If you want to read a completely fictional account of the Beatles, try Paperback Writer: The Life and Times of the Beatles, the Spurious Chronicle of Their Rise to Stardom, Their Triumphs and Disasters, Plus the Amazing by Mark Shipper.

It's a pretty amusing (and sometimes annoying) parady of The Beatles' career.  It was published in 1978.

The reader reviews on this book look great.  Thank God for Amazon--that one is on its way here now too.

Does anyone remember the travesty that was" Stars on 45 " Beatles mix from the early 80's.

Yeah,I picked that up in a second hand record shop about 10 years ago for a couple of bucks.I don't play it much but it was at a time when I was buying anything to do with the Beatles.

Can anyone recommend any other "must reads"?

Another reason why I got into The Beatles,which I just remembered this morning was back in 70's during the school holidays,sometimes I would go to these big shopping centres with my grandparents and they always had some show on the centre stage there for kids,and one show that I loved was a puppet show with what I always thought were turtles,but were obviously beetles complete with mop tops singing Beatle songs.I can't remember if there was one or two puppeteers behind the curtain,probably two as all four puppets moved at the same time.I always remember when their were playing She Loves You and all four heads would do that wiggle.Great memories that I remember thanks to this thread.
Lin,do you remember seeing this? They used to do the rounds at Westfield shopping centres.

I read Albert Goldman's " The Lives of John Lennon"

It was a difficult read, he was very scathing about John's personality ( McCartney was painted in less than flattering terms too ). Very much warts and all kind of book - with the emphasis on the warts.

The book has been discredited by many writers, no doubt Goldman had his own agenda ( he did a number on Elvis too) but there are interesting background stories that are glossed over or left out of "official"
biographies

I looked through the sample pages on Amazon. Does he explain how he knows all this personal stuff about John Lennon anywhere in the book? In any case, it was only 47 cents used, so I bought that too. Like the McGilligan "biography" on Clint, I'll read it with a grain of salt.

This round, we continue with songs from the "Help" album, as well as the "B" side to the "Help!" single, "I'm Down", released on July 23, 1965;



and "Bad Boy", from the U.S. album "Beatles VI", released on June 14, 1965. "Bad Boy" wouldn't be released in the U.K. until December 9, 1966 when it appeared on "A Collection of Beatles Oldies".




As before, vote off two of the following songs, and list an alternate third choice that will only be used as a tie-breaker if needed. The three surviving songs from this round will be brought back later in the game to compete with the other rounds' survivors.

I remember seeing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" at the cinema. It was a support flick for American Hot Wax. Very funny little movie.

Nice to see the cover of "Oldies" album, a neighbour of mine had this one, such a cool cover, I love the trippy art work

Matt, I borrowed the Goldman book from a library so I can't check his references, sorry about that.
There are lots of references to Cynthia, Aunt Mimi and a fair amount of backstory prior to The Beatles.
It has been suggested that his research left alot to be desired and that he edited cleverly to make John appear far worse than he was.

Yes I do remember some of the puppet shows in the Westfield Centres.   One time I lived in Strathfield (Sydney ) and our nearest Westfield was in Burwood and they often had stuff on there.   I don't remember the show but I do remember them playing the Beatles songs from the stage.    I did see some copy cat group on stage in Penrith Westfield and they were dreadful!!
