Quote
MUSTAPHA: Callahan, you're on the wrong side.

HARRY: How do you figure that?

MUSTAPHA: You go out there and put your ass on the line for a bunch of dudes who wouldn’t let you in the front door any more than they would me.

HARRY: I don’t do it for them.

MUSTAPHA: Who then?

HARRY: You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.

Who do you think Harry was referring to?

I don't know, but have always wondered.  I'm sure some of you have the answer, and I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, I wanted to know that too. In the first movie, Dirty Harry, when asked a similar question (why he keeps in the police business) he said "I don't know, I really don't". So since he is kind of different now, he must have the answer already.

I don't know...I think he does it for himself ???

I wouldn't mind not knowing, cause then I can fill it in myself.

I think in this case, whatever it is you say he is referring to is pretty much just filling in the blank. This is a really good question, though, and not one that I'm sure how I would answer myself.

Does The Enforcer have a commentary track on the new DVD? I wonder if anybody's ever talked about Harry's motives.

I always thought that Harry meant, "I don't do it for my superiors, I don't do it for the masses, I do it for myself because it is the right thing to do and it has to be done." There weren't going to be many with that attitude and he figured that Mustafa would doubt those motives.

After Harry broke the liquor store, Digiorgio asks him (not the exact lines): "Why someone becomes a cop?" and Harry replies "If you find out, let me know". He is just kidding but later, during his conversation with Mustafa, he says things like "I don’t do it for them" and "you wouldn’t believe me if I told you".

I think he really just doesn't know... There's no reflection about it. Since his wife died he has just dedicated his life to the police business... ???
I know some fans seem don't want or mind knowing the answer, but I still do. :)

My thoughts are he does it for himself.

In the original Dirty Harry we hear him say to a question as to why he stays in the force, and he replies that he really doesn't know.

In Magnum Force we see where he lives. A tiny little apartment with hardly any food in the refrigerator. The man is a loner ever since his wife was killed.

In The Enforcer Kate asks Harry at one point as to why he isn't married with a bunch of kids, to which he replies, "Nobody in their right mind is asking."

I couldn't really see Harry juggling life on the force and being a family man as well. The man is married to the job. That's probably why he stays in it, he doesn't know anything else and he is good at it and gets results, even if sometimes they're a little unconventional.

In the novelisation, it mentions that Harry and his wife used to socialise with the DiGiorgio's, but since the death of Harry's wife, Frank and Irene are always trying to set Harry up with one of their friends which Harry always hates.

Also when Harry tells Kate that he doesn't like to get too close to his partners, I think you could say that he doesn't really like getting too close to anyone. That probably comes across to some people as not liking them, as DiGiorgio says in Dirty Harry, "Harry hates everyone." It's probably not true, it just comes across that way.

You make some very good points of which I agree.

I felt Harry was saying he does it for himself. It is better not to know then you can form your own opinion.

I think Harry enjoys being a cop.  That's why he does it.  And he's good at it, and someone has to be out there fighting for the victim.

This is just a related tid bit, but I was watching a "Rawhide" episode recently, "Incident West of Lado," that reminded me of "The Enforcer."  Mr. Favor asked Rowdy to get the spare wheel from Wishbone's wagon and Wishbone confronted him.   Rowdy wouldn't give any information and Wishbone asks where he was taking it.  Rowdy replied, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you"  with the same delivery as in "The Enforcer."
