Oh Dear.

I hate to say this but it looks so clunky I fear this may be a poor showing for Clint.

After such a run of excellent movies covering a wide subject matter I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

The trailer, the voiceover, the crowds it is just so predictable. I'm not sure any Hollywood director could handle this subject matter without coming unstuck.

Again I hope I'm wrong and I'll be first to sing it's praises if I am but I don't want Clint to sour such a great run of movies let alone jeapordise the release of Hereafter - where I think he will be on much stronger footing.

Feel free to tell me otherwise.

People who already saw it seem to be giving Invictus glowing reviews over on the IMDB

Could be publicity shills for the film.

I, for one, will wait to see the film myself before I form a judgment about its quality.

Just like you KC, I 've always done the same, even if , in some cases, I did not like the main actor or actress, or the plot of the film ... sometimes, I have been really surprised, in the good way of the surprise (I think of Angelina Jolie in "Changeling", for exemple.)

This is why I always go to see an Eastwood film the exact day of its diffusion on French screen THEN I read the critics, sharing them or not, and to me that is not important if someone else doesn't have the same feeling in front of a film.

I would take whatever is written on the IMDb with a huge grain of salt. At one time the IMDb and the USENET group rec.arts.movies where it originated consisted primarily of true fans of cinema. Unfortunately, extreme fanatical supporters and detractors have taken over the majority of the discussions.

I've moved a few posts out of this thread and into a new one titled "INVICTUS: Reviews and Features in the Media." You'll find it here:

http://www.clinteastwood.org/forums/index.php?topic=8116.0

From now on, this is where "regular" reviews and features in the media should be posted.

I've also started another thread for awards news and rumors (leading off with one of Dan Dassow's, formerly in this thread):

Thanks, stuckonlife! I've quoted your post in the thread about the Museum of the Moving Image tribute, and I've added an excerpt from the Variety article to the "Reviews and Features in the Media" thread for Invictus.

:)  " Captains of our souls: Mace Neufeld teams with Clint Eastwood on Mandela drama 'Invictus' "

Nov 30, 2009 -By Daniel Eagan

 http://www.filmjournal.com/filmjournal/content_display/news-and-features/filmmakers/e3ieb5bac4c91e0ce36cb7bf5460268cfe6?imw=Y

Quote
In a career that spans over 35 years, producer Mace Neufeld says he never completed a film as quickly and easily as Invictus. Based on the book Playing the Enemy by John Carlin, and directed by Clint Eastwood, the Warner Bros. release shows how South African President Nelson Mandela used the 1995 World Cup rugby championships to help counteract the lingering effects of apartheid. Starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, the film is opening in the United States in December in time for Oscar consideration.

Neufeld attributes his success as a producer to perseverance and luck, but the march of Invictus from script to screen is a story of networking as well. Screenwriter Anthony Peckham had worked on another Neufeld project, a remake of the John Frankenheimer thriller Seconds. Neufeld knew Freeman from producing The Sum of All Fears, a 2002 adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel. Freeman saw an opportunity to involve Clint Eastwood, having worked with the actor and director on the Oscar-winning Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. And because Freeman already knew Mandela from researching the political activist and leader's autobiography The Long Walk to Freedom, he was able to fly to South Africa to get the politician's personal blessing for Invictus. Neufeld shares producer credit on the project with Lori McCreary, Freeman's producing partner at  Revelatons Entertainment, and Malpaso Prods. partners Eastwood and Robert Lorenz.
Quote
Production took place entirely in South Africa, primarily in Cape Town but with some scenes shot in Johannesburg. As for working with Eastwood, Neufeld exclaims, "If I had Clint directing all of my films, I probably could have done twice as many. He's fast. He knows what he wants. The actors show up totally prepared and they do their stuff in at most three or four takes."

Over the years, Neufeld has worked with numerous directors, from veterans to newcomers. More than Eastwood's speed, Neufeld was impressed by his command of the material. "Working with Clint is unique. He's a very judicious filmmaker. He has it all in his head, he knows what he's looking for, and he trusts his crew," he observes. "And the key members of the crew have worked with him for ten or twelve years in some cases. They know what's expected. You're never waiting for them. Clint would stand next to the camera operator, Steve Campanelli. After a take, he would turn and say, 'How is it, Campy? You happy?' Campy'd say, 'I got it all,' and Clint would tell the others, 'Good, let's move on.' Really, that's how you want it done."

Although he can consult a half-dozen wireless monitors on the set, Eastwood doesn't use video recording. By avoiding video playback, he can save 60 to 90 minutes a day. But that leaves little margin for error, especially since the negative was processed in California. Neufeld for one wasn't worried. "Unless the lab reported something wrong with what was shot, there really wasn't much of a need to look at dailies." He adds, "Everyone was smiling on this production."

Usually I don't like to look at any material related to Clint upcoming movies until I have an idea of when it will open here. It's scheduled to open January, 29 so I think I can handle take a look at some pictures.

They look great, I'm looking forward to watch it. :)

I am probably less interested in this film than I have been since any Eastwood project since The Bridges of Madison County. That being said, I often suffer from too high expectations, and I hope that my lowered interest will increase my enjoyment of this ambitious film. I am, however, looking forward to seeing how Eastwood handles a more uplifting story. Given his recent output, I thought he had lost interest in the sunnier side of the human condition.

Also, a request for those in the US that will see the movie this week. Please keep an eye out for me and the missus!!

All being well, we will (hopefully) be seen as the final rugby match is played. My wife and I are in a pub with the players wives watching the game on TV. We are wearing costumes as per my Avatar although I'm wearing a green cap too.

As I won't get to see the film until the 24th I'd be most grateful to know if we actually made the cut.  ;)

Does anyone think there are likely to be anything you could call "spoilers" for this movie, or can we have a single thread for members' reactions and reviews this time?
