Silent era films: what are your favorite ones?

I watched city lights earlier. Really great movie. Enjoyed it a lot!  It really flows well with constant excitement and entertainment. Very funny movie.

AKA23  have you watched a silent film yet or plan on watching one soon?  City Lights isn't a short one but it's a great one to watch. Highly recommend it. Curious to hear your thoughts after watching a silent film.

From the top of my head:

- Paul Fejos' Lonesome (1928), the basic boy meets girl and they fall in love, but it's simple, silly, naive, beautiful. And it was done in a time when they were experimenting with sound and colour (stencils) and both the sound (dialogue, sound, and song) and colour are so minimal and only appear when really necessary. It just melt my heart and I felt in love with this movie.

- and anything by Josef von Sternberg, specially the Criterion Collection's 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg. Amazing movies, superb cinematography (I believe the best I have ever seen in silent era films).


- Metropolis has been mentioned but I would advise you to see the 2010 restored version as it is the most complete version. Before this restored version I never enjoyed the movie, I thought it was a boring mess and I couldn't understand what the "buzz" was all about Metropolis... and then I saw the restored version and my jaw dropped.

Xichado! How wonderful to hear from you! How have you been, old friend?

I am good-ish! The last few weeks I have been feeling a bit low as I am missing everything and everyone, I can't complaint much as I am in good health but since the majority of my work involves assisting patients in hospitals and clinics I decided to avoid any sort of social gatherings/meetings. I am planning to spend the winter time in Portugal with my parents as I need/feel the need to spend time with my family.

I just watched Safety Last on HBO Max, and it was very good! There are a few other silent movies on there too.

I just watched Girl Shy starring Harold Lloyd. I loved it! It's about 80 minutes long and moved really fast. I'll check out some more Lloyd stuff.
