Title: Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: D'Ambrosia on May 21, 2003, 07:23:16 PM
Alright, Nightwing gave me this idea in that other thread about Eastwoods Characters so why not have a character survivor...

The Man with No Name
Jed Cooper
Walt Coogan
Lt. Morris Shaffer
Pardner
Kelly
Hogan
John McBurney
Dave Garver
Harry Callahan
Joe Kidd
The Stranger
Thunderbolt
Jonathan Himlock
Josey Wales
Ben Shockley
Philo Beddoe
Frank Morris
Bronco Billy
Mitchell Gant
Red Stovall
Lt. Speer
Wes Block
The Preacher
Tom Highway
Tommy Nowak
John Wilson
Nick Pulovski
William Munny
Frank Horrigan
Red Garnett
Robert Kincaid
Luther Whitney
Steve Everett
Frank Corvin
Terrell McCaleb

Vote for two and will toss 'em off once every day at first, then every other day, then every four or five days...

My first two votes go to Pardner and Tommy Nowak....

Where are we putting them when they're thrown off, D'amb?  Can't even put 'em in Alcatraz... Morris would get out and be back in the lineup.

Okay, okay... I'll make it MY avatar.  You can change yours back.  Change the URL name in your profile to "paint" instead of "wagon".  The rest is the same.

That was fun... even if it only lasted 20 minutes.  ;D

Well I am all for pardner.

Who I am not for are William Munny and that daft name from The Rookie.

I have always had a problem with Mr Munny and although I will be the only person voting for him, he has to go. (as far as I am concerned)

Well, I got off work at 10:45 and went to the video store to get Where Eagles Dare for my next Clint's Gun comparisson and the mo-fos didn't have it ???   I got  Repo Man instead and I'm watching it right now.  Pretty funny...  I couldn't believe how this thread took off in that span of time... :o

What's funny is I remember my Dad being a Paint Your Wagon fan and watching it with him when I was like 7 or something and rembemer thinking to myself "I hate musicals.....They Suck!!!!"

Watcing Paint Your Wagon Is like watching Jesus Christ Super Star a total cringe fest....

The only musicals I ever liked were "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Dancing Lady".
"Paint Your Wagon" is my least favorite Clint movie, but Clint's character isn't the reason.

Jonathan Hemlock  (Spelt wrong in the initial post D'Ambo  :-[ ) & Philo Beddoe.

Not because they are the worst, just I don't want to see them doing well.

It's surely gonna come down to Munny, MWNN and Harry in the end?  Eh?

McCaleb was one of the most boring characters Eastwood has ever portrayed.  Since when do you have to LIKE a character to recognize how great a character is?

And the performances are a world apart.  McCaleb gets a C-, one of the worst, in my opinion.  Whereas Kincaid gets an A+++... easily within the very best performances Eastwood has ever given.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: D'Ambrosia on May 22, 2003, 10:17:55 PM
Acting Performances are one thing but interesting characters are another.  McCaleb was an interesting character to me because his past, heart transplant, motivations and soforth...  Kincaid is just a photagrapher for National Geograpic who likes to have affairs with married women.  Much more character in McCeleb than Kincaid, in my opinion.  Acting performance, sure blewed McCeleb away, but this is character survivor not acting performce survivor... ;)
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: Matt on May 22, 2003, 10:40:05 PM
But the performances bring the characters to life.  I see that the performances and the quality/interesting traits of the characters are connected.  A great performance of a multi-dimensional character should last longer in this game than a mediocre performance of a less interesting character... no matter how much you actualkly LIKE the character.

Is this only a popularity thread then?  Who we like most?  I thought it was for the best characters.

Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: Matt on May 22, 2003, 10:49:35 PM
To illustrate my point... I wouldn't want to hang out and have dinner with Mitch Leary, but he's one helluva great character.  And the performance has a LOT to do with how great the character is. :)

Post by: philo on May 23, 2003, 02:12:45 AM

Well Matt ,

It is quite easy to say all that about McCaleb but in my case William Munny gets more on my nerves going on I don't know how many times about how his wife cured him, We know all that from the very start, I didn't need to hear it so many times, we did get the idea. I also didn't find the scenes where he thought he was dying very convincing either. If we are left with Munny in the top three then something is wrong somewhere .

