This is a condensed version of an article that appeared in
Positif quite a while back ... in 1994, to celebrate the mag's 400th number. It was published in English in 1995, in a work titled
Projections 4 1/2 (London: Faber and Faber), which essentially translated the entire special issue of
Positif. The theme was "Film-makers on film-making," and there's lots of interesting reading there.
