just a regular guy. Adult, single, lonely, living with his mother, Bobi (Kathy Bates, Golden Globe nominee for the role), he walks from job to job. But his true dream is to be a policeman again.
In this narrative of ordinary people - the falsely accused innocent, the self-sacrificing lawyer, and the suffering mother - against belligerent authorities, Eastwood seems to question: why is always easier to provoke minor collateral tragedies rather than accepting the lack of easy answers to horror of terrorism? The Richard Jewell Case is a straightforward portrayal of how contradictory, flawed, and fleeting the concept of heroism can be.
Billy Ray's script (Captain Phillips, Terminator: Dark Destiny) does not surrender to generalizations, such as pointing a finger at the media. Remember, for example, that Eastwood celebrated good journalism in the underrated True Crime (1999).
With the usual visual and sentimental economy, the filmmaker sets the plot in powerful performances by dramatizing the delicate fabric that separates private and public life, the press and justice. In times of fake news around the world, Richard Jewell is an irresistibly up-to-date nineteenth-century movie. https://www.metropoles.com/entretenimento/cinema/critica-eastwood-expoe-onus-do-heroismo-em-o-caso-richard-jewell
There are some others very interesting reviews that I am lazy to translate right now but those are the links. https://observatoriodocinema.bol.uol.com.br/criticas/criticas-de-filmes/2020/01/critica-o-caso-richard-jewellhttps://www.planocritico.com/critica-o-caso-richard-jewell/I look a mess but took a picture
