Crikey, Wednesday was brutal. Got up for work at 4am and its 30 degrees already. It was the hottest night on record. It reached 42 by the time I left work in the afternoon before a southerly change blew in and cooled things down.

2016 was the hottest year on record. The New York Times featured this graphic on its front page today (I can only link to it, because it combines text with the image):

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/01/18/science/earth/2016-hottest-year-on-record.html

From the accompanying story:

Quote
Marking another milestone for a changing planet, scientists reported on Wednesday that the Earth reached its highest temperature on record in 2016, trouncing a record set only a year earlier, which beat one set in 2014. It is the first time in the modern era of global warming data that temperatures have blown past the previous record three years in a row.

The findings come two days before the inauguration of an American president who has called global warming a Chinese plot and vowed to roll back his predecessor’s efforts to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases.

In reality, the Earth is heating up, a point long beyond serious scientific dispute, but one becoming more evident as the records keep falling. Temperatures are heading toward levels that many experts believe will pose a profound threat to both the natural world and to human civilization.

In 2015 and 2016, the planetary warming was intensified by the weather pattern known as El Niño, in which the Pacific Ocean released a huge burst of energy and water vapor into the atmosphere. But the bigger factor in setting the records was the long-term trend of rising temperatures, which scientists say is being driven by increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

February is always the hottest month here and this week is a scorcher. 35°C yesterday, 38°C today, 40°C tomorrow. A couple of lower temps on Tuesday and Wednesday before heating up towards the end of the week and next weekend with it close to 40°C again.

The heat never bothered me as a kid but now it knocks the sails right outta me.

We're expecting a little snow tomorrow ... 8 to 12 inches, starting around the morning rush. And I just got the word:

That's great, KC! I still enjoy it when I get snow days. We just got a little last night though. The funny thing is that Tuesday it was around 60 degrees F. and then yesterday we got snow. :D

Yeah, it was 60° F or more on Wednesday here too, and now it's in the 20s. The snow has about stopped in the city. I'm going out for a walk later on. I think we got between 8 and 12 inches, though it doesn't look like that much out my window. The way the Governor is going on about it on the window, you'd think it was Snowpocalypse Now.

Times Square, early this morning:

To be fair, it was just after the snow started.

There are some great pictures gathered from social media here:

Better pics, but yours will be better than those.

Very cold and windy here in TN today, but no snow. We had the 60's yesterday also, and then down to the 20's last night. It's currently 35. The trees had started to bloom thinking it was Spring.

I always get a giggle when the Brits complain about the heat. What is it? High 20's or something?

Ok, maybe not quite the hottest place in the world :) but God it feels it.. It's the longest run of this heat here since our famous summer of 76..
