From Dark Horizons:

Quote
Ahhh the Warner Bros. Lot in Burbank. Behind those huge concrete walls of an indeterminate beige/pink/yellow hybrid colour lies a lot like no other, and one which 'BastardofCarolina' was visiting when he came upon this juicy rumour:

"Warner are remaking Dirty Harry. I know because I auditioned for a feature there last week and another prospect (someone you might know in fact) told me about it - information from his agent that just came down that day.

Clint Eastwood passed on doing a new Dirty Harry flick a few months back apparently, which they'd been fleshing out ideas for for several months prior. He's beyond that now obviously. So yeah, it's being remade. The idea is start from scratch and put Callahan back into his swinging 30's or something.

And you know who they want? (whether this means he'll get it or not I dunno) The Rock. Apparently Dwayne's a big fan of Eastwood's early stuff and knows about it. So the ball's in his court it seems. Ben Bratt is another. Regardless, guess he'll still have 1 bullet left in the chamber...

I shudder to think what Don Siegel would think though"

Oh God... if this is true, I hate Warners again. Anyways this is just still speculation so take it for what it's worth... hopefully nothing. The man who runs Dark Horizons is typically never wrong and his sources are credible, so it's not like he just posts anything. IF you think about it, this isn't really surprising.

They don't make them like Clint anymore

I sincerely hope this is a rumour which comes to nothing as I can't believe they are looking to re-make DH. Starsky and Hutch I can understand but, Clint is just too iconic for it to work, I think.

I like the Rock, but seriously though. I think Agent mentioned something about this...that they'd probably get someone like him for a remake.

The original was so contraversial in it's day, do you think they'd do it the same way now?

I'm with you guys on this one!  I can't imagine a remake of DH being anything I'd want to see unless it had Clint starring in it.  It would be such a disappointment.  I would rather see them bring Clint as DH out of retirement to solve a crime that relates to the original movie, maybe someone with the same MO etc.  I could watch something like that!  It would have Mr. Eastwood in it.  What d'ya think?  Has this been discussed before?

As much as I'm against a new Dirty Harry, with anyone, I too would rather see Clint dust off the ol'.44 Magnum and come back for another one then have to see Dirty Harry get a bad remake. Along with Christopher, I like The Rock, but no!! Just no!! Leave it be Warners, leave it be.

Lighten up, guys!!!!! Some of the best films ever made were remakes, for example, A Fistful Of Dollars was a remake of Yojimbo. Do I think it will be as good as the original?Huh? Hell no, but it will lead viewers to the original, better, version. With that said, though, The Rock is turning into the remake king, with Walking Tall and now this. Nicolas Cage is a better choice in my opinion.

Just goes to show you how truth is stranger (and in this case - more pathetic) than fiction. Just the typical Eisner mentality of doing whatever it takes - even if that means whoring yourself -  to make profits.

Don't worry - if it's remade, I predict it'll be quickly forgotten, on the DVD bargain racks within months, then out of print -  but ultimately be a booster for the original.

This is getting to be ridiculous. If it comes to that, I'd much rather have Clint do another Dirty Harry film than have him allow Warner Bros. to remake it with The Rock! I'm against the idea of a remake of the original, but if it were done, at the very least they must get somebody who knows how to act and would do the character justice. The Rock certainly isn't the man for the job, in my opinion. It debases the original to just pick people out of a hat for their bankability and to use the concept for profit Sad This is a terrible idea.

Your right, The Rock isn't the man for the job and looking at his past several movies, none have done to well (The Rundown should have made more money), with the exception of The Mummy Returns, but that was to expected. The Scorpion King did alright, but it didn't make huge load of cash.

But again, that's just who they want. The Rock has turned down roles in Predator 3 and debunked rumours of him starring in Terminator 4 because he doesn't want to take those away from Arnold, because he respects him so much. So, I guess, he'd maybe do the same for Clint. Hopefully... if he's smart.

Either way, time will tell...

Brendan, my thoughts exactly. WHY does this always have to happen...I'm not a fan of The Rock (they might as well have Vin Diesel in the role, for gawd's sake!) and I seriously doubt this version will have anything going for it. Why do they have to do a remake? Are they so short of scripts that they have to remake all the classics? I'm not against remakes on principle - e.g. The Magnificent Seven was a remake of the Japanese film Seven Samurai - but this is completely different. First The Pink Panther, now this  Huh

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

If I were Clint, I'd do another one just to avoid having it be remade so horribly. We may want to change the title of this thread, guys. It may give people the impression that Clint Eastwood has signed on for another Harry film, when in fact we are talking about a remake of the original.

One Word: 'No'

I hope to god this is a rumour, don't filmmakers learn anything !!!!!

A film is a piece of art, and you don't re-paint the Mona Lisa, and sell it to a gallery, do you ?

Starsky and Hutch I can understand

Well I can't .....  Huh

I read this morning that Brad Pitt wants to remake Bullitt.

No good storylines and less and less good films.

Good news for digital cinema , with projects like this they don't deserve to be on film.

Assuming Eastwood is not involved in this project, I don't see why any topics relating to this rumor can't go in the Off Topic forum.