Munny and Pulovski

Eastwood's performance as McCaleb was one thing that really made Blood Work interesting to me. His performance was actually quite good, it's in his facial expressions.

HAHA...cool comments, Philo. I disagree with all that stuff you said about Munny, but it made me laugh. It's interesting how different Clint fans can have such different opinions. I haven't seen Unforgiven in awhile though. You certainly have a humorous and interesting perspective on the character! :)

Ohh, I've been asked to join the game! Thanks D'Amb! :)

I agree with Matt on McCaleb, but I'm not SURE that he's the worst character and really deserves to be voted off at this stage. I wouldn't vote Kincaid off at this stage though either, D'Amb. Although I totally agree with you and Conan about the morality of it, so I'm kind of glad that other people see things my way on this issue and that I'm not the ONLY one.

For this one, I think I'm going to have to go with Pardner, even though I haven't seen the whole film, but what I did see, I really didn't like. Sorry Christopher :( if I need to pick another one, I'll do that later.

I kind of agree with Matt on McCaleb. Everything about Blood Work was terrible, and Eastwood's performance wasn't stellar, but one of the ONLY good things about the film was Eastwood. I'm not sure I want to vote it off at this early stage of the game. I'll have to think about it.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: D'Ambrosia on May 23, 2003, 09:33:46 AM
Yeah but Matt it's always been a popularity contest.  Look back to previous Survivor games.  The ones we want to win and do not.  I mean if you as an individual like one character more than another you are more than likely going to vote for that character because you like him not because he gave an outstanding performance.  I've got to separate the two.  Sure performance enhances character, but when the character doesn't enhance the performance, the character still might be more interesting.  We are talking about Eastwoods Characters not Eastwood performances as acting as the character.  I can guarantee that Harry will make it to the last couple of posts, but let's face it, His acting in the Enforcer blows the acting in Dead Pool away.  That's not going to have a bearing on how people vote.  They are going to vote for whom they like the best not how well Eastwood performing.  When we post up lists of Favorites about other Eastwood stuff in other threads I am always prone to post up two lists.  My Favorites and what I think are the best.  In the real survivor game the best are usually gone first because they seem threatening  to the other survivors.   I watched many a movie where the acting has sucked but the characters are very interesting.  Vote as you will.  That's the fun of the game, the diversity of opinions as Little bill would say  "I don't like assassins, or men of low character.  Well will Munny is a man of low character killing woman and children, but that's not going to stop people from refraining form voting him off  because he is popular (to movie audiences).   Your right in when you say the acting performance has a direct effect on how people perceive the character, but hey man this is Survival.  You've got to take the good with the bad and with the ugly.

I just think that some people are voting based on the movie he is in, not his performance.  But you dont have to have a reason, you just have to post up your opinion.... ;D

Next Eastwood Survivor:  Eastwoods acting performaces. (Just kidding  :D)

I think Will Munny might just be trying to convince himself that he's been cured. He ain't like that no more - but ain't he?

Oh man, say the words "but ain't he" out loud. Doesn't that sound just so silly?

Yes my tongue was slightly towards my cheek with those remarks, however I was amazed that people at least saw what I was trying to say. I don't hold these points really against the film or I would have aired them before now ..... but I have always seen it that way and to me it is a weakness.

I have seen Paint you wagon (with pardner) many more times than Unforgiven. I think it is bad that AKA (I Think) votes off pardner having only seen a bit of the film.

This is not as clear cut as the other game .

AKA, not everyone that's playing has seen all the movies.

Philo just doesn't want you voting against Pardner, that's all.  ;)

If the only people allowed to vote were the ones who had seen all the movies, I think we wouldn't have very much participation in this game.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: AKA23 on May 23, 2003, 04:09:43 PM
Well, okay Philo, but I don't WANT to support Pardner. What was good about that character? Maybe you can convince me.

