I never quite got why there'd alway be a crowd to see a hanging. I mean if you were related to the person killed, you'd want to see the person responsible pay for it, but everyone else?

It's not something I'd like to go see.

There wasn't much else around in the way of mass entertainment.

I think public executions were supposed to be "edifying." The idea was that law abiding citizens would see what could happen to them if they strayed from the straight and narrow.
