Prolific character actor Robert Forster, who died Oct. 11, belied F. Scott Fitzgerald’s observation that “there are no second acts in American lives.” After working steadily in films and television for 30 years, his career had bottomed out with the likes of 1989’s Satan’s Princess. That is, until Quentin Tarantino cast him in his Oscar-nominated role as bail bondsman Max Cherry, who becomes in thrall to Pam Grier’s title character in Jackie Brown.[/i]

The Times had a nice writeup on Larsen ... forever remembered as a Yankee, and for that one game in in 1956, though he played for the Yankees for only five years of his 14-year career.

Gant will probably be especially interested in this New York Times obituary of Neil Pert:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/10/arts/music/neil-peart-dead.html

Quote
“His drumming was songwriting,” Foo Fighters’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, said during Rush’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. “It was just as musical, just as melodic, as any other instrument in the band.” He also noted that Mr. Peart had “spawned a generation of air drummers for decades to come.”

So sad.  Just learned of this.  My brother introduced me to Monty Python when we were kids.

RIP Terry Jones. Life of Brian is one of my all-time favorite movies, and top 3 favorite comedies.

As for Kobe ...

I spent 20 years rooting against him and the Lakers, but his death has hit hard. I'm not even sure I know exactly why. I guess because you feel like a guy is always going to be around and because he seemed nearly indestructible, even when he tore his Achilles, because he always came back. And he really had just entered the prime of his life. Not as an athlete, of course, but as a person, as an ambassador of the game, a promoter of women sports, a father, a husband, and an inspiration. He was always flawed, as a player and a person, but he was always  more driven than just about anybody who's ever played sports, harder working, more focused, and totally fearless. I'm still in shock and I still can't believe it. It doesn't sound right even saying he died. And that his daughter died too just makes this all the more tragic. I feel really terrible for his family and the families of all those killed in this crash.

The Times ran its obituary on the front page. It's a good read.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/05/movies/kirk-douglas-dead.html

It includes a tribute video by A.O. Scott: https://nyti.ms/36WORXe

R.I.P., Kirk Douglas.