D'Amb, it's an interesting point that you are making here. I don't have a firm view on this, but generally, I would think that if you felt the movie wasn't that great, then the character can't be that great either. If it isn't executed well, if it doesn't all connect, it's really very difficult to separate the actual "character" from the overall film, and the manner in which that character was portrayed on film. If it's a good character, then the film should be decent, and the character should work to enrich the film as a whole. If that isn't the case, then I don't think its a good character. I understand your separation of performance v. character, but I have a hard time separating the two. In order for it to be a good character in my mind, I have to enjoy the film that the character is in, the acting and the performance has to bring the character to life for me, it all has to come together. That's my opinion at least.

I know what you are saying though. For instance, I'd place Luther Whitney as a very interesting character, I happen to like the film, etc..but I'm sure many of our board members, not having liked the film, may overlook Luther Whitney as being a good character, when in fact, it's in my mind a very interesting, multi-layered Eastwood performance.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: Matt on May 23, 2003, 05:54:36 PM
There's a few characters that I think stand out as being far better than the movie they're in.  One example is Ben Shockley in The Gauntlet.  The film is good but the character is one of the best Eastwood's ever portrayed.

I actually think Mitchell Gant is a good character, but Firefox is one of my least favorite Eastwood films.  It's a good performance, and he's got some interesting characteristics and flaws that make him better than the film... which seemed very dull, to me.

In this case, I'd also say that Philo Beddoe is a better character than both of the Which Way films.  That's not a knock on the films (don't get on me for that, Philo), it's just that I think his character is really the best part of the film, and if I were to grade the film, it would get maybe a C, but the Beddoe character might get a B.

I can separate great characters from the films they're in, but I do have a little trouble separating great performances from great characters.  If a character is really written poorly, then no matter how great the performance is, there's just not gonna be much to be done with it.  However, for the most part, I think that Eastwood has chosen to play characters that are really interesting and multi-faceted, so then it really comes down to a combination of performance and the depth of the character.

Lt. Speer and Pardner then. I don't think that changes the outcome of the game, though. Sorry D'amb. Aren't there more for Mitchell Gant to go then Kincaid? Maybe not.

I thought KC might jump in to save Kincaid, but What's done is done.... If Philo would use his "missed" vote for Speer that would do it but that's not happening. as it stands:

Pardner is singing to the trees tonight.... GONE!

The run down:
Pardner:3
Kincaid:2
Speer:2

I will pass from here on in, there are too many characters left that are in a word " stiff ".

How Mc B can be voted off while Hogan, Highway and Whitney remain is ...... well have you seen these films lately ?

As for Philo, it is good to see Eastwood laugh and he certainly does that and a great many other emotions in between.

Sour grapes ? Maybe, but we don't have too many players in this game and now there is one less .

Whoa, Whitney's still around, huh?  Geez... he has to go NOW.

I only voted for McBurney in a defensive strategy to keep Block, since they had the same # of votes.  Why is Wes Block getting votes already?  He's one of the best characters!

I actually agree with Philo's three that he mentioned.  This time:  Whitney and Hogan (Highway will be next).

I like Billy... I'm not voting him off yet.

I have to confess that it`s been awhile since I saw The Beguiled but I remember that I did not like Clint`s character in this film.It could be that I would like it more now if I`ll see it again. ???
Hogan and Highway are on the other hand great(more likable)characters even if the films Two Mules For Sister Sara and The Heartbreakridge are not"masterpieces" .
Whitney?Yes this character should have been long gone.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: Matt on June 01, 2003, 05:47:59 AM
This brings us back to square one....  who do we try to keep?  The characters that are the most likeable, or the characters that are the best portrayed, most complex, and most interesting?

Sure McB isn't at the top of Eastwood's "likeable character" list, but he is at the top of all of the other criteria I listed.  Hogan, on the other hand, while likeable, is not.

I'm voting them off based more on the performance (sorry D'Amb, can't help it) and trying to keep those characters that are Clint's best performances and the most interesting and complicated of the bunch.  McB shouldn't have gone yet, but as I said, I'm trying to keep Block.  Anyone who hasn't seen Tightrope lately shouldn't even think of voting off Wes Block until the final rounds.

Very good point Matt. This voting could be more intresting if people write after the character`s name why they think he should be voted off.
I don`t care if somebody is voting some character of only because it`s not likable.I just want to know their reasons.

