Hi, Adam, hope you don't mind that I merged this with a similar topic that was already open.

In my mind, neither The Beguiled nor Paint Your Wagon is a Western, but by all means ... for those of you who like to rank 'em, rank away!  8)

My list changes from time to time

THE GREAT
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly -maybe the best movie period
For a Few Dollars More- sometimes places higher than TGTBATU depending on mood
Unforgiven - the best acting and story but no smile when its over
High Plains Drifter - can't turn off if even passed on P&S TV with commercials
The Outlaw Josey Wales - a great opening, many good lines
A Fistful of Dollars - simply great, can move up the list

THE OK
Two Mules for Sister Sara - interest twist the first time u see
Pale Rider - the first clint movie i saw

THE BAD
Joe Kidd
Hang 'em High

This is a cool old thread. I'd say my list is still the same, but I have to admit I haven't watched Unforgiven, Josey Wales or GBU recently to know which I like best. Of the westerns, I still don't own Two Mules or Joe Kidd on DVD. Maybe I oughta get to that sometime. Especially Mules, which I'd still rank higher than Pale Rider and Hang 'em High (two movies I do have on DVD ???).

My (new) ranking would be as follows:

1. High Plains Drifter
2. Pale Rider
3. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
4. The Outlaw Josey Wales
5. For a Few Dollars More

As this ranking seems not to be mainstream, it calls for e few additional comments:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is by far the best film in the list, but I consider it more an Eli Wallach western than a Clint Eastwood western.

Unforgiven is an entertaining movie, but is lacks the magic of my favourites.

I dislike Hang 'm High for the elaborate and explicit public execution scenes. It was my first Clint Eastwood movie and it took many years before I tried another one, which turned out to be GBU. I came across GBU on television. It 'turned my world upside down'.

For some reason, the majority of you liked Unforgiven best, but I didn't like the part he played as much as some of the others. I wish he was just a little bit more like his early western films. Tough, without a care in the world. You knew he never was worried about anybody.
I'm sure I will have my doubters?

1. High Plains Drifter O0

2. The Outlaw Josey Wales
3. Pale Rider
4. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
5. Hangem High
6. Two Mules for Sister Sarah

I was , how can I say it, "wrong"...
I watched Unforgiven last night, and I will move it up my list. I liked it a bit better for some reason, and other than him getting his you know what kicked by Hackman, he toughened up at the end and played the ruthless cowboy, they we all have known to love...
I would still put it behind the top 3, but I like it better than The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Hangem High.
My bad, but I am afraid, I still am a fan of the other 3 more...

I know, I know. . . .  you're scratching your head about Unforgiven and how it could be down that low, much less below Two Mules.   What can I say.  Two Mules amuzes me, and parts of Unforgiven bother me.
