Just a bit more info on the release date:
Quote
Warner Bros has set the Clint Eastwood-directed Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer J Edgar for a limited release on Wednesday, Nov. 9, with a wide release set for two days later. Eastwood produced with Imagine partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and Robert Lorenz.

Looks like there has been a change of date for J. Edgar

Obviously November is more of the time frame for potential award nominees.

No Clint for TIFF this year
August 08, 2011 by: Peter Howell

Call off the bloodhoods -- Clint Eastwood isn't coming to TIFF next month, and neither is J. Edgar, his biopic of founding FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

The film is apparently also not going to TIFF's east coast rival, the New York Film Festival. The two fests last year managed to share the glory -- and dual Clint visits -- for Hereafter, Eastwood's previous film.

Word has it that Eastwood and Warner Bros. have decided to skip the fall festival circuit altogether, instead going directly to theatres with Eastwood's probe into the ultimate G-Man.

J. Edgar is scheduled for a Nov. 9 limited release (Toronto included), followed by a wide release Nov. 11. ....

Hmm, that doesn't sound good ... we've gotten used to seeing Clint's films premiere at one of the fall festivals. Doesn't Warners have any faith in the most handsome male cast ever?

I totally disagree and was hoping for this move.None of his latest films won nothing more than a festival participation. If I recall correctly MDB was treated the same way....

The recent posts here about whether or not J. Edgar would play the Toronto or New York Film Festivals reminded me of this recent article, which discussed some of the TIFF films and their Oscar hopes:

Quote
The only exception to these suspicions is Clint Eastwood, who may well have the Closing Night of NYFF with J. Edgar, then release the film Nov 9, and get away with it. He’s Clint F-ing Eastwood, man.

http://moviecitynews.com/2011/08/6-weeks-to-tiff-a-20-weeks-to-oscar-prequel-part-3-of-3/

So maybe the most handsome men in Hollywood will get their day on the festival circuit after all :)

I can't recall if we've seen an official synopsis yet, but if not here it is from the Warner Bros. fall/holiday preview press kit:

Quote
"J. Edgar" explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century. As the face of law enforcement in America for almost fifty years, J. Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio) was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.

Alas, no stills or trailer yet.

Entertainment Weekly's Fall Preview includes this new first look image which is an official photo of DiCaprio delivering a Hoover speech.

Oops, I had started to post, then I left for a while, then came back and finished my post ... but when I went to submit it I got that "Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted," and what do you know, Dan has posted the same news I was going to "scoop" everyone with. Oh well, here's the post anyway:

Entertainment Weekly's annual Fall Movie Preview issue is out today (issue date Aug. 19/26) ... on p. 63 there's a full-page blurb on J. Edgar by Anthony Breznican. Here's a bit with a quote from Clint:

Quote
Historians have found no definitive proof about Hoover's sexuality. "He was a very private person, so nobody knew too much about him," says Eastwood. "He and Tolson were kind of inseparable pals, so there was always the rumor that he was gay. Whether he was or not, I don't know. In the picture, we leave that up for the audience to decide." One thing is certain, though: "He knew what he could do to everybody else by finding out what their life was like."

And here's the pic as it appears in the magazine ... with the inevitable "Oscar buzz" in the corner:

It is really hard to get a scoop when many of us have Google alerts for "Clint Eastwood", "J. Edgar" and related matters.

The quote from Mr. Eastwood certainly increases my already hightened interest in this film.

Well, my scoop was going to be from the printed magazine, since I know the content isn't usually on the Web for a week. And that's true, at least as regards the text!

Reading that quote, it seems as though the film is going to be mainly about his career and not his private life and those rumours.

Right... hadn't there been some news bit about the actors kissing? Or am I completely mis-remembering that? :D

I remember reading something about Leo kissing another man but it doesn't look as though we're going to see it, if it's up to the audience to decide whether Hoover was gay?
