This is not well publicized information, but since this is the Clint Eastwood web board, and we are all such huge Clint Eastwood fans, I thought I would give you all the inside scoop. J. Edgar is scheduled to be shown at the Carmel Art and Film Festival on October 14th, 2011. You won't find this news anywhere, including on the Carmel Art and Film Festival website, but I spoke to someone at the festival and she confirmed to me that J. Edgar will be showing there. The powers that be do not want to call this a premiere, as the film is officially premiering at AFI a few weeks later, but I do believe that it is the first time J. Edgar will be shown anywhere.

I am going. I live in San Diego but am planning on flying up to Carmel to see the film. If anyone else would like to go and would like to meet up, I'm going to be there. There are an array of options for ticket prices. The lowest price ticket that you can purchase that will allow you to see J. Edgar is $245. There is a one day pass, but that only allows you to see movies during the day and J. Edgar is premiering at night. This $245 will allow you to see any movie, I believe, throughout the course of the festival, so the ticket is not just for J. Edgar. It is for the festival as a whole.

The next price option is $545. Clint Eastwood is usually not in attendance for the duration of the festival. He is usually only there for one day, which this year is going to be the 14th. Him and his wife Dina will also be presenting a filmmaking award at the festival, also on the 14th. I asked the lady I spoke to about the possibility of meeting Eastwood if I were to attend the festival, and she said that there is an event that he goes to where he has often met fans and taken pictures. She said the best chance of meeting him would be to go to that event, and the only way to go to that event is to pay the $545. She told me she couldn't promise that he would do that this year, but in years past, she said that he has, and that he is pretty approachable. I am going to see the film, but am hoping I'll finally be able to meet and take a picture with Eastwood! That would be wonderful.

On the whole, the lady I spoke to was pretty helpful. She also told me that Clint and Dina are enthusiastic about J. Edgar. She said they weren't that enthusiastic about "Hereafter," but that this one and "Gran Torino" they were excited about. She also told me that the first Clint ever heard about Beyonce being pregnant was when he was watching the VMA awards with his wife! I found that to be pretty shocking. If I were Beyonce, I would have told him that she wouldn't be able to do the film on the schedule they had agreed on!

A few more things--she said Clint and Dina liked "Letters from Iwo Jima" a lot better than "Flags of Our Fathers." For what it's worth, she also told me Eastwood is pretty comfortable the way things are behind the camera and that she doesn't think Eastwood will ever act again.

The link to the Carmel Art and Film Festival and the price options are as follows: http://carmelartandfilm.eventbrite.com/

If any of you would like to go, I would recommend booking the ticket as soon as possible. I had a difficult time finding a hotel in the area to stay.

I hope you all enjoy this inside information.

Sounds like a nice conversation with a very Eastwood-knowledgeable woman!

Definitely live it up and take advantage of that pass, AKA!

Thanks for the inside information, AKA. Good luck on getting to meet Eastwood!

The link to the festival itself is:

... and to the "Special Evening with Clint Eastwood":

It seems odd they haven't posted a schedule yet. Clint's appearance at the festival was noted here:

I think the most shocking revelation is that Clint and Dina were allegedly watching the MTV VMA awards (live, no less) :)

Sounds like an awesome event, have fun AKA23!

The festival schedule has now been announced, and J. Edgar will indeed screen at 7:00 on October 14 at Sunset Center Auditorium:

Still no running time?

It's gotta be close to 2 and half hours or more I reckon?

It's possible that this screening will be a "final tuneup" and that the actual final running time hasn't been determined yet.

But yeah, I'd imagine it'd be on the long side, given the subject matter and Clint's penchant for taking his time with a story.

The screenplay for Hoover that is available online is 118 pages long. The screenplay for Changeling is 139 pages long and has a running time of 141 minutes, approximately one minute per page. I would expect J. Edgar to have a final running time of around 118 minutes.

I just noticed that Higashimori actually already posted an item back on September 12 that included the information that J. Edgar would screen at this festival, here:

I just got off the phone with the Director of the Carmel Art and Film Festival. He told me that Clint Eastwood's editors are going to be there too speaking about the film, so I'll hopefully get to see that. I'm leaving on Thursday to go to Carmel. I am so excited! This is going to be great.

I'm going to take my computer with me on my vacation, so if I have wireless Internet at the hotel, which I may or may not, I'm not staying in an expensive hotel, I'll be sure to update all of you on the board!

AKA, I also hope you have a great time. Be sure to watch out for the Old fashioned movie tone news style cameraman played by our own Palooka in J. Edgar.

If time and finances permit, be sure to check out Hog's Breath Inn Restaurant,  the Monterey Fish House, the Monterey Aquarium and the 17 Mile Drive.

All three will be present at the screenings of new movies they have directed and/or written, as well as participate in a number of film-related activities taking place over the four-day, multiple-art exposition held in and around downtown Carmel.
