I love all these songs. You gotta love a rock song that takes some its lyrics from the Tao Te Ching as "The Inner Light" does. And "Hello Goodbye" might be fluff, at least lyrically, but it's mixture of pop and psychedelia is great. And "Across the Universe" just might be my favorite song by The Beatles. Okay, maybe I've said that before, but it's way, way up there. Only my favorite version is the one you'll find on Past Maters Volume Two. Quoting from the CD: This one is commonly known as the "Wildlife" version because it first appeared on 12 December 1969 on a charity album for the World Wildlife Fund, and was adorned especially for that LP with wildlife sound effects. But it had been recorded much earlier, in eight takes on 4 and 8 February 1968, as a rival to "Lady Madonna" for the Beatles' March 1968 single. In March 1970 Phil Spector re-worked this original tape, omitted some of the original instrumentation in a new remix, omitted the sound effects, slowed it down and added an orchestra and a choir for Let It Be. In other words he did everything he could to ruin one of the greatest songs John Lennon ever wrote. I can barely listen to the Let It Be version, knowing the damage he wrecked upon that song. 1 Lady Madonna 2 Hello Goodbye 3 Hey Bulldog (I surprise myself with these picks.  ) |

Everybody's Got Something To Hide Over the years this has become my favourite Beatles album, variety and competitive edge to the writing carries the weaker tracks to make an impressive double album ( Led Zep's Physical Graffiti is another example of the double working when it really shouldn't ). A nice wee joke in Men In Black when Tommy Lee Jones is showing Alien technology to Will Smith, he point out a tiny disc as a music carrier and mutters " I'll have to buy the white album again "  |
