Woah, that last link is a heartbreaker. This is the first I've heard of it, and yes... a more fitting tribute would have been needed. I'll do my best. Prince has died at the age of 57. I had to check a few sources to make sure this wasn't an internet prank. He's one of the greatest of my generation. When Purple Rain came out in 1984, I went with a group of friends to see the movie. I still remember thinking it was "the greatest movie I'd ever seen", which is ridiculous... it's really not a good movie. I was reacting to the way the music swept me away, and the emotional depth of the ending song. https://www.youtube.com/v/W8O0Wy5YRb4(It seems all the videos of Purple Rain are purged regularly from YouTube, so this one may not stay up long, and it's not an official video, but it sounds great.) These are some beautiful lyrics: I never meant to cause you any sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I only wanted to one time to see you laughing I only wanted to see you Laughing in the purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain I only wanted to see you Bathing in the purple rain
I never wanted to be your weekend lover I only wanted to be some kind of friend Baby, I could never steal you from another It's such a shame our friendship had to end
Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain I only wanted to see you Underneath the purple rain
Honey, I know, I know I know times are changing It's time we all reach out For something new, that means you too
You say you want a leader But you can't seem to make up your mind I think you better close it And let me guide you to the purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain If you know what I'm singing about up here C'mon, raise your hand
Purple rain, purple rain I only want to see you Only want to see you In the purple rain He was an artist. As a songwriter, he could write gorgeous music like the above, and "When Doves Cry", some of the greatest dance music fo the 1980's "1999" and some pretty risque stuff too. He took chances. He reinvented himself with every song, and every album. He could play guitar like Jimi Hendrix. He was a rock god. He also stood up against corporate influence in music, hating that his very name had become a product. He changed his name to a symbol (the symbol of love) at the height of his career... and if you needed to speak it, he was to be called "The artist formerly known as Prince." I saw him in concert for the Purple Rain tour at the Philadelphia Spectrum ( Rocky fans will recognize that from where the big fight between Rocky and Apollo was held). Security was lax, and my friend and I managed to get down to the first level, and all the way down to the side of the stage. And what a concert it was. Rest in peace, Prince. You will be missed a lot.
