EVERY WHICH WAY: Business and Publicity 1: The Poster

Some consider him the father of the modern movie poster, others call him the king of illustrators. One of America's most prolific and respected illustrators and painters, Peak's credits spread the gamut from fashion to sports, from postage stamps to fine art and through some of the most notable movie posters to have ever existed. Starting with West Side Story and ending with Impromptu, including: Apocalypse Now, Camelot, Excalibur, My Fair Lady, Silverado, Superman and the first five Star Trek films.

The artwork of Bob Peak has graced many Time, TV Guide and Sports Illustrated magazine covers. He has also been selected, along with Norman Rockwell and NC Wyeth to become a member of the prestigious Illustrators Hall of Fame.

I have to get to work but I couldn't leave without starting off with the poster .
 
This is a great piece of artwork . I never wanted to see this film. The uk radio spots (voiced by Ed Bishop) stated "There is always something funny going on, going on.
 
Upon seeing those varied characters on the poster made me at least pay my 95p admission.
 
I was never the same again .

It's a pretty good poster.

Since it shows lots of characters on it and Clint with an orangutang, you know this isn't going to be one of Eastwood's normal movies, but it's going to be a fun, differant movie.

I like the poster a lot too.  The scan of the poster here doesn't even do justice to the great colors and detail of the artwork, so I'm adding this image of just Peak's artwork for the poster:

Not as eye-catching as the first one, which I like, especially the quality plain artwork version.  I also like the use of the different characters, and the unusual style, but I find the portrayal of Philo's face a bit harsh.  It doesn't look much like Clint, who has softer features.  I think it makes Philo look meaner than he is.  I also think Clyde looks a bit soppy.  Much better than the advanced sheet above, however - the different characters are there, but don't stand out, and the slogan "wait till you see these strange people doin' strange things" doesn't seem to fit the bill somehow.

I agree Lilly and it is well known that Warner's had no faith in the film at that time and didn't know how to pitch it.

There are less designs for this film so there won't be too many examples .

The first one looks like some sort of ad for a Dirty Harry movie or one of his cop films.

I am not sure how many countries had the two films doubled up. The only official poster I have ever found is ours here in the UK.





"Double the punch" is as good a tagline as any I guess.

There was a collection of Bob Peak prints that you could buy some years back and this was one of them.






Great stuff. There is still the insert poster image which is quite like this. I have found a couple of photos of this but none yet good enough to post. Will keep looking.

I knew we would agree on something .

This great poster I first saw in a movie store in Chicago in 1989 and could not afford to buy it.

These days they can be found on Ebay for $15 and up. They are all original 14x36 and printed on high quality thick card.

I think that is it for posters on this film.
