Every time I read about this, I still associate it with John Cassavetes. I can't know for sure, but it seems like I watched something that featured a clip of him doing something like this.

It really doesn't sound like Clint, though.

Well, assuming it happened, it almost must have happened at least twice, once in the U.K. and once in Sweden. Unless Swedes watch a lot of British talk shows, or vice versa.

Thanks for translating the text for everyone on the forum, KC.

Is it really that hard to see Clint do such a thing? I don't see him not smoking as a reason to doubt the story, since it was just a trick.

Anyways, you'd think this kind of thing taking place would stick to your memory well enough to remember who did the actual trick, especially if it was someone like Clint.

It's amazing the amount of times I look at "Who's Online" and there is a guest or two looking at this topic.

I think we need the team from Mythbusters to finally solve this one or who it actually was. :D

Hi, i came over this thread when i was looking for the clip with Clint, and I'm looking for it because I've saw it a couple of year ago and thought it was cool. So i know it's real. Now I'm trying to find it so i can show it for a friend.

I actually don't remember in what talkshow he was on, but the person interviewing Clint Eastwood was a girl. And i don't know if it's a big rumor in Sweden but people I've discussed this amazing video with has never heard about it, and yes I'm Swedish.

I remember that i saw the clip through a link on the pop up window that comes up when you start MSN. And the headline was something like " Clint Eastwood, also cool in real life"

As i said earlier i don't have the clip but would like to have it.

Sylvester, if you ever find it, please, please come back and tell us where you found it.

Was the woman doing the interview Swedish or English, do you remember?

And are you SURE it was Clint? Because to repeat it once more: Clint does not smoke, except in the movies. And I have never seen him smoking in a televised interview.

Almost a year on since I posted that and nothing has changed, plenty of guests still looking at this topic, but we haven't solved the mystery yet.

Found an article about this supposed Clint Eastwood cigarette trick on the Norwegian broadcaster NRK's website the other day.
The journalist claimed he remembered that this cigarette trick happened on a Letterman show. He contacted a Letterman producer, who could not remember such an event.

They also contacted Stina Dabrowski (former TV host in Sweden, who was mentioned earlier in this thread). She claimed that Eastwood was a guest on the first episode of her live TV show "Halv 8" in 1992. During the show, Dabrowski swore on live TV due to technical difficulties, creating national headlines the next day (my comment: today, however, it is quite common to svear on Swedish TV, and they dont bleep). That's the main thing she remembers from that episode, she claims. She does not remember that Eastwood made a cigarette trick. However, she says that if he did do so, she would "quite surely" have remembered it today.

The show "Halv 8" has apparently not been preserved, not even in  the national archioves of Sweden.

According to a professor they interviewed, who specialises on "false memories", this appears to be a classic example of collective false memory (also because different people "remember" that the trick happened on different shows, etc.).

Thanks for posting, qwerty1234! I think this is the article you saw:

https://www.nrk.no/dokumentar/xl/den-forraederske-hukommelsen-1.13512390

The whole article is quite interesting, about how false memories can form in our brains ... and how they can be planted there, including those "collective false memories."

A nice tidbit: in the interview with Stina Dabrowski, she says they were so pressed for time before the broadcast that Clint drove her from the Grand Hotel to the studio on a motorcycle! Hmm, Clint was 62 at the time, and was basking in the great European reception for Unforgiven. Couldn't possibly be a false memory, could it? ;)

Can't resist posting this:
