The Queensland Police Service advise Australian wildlife personality Steve Irwin has died.

It is believed Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a sting-ray at Batt Reef, Low Isle off Port Douglas about 11am. He had been filming a documentary.

After being stung by the sting-ray, his crew called for medical treatment and the Emergency Management Queensland Helicopter responded however Mr Irwin had died.

Mr Irwin’s family has been advised.

That is sad news.    Steve took so many chances with animals that could have attacked him.   A stingray is not normally aggressive, however the barb caught him in the heart.  He was larger than life and an ambassador for Australia's unique wildlife.   He will be sadly missed.

RIP Steve.

This is very sad news.

The first time I saw Steve Irwin was on the Discovery Channel years ago. I was so stunned by the things he did on that show that I wrote Discovery Channel and told them he was insane, but that I loved the show! They wrote me back in agreement... a very funny letter from them saying they knew he was crazy, but a great guy. It didn't take long for him to become a household name. The kids really love his shows on Animal Planet. I don't think we've missed one.

It was still a shock to me to see he died. Somehow, I just didn't expect it, even though it should have, could have, happened hundreds (thousands?) of times.

RIP Steve. You'll be missed.  :'(

This is very surprising and sad.

Like Matt, I first came across his show a few years back while flipping channels late at night. I saw a few moments of the show and had to watch more. I know he leaves behind his wife and a young child, I believe. :'(

Steve Irwin had a passion for wildlife and wild places.

He also very obviously loved his job!

I have not heard all the details of his death but it sounds like he died doing what he loved.

Safe journey Steve.

The news caught me off guard this morning. Strange thing is, he wasn't even flirting with the stringray or even aware of its presence nearby as far as I know. Could have happened to anybody. His cameraman was just feet away from him and was at just as much risk while filming.

Reminds me of the late great stuntman Dar Robinson, who always managed to cheat death doing what he did best, yet his life was taken from him as the result of a motorbike accident in the desert.

I was really sad to hear this. The guy was a legend. I suppose you could say at least he went out doing what he loved most. But still a great loss.
