Hey Matt, great game!  I'm a big fan of The Fab Four and won't need to listen to make my choices.  I'm all too familiar with their repetoire.  Sorry I missed the first round.  Here's my choices for this round:

1. Ask Me Why
2. There's A Place
3. P.S. I Love You

This is a great introduction to those who don't know much of The Beatles ...is that POSSIBLE?!  ;D

Good to see you joining in, Jed! Try to check in everyday to participate in every round. Sometime in 2006 when we're done Beatles Song Survivor, maybe you'd like to run an Elvis Song Survivor. You have all his music, so all you'd need is a program that creates MP3s from WAV files (if you don't already have one) and a few free Geocities sites. Think you might be up for that?

I'm guessing by the time we get to "A Hard Day's Night", I'll be having a real hard time... and forget it by the time we get to "Rubber Soul"! But, we'll have to just find the strength to somehow do this!

It looks like "Please Please Me" will definitely be surviving this round.  O0

I'm not a big fan of music pre-Fab 4, so Jed and anyone else who's a big Elvis fan or fan of 50's music can answer this for me: Were songs with such sexually explicit lyrics as this one common back then, or pre-1963?

Quote
Last night I said these words to my girl
I know you never even try, girl
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please, please me, woah yeah, like I please you

You don't need me to show the way, love
Why do I always have to say, love
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please, please me, woah yeah, like I please you

I don't want to sound complaining
but you know there's always rain in my heart
I do all the pleasing with you,
it's so hard to reason with you
woah yeah, why do you make me blue?

Last night I said these words to my girl
I know you never even try, girl
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please, please me, woah yeah, like I please you
woah yeah, like I please you
woah yeah, like I please you

(Lyrics courtesy of Steve's Beatles Page)

Love the way John sings this. Can hear the desperation in his voice.... "Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on! Please please me.... woah yeah, like I please you!"   And who hasn't been in that predicament?

And that ends Round 2. Say goodbye to "Ask Me Why" and "There's A Place".

BEATLES SONG SURVIVOR - ROUND THREE

As before, vote off two of the following songs, and list an alternate third choice that will only be used as a tie-breaker if needed. The three surviving songs from this round will be brought back later in the game to compete with the other rounds' survivors.

1.  "I Saw Her Standing There" (Lennon/McCartney); Lead vocal: McCartney, with Lennon
2.  "A Taste of Honey (Marlow/Scott); Lead vocal: McCartney
3.   "Do You Want To Know A Secret" (Lennon/McCartney); Lead vocal: Harrison
4.   "Misery" (Lennon/McCartney); Lead vocal: Lennon, with McCartney
5.   "Anna (Go To Him)" (Alexander); Lead vocal: Lennon, with McCartney and Harrison

(When I end a round and start the next, I'll need to take the songs from the previous round down so that the next round's songs will fit on the website. Therefore the links in each round will still show up, but they won't work once that round has ended.)

NOTE:  You can join in the game anytime. You don't need to have been voting from the beginning to play.

In the CD notes for "Please Please Me" is an article by record reviewer Tony Barrow (I think this article was also printed on the back of the LP. Mine is stored away, so I can't check) that includes the following excerpt:

Quote
MISERY may sound as though it is a self-duet created by the multi-recording of a single voice . . . but the effect is produced by the fine matching of two voices belonging to John and Paul. There is only one "trick duet" and that is on A TASTE OF HONEY featuring a dual-voiced Paul.

I can hear Lennon singing the back-ups along with Paul on "A Taste of Honey". Or, maybe he doesn't actually mean that Lennon isn't also singing, but just that Paul is double tracked on this song, backing himself this one time. If that's what he meant, what he wrote seems a little misleading.

ANYway....

As for my choices:

1 "Misery"
2 "Anna"
3 "Do You Want To Know a Secret"

I actually like "A Taste of Honey" quite a bit, even though it's corny.  :)

My choice.

1  Anna
2  Misery
3  Do You Want To Know A Secret.

A Taste of Honey is one I really like, there is something about it that epitomises the 1960's.

I do like Honey as well.. but I've always been a fan of Anna. Both the original and the Beatles version. It's great hearing these tracks again.. I havn't listened to this album for ages.

That was a close round. This is the first time I've needed to use the tie-breaking third choice. This round we lose "A Taste of Honey" and "Misery".

The way I've decided to do a tie-breaking round is to go through all the posts in that round, giving each member's first choice to be eliminated 3 points, their second choice 2 points, and their third choice one point. The songs with the highest points get booted. The results came in with "A Taste of Honey" and "Misery" with 13 points each, "Do You Want To Know a Secret" with 12 points, and "Anna" with 10 points.

BEATLES SONG SURVIVOR - ROUND FOUR

With this round, we'll finish the one-day recording session that yielded the first Beatles album "Please Please Me". The first four selections for this round are from that album, and the fifth selection, "From Me To You," was only released as a single (but was released later on several compilation albums).

This should be a tough round!

As before, vote off two of the following songs, and list an alternate third choice that will only be used as a tie-breaker if needed. The three surviving songs from this round will be brought back later in the game to compete with the other rounds' survivors.

1.  "Boys" (Dixon/Farrell); Lead vocal: Starr, with McCartney and Harrison
2.  "Chains" (Goffin/King); Lead vocal: Harrison, with McCartney
3.   "Baby It's You" (David/Williams/Bacharach); Lead vocal: Lennon, with McCartney and Harrison
4.   "Twist And Shout" (Russell/Medley); Lead vocal: Lennon, with McCartney and Harrison
5.   "From Me To You" (Lennon/McCartney); Lead vocal: Lennon, with McCartney

(When I end a round and start the next, I'll need to take the songs from the previous round down so that the next round's songs will fit on the website. Therefore the links in each round will still show up, but they won't work once that round has ended.)

Okay, this is the first round where there isn't one song that I don't really love. So, for me, this is the first hard round. On the other hand, I will say that anyone who thinks of eliminating "Twist & Shout" will be hunted down and locked in a room for 72 hours with nothing to listen to but all the crap that's on Top 40 radio these days.

Okay, here comes the hard part:

1)  "Chains" (Really sorry, George. I do love this song... but the competition this round is tough.)

2.  "Baby It's You"

3.  "Boys" (Probably my favorite Ringo song)
