Title: Beatles or Elvis
Post by: GBU on November 03, 2005, 08:56:35 PM
The question for Pulp Fiction. Are you a Beatles or Elvis fan? I'm an Elvis fan, just because I grew up listening to the music, my Dad was a HUGE fan.

Yes he did  Wooden Heart.    There were a few verses in German recorded while he was serving out there.

Ooops!  :D Never heard that one. Thanks, Lin!

Of course, I was joking with KC considering how much she enjoyed hearing the Beatles sing "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand".  ;)

Obviously it's The Beatles for me.

I also like Elvis, but I've never grown a passion for his music. But, Christmas isn't Christmas until I put Elvis's Christmas CDs in the deck.

I've never been an Elvis fan.  I do have a few Beatles CDs that sometimes make the rotation for the player in my office, so I'll go with them.  Sadly, I admit to liking mostly their mainstream stuff and don't even recognize 90% of the tracks listed in the Survivor thread.

On the road right now...I was planning to skim through to find some underrated favorites.  Partly so I don't come across a maintreamer...You know, "Revolution rocks, its their best song!" type of guy...and partly because I wouldn't mind unearthing an old gem that I had passed over.

theres no question who was more musically talented, the beatles all wrote and recorded hit songs not just together but seperately, that said i'm siding with elvis, i just love his early rock and roll stuff along with his vegas days he'd a tremendous voice, but like most singers way back in the 50's he didn't write half the stuff he's credited with, the colonel was a great manager working out deals that involved crediting elvis on the songs
(you could have 50& creit and royalties on your own song and have elvis sell millions of copies all overthe world, or it could rest on the shelf til someone recorded it and you would get 100% of the royalties for a couple of thousand sales.)

I'm sticking with Elvis as the question is who do you prefer, but you have to admit musically the beatles were way ahead in their talent, i just don't think any beatle had a voice to match Elvis'

Matt I can't find Elvis singing Wooden Heart but HERE (http://www.barb-coolwaters.com/e001/woodenheart.html) is a link to the song.    At least they have printed the German words. :)

I agree it isn't Elvis's best by any means.   No I can't hear it as I don't have the right plug in for it. :)   I can still cringe without hearing it again.  I well remember when it came out.

You gotta laugh when you hear that song.  :)

Not many people in the pop world do have a voice to match Elvis', or someone like Johnny Cash, who did write a lot of his own music.  Still, John Lennon has got to be my favorite male singer just because there's so much edge and grittiness and honesty in the way he sings, and he has that quintessential rock sound to the way he sings, so even when he does a ballad you think, "That's a great rock and roll singer."

Yeah, The Beatles all the way for me.

Hey, and not that many people in the pop world have a voice like Ringo's either.... :D :D :D

Amen brother!  O0

Beatles or Elvis, huh?  What about Pee Wee Herman??!!

Just kidding.  It's Elvis for me, I'm a huge fan.  Not the hokey kind, either; you have a question regarding his career-I'm your man!  I'm a realist-his movies (most) were stupid and he IS dead.

I LOVE The Beatles, though.  I can't begin to describe how GREAT they were!  What a variety they provided in the short time they were together.  What talent, innovation and creativity!  Incredible!  Delightful!  Joyous!  ....ok, ok, so I just described!  8)

So as not to confuse, yes, Elvis is #1 with me.  Sometimes I can't even explain why.  Something in the way he performed moves me (ahem, to paraphrase George Harrison...) like no other.

If I were stranded on an island with just 2 cds, I'd choose "ELV1S: 30 #1 HITS" and The Beatles' "1".  Paradise, Hawaiian style!  ;)

That's how I feel too. He may not have the greatest voice ever recorded, but he's my favorite male rock singer for those same reasons.

Elvis by a mile . Yes The Beatles wrote their own songs and they are arguably the best pop band ever but they just don't have the appeal of " The King " for me anyway
Let's not forget without Elvis we might not have had The Beatles  .
The only real talent in the band was Lennon & McCartney .The others were just lucky to be along for the ride .
It might be a tough call for some but I've got to go with my gut ( no pun intended ) and go for Elvis .

If The Beatles came first, would you still vote for Elvis? ::)

To me, it doesn't matter whether an artist wrote their own material or not.  I'm a big fan of Sinatra's and, correct me if I'm wrong, he also did not write his own songs.  Yet, he's considered the greatest singer of all time.

I don't think it really matters who came before the other.  The fact remains that the The Beatles and Elvis are 2 of the most talented and successful artists of all time, who continue to inspire.

So what really matters?  To me it's to what degree I'm entertained.  All 3 of the artists I just mentioned are above and beyond GREAT.

Agreed.... Some artists are just beyond great. Beatles, Presley, Sinatra.... all on a whole other plain from most others.... and I couldn't pick between them. All just as vitale and important in their own way.

I guess for me one of the main differences between em is that very often (granted, not always.. but nearly) when Elvis or Sinatra record a song.. it becomes thee definitive version. Often copied but rarely betterd.

Wheras with The Beatles... Although I love a lot of their records.. they were supreme song writers and I do sometimes  prefer hearing their songs by other notable artists, such as   Aretha Franklin.

Please totally ignore the above statement with regards to Sinatras efforts with "Something". Try as he might he never quite nailed that one..... :o ;)

What's funny is I used to HATE Sinatra!  I used to think Elvis' version of My Way was THE best version.  Fortunately, I came around and enjoy listening to Ol' Blue Eyes frequently.  I still like Elvis' version of My Way better (not by much  ;)), but Sinatra's version is quintessential.  Interestingly, Elvis' studio version of that song didn't see the light of day until 1995; understandable, because it's horrible.  He performed it much better in concert.

aw god i hate sinatra, he's arguabley the best singer of the three Rat Pack singers, but i prefer dean martin and sammy davis jr, they were entertainers, sinatra was a singer. but my favourite lounge singer was Bobby Darin

Well, I think Ringo was the right drummer for the Beatles and Harrison, not only being a really good guitarist, wrote some exceptional songs, and even if you don't like songs like "Within You Without You" and "The Inner Light" those songs were ahead of their time and add something to the Beatle experience.  And within a group there has to be a chemistry among its members, and I think it's safe to say that existed.  With that said, yes they were lucky, just as John and Paul were lucky to have met each other, and we fans are lucky The Beatles existed at all.