It's just a silly game not to be taken too seriously.   ::)

Vote off who you want to vote off, for any reason.  Be it strategy or because you do not like the character or you just don’t like his name. In this game it’s not necessary to defend your answers (but always fun to listen anyway).  I'm sorry to see some people quitting but if that's the way  they feel, so be it.  To each his own.

I agree that it would be interesting to listen to why people voted off a certain chartacter, but making it a requirment would certainly cut back on participants...

I didn't want to vote off the Preacher so soon, but sometimes you just got to bite the bullet and keep things moving...

Ya can't please everybody.
Title: Re:Eastwood Character Survivor
Post by: Matt on June 01, 2003, 09:24:51 AM
We take Survivor very seriously round here!  What's the point of playing if don't care about who wins or loses?  Sure, it's just a game, but so is the Superbowl!  ;D

I vote that everyone join back in the game, and see it to the end.

Who will be the sole survivor? Will it be Josey Wales again? Dirty Harry? The Man With No Name?  Or could Munny survive Philo's quest to have him blown away early and be the last man standing?  :o

Get mean about it if you want... harass other players for their choices.  Argue it out if you want... but in the spirit of competition and fun!  Keep the game goin', and may the best man win!  :D

I agree with D'Amb:
Quote
Vote off who you want to vote off, for any reason.
It's not so much that I don't like the character's I've been voting off, but I vote 'em whenever I take the notion to.

A character survivor is actually pretty interesting, because at times, even if I don't care as much for the movie, or if it isn't one of my favorites, chances are I'd still watch it because of Eastwood being in it.

(And I'm sure many of you have realized that I rarely speak badly about any Eastwood film)

I haven't been able to participate since the first round... but I'm glad to see that Bronco Billy is still around. :)

I'll vote off Highway, 'cause he reminds me too much of my father. Don't get me wrong, I love my father just don't want to see a character in a movie that has the same behavior as my dad.

I've been up against Conan's choices since about the sixth round or so... when he started trying to get rid of Billy and Block.   >:(  ;)

Man, once Stovall is gone, I really really really don't want to see anyone else cut.  I can't even decide a second name to give yet... these are all my FAVORITE characters.  I'm gonna have to wait later in this round to see who's looking to make the cut list before voting.

The game is getting hard... :-[

Well, in my humble opinion, all of Eastwoods characters are great.  So it’s really just a question of personal preference for me.  Sure he’s had characters not as well rounded as others, but they are long gone.

After the next round or two we’ll go down to one vote.

This hurts.  I'm basing this vote on how I judge the breadth of the characters that remain, how multi-faceted and well-developed the characters are, not how much I like them.

;D I know, it IS getting nasty.

I'll make my bid here... the two characters who have made and defined Eastwood are Man With No Name and Dirty Harry Callahan.  I'm aiming to get it down to them.

:)Geez, this is getting tough!  I vote for Josey Wales.  The Man With No Name is just too cool to vote off, and too much a part of the Eastwood story.  Dirty Harry doesn't have so much resonance for me personally, but is another defining Eastwood character, and I prefer the Munny persona to Josey's.  Sorry Josey...

I caught so much heat from Matt the last time I voted that I decided to try and make the right decision here.  And, it's hard.  But, I'm going to have to vote Dirty Harry off because, in my opinion, I don't think there would have ever been a "Dirty Harry" if The Man With No Name had not been so unique as to capture the attention of the American public.

Yes, you are the brave and lone voice of dissent, Christopher ;)

My question is, what does the winner have to do? Does he have to pick a roommate for the next week? Wait by a lake for his suitor to show up with a marriage proposal? Take off his poncho/badge? Reveal the fact that he really isn't a cowboy (or cop) at all, but a paltry construction worker?

Or worst of all, participate in a lame, badly choreographed song and dance review featuring a nostalgic look at the three runners up (say, Callahan, Munny, and Wales), who only left last week, performing a medley of Burt Bacharach songs while Carnie Wilson and Gladys Knight make out in a hot tub centerstage?

Come to think of it, I'd kind of like to see that. And I'll just bet that Munny has a surprisingly rich and sonorous baritone voice. But can he dance? Or will they all come crashing to ruin slipping on Josey's tobacco spit? Will Harry mistake Simon for Scorpio and step on his leg? Eat a hot dog?

Mr. Murdock, are you listening? :D
