Our new Webmaster, Richard, and a techie friend of his (Doug7410) have been working "behind the scenes" to upgrade the site and the Board. They have updated the Board software to the latest version, partly for security and spam prevention reasons. Unfortunately, some things inadvertently got changed along the way that shouldn't have been. You may have noticed some of these, though quite a few have already been fixed, and Richard and Doug are working hard to get everything back looking the same as before. Richard told us Mods:
Thanks for hanging in there. All should come back looking the same but with more features when we are done. Please keep providing feedback.
RJ
So we're starting a new thread for members to contribute feedback.
Among the biggest issues: you'll have noticed that the "smiley" buttons seem to have gone away from the reply box, though you can still make smileys by using the keyboard, like : and ) for a "plain" smiley, :) ... However, the smilies now look different too. Richard told us:
I put in quick patches to fix everything I think except the Smileys. Those Smileys are going to take more investigation.
So he's working on that.
Anything else you see that bothers you, please post here!
-
Among the biggest issues: you'll have noticed that the "smiley" buttons seem to have gone away from the reply box,
Also the other tags have disappeared too. Italics, bold, underline etc etc.
-
Please do post your problems here. Richard and Doug can only fix them if we let them know what is happening.
-
The pop up box that appeared when we had a PM is not happening now. :(
-
The stats page seems a little off too. Especially the top ten stats. Figures are out of alignment with names.
-
Being a stats sort of guy, one thing I've always liked doing is being able to check on my own previous posts and personal stats from my profile page. I noticed I can still do this on other people's profile pages, but not on my own.

I tried and had no problems. Can anyone other than a moderator check this out please?
-
Like Christopher I can see the stats and posts for other people, but not myself.
-
Several days ago when I wanted to post, I noticed a change and I was shocked! All I needed was gone!!
As I am not very good for.........I was lost! >・<! I hoped that it comes back as before but it seems that it does not !???
I'd like to try to used this change, but....>・<!!
-
Hang in there, I'm sure everything will be back to normal eventually.
-
Meanwhile, for those of you who are missing the icons for quotations and such things as italics, bold and underline, you can use the following tags instead.
I'll post them here with a space after the opening bracket. Delete that space and put the words you want italicized, quoted, etc., between the opening and closing tags.
Quotation: [ quote]
Italics: [ i]
Bold: [ b]
Underline: [ u]
To make a "titled" link, type [ url=] (without the space after the first bracket) Then, paste the URL after the equals sign. Then, type the title you want between the opening and closing tags.
-
If it's possible, I'd like the quoted material to be exactly under who posted it. At the moment, there is a space and it's a little to the right.
Such as:
Hang in there, I'm sure everything will be back to normal eventually.
-
^ I actually like that. It's "set off" from the rest of the post, like a block quote. Before, the quote box went all across the page.
I guess it would be better if the "Quote from" part could be set off too, but I can live with it the way it is now.
-
I would like to see the "Quote from" set above the quotation too.
Thank you KC for listing how to post bold, italics etc. It is fine for the moment, however I would like to see the smiley faces, bold, italics, changing colour of letters and size back in their old home.
-
Thanks for all the feedback! I'm rolling these fixes in as they come into the new server. Keep them coming!
The full fixset will come out next week. The Smileys and Font Options will be back. I apologize for the bad update.

Hi Richard,
It's looking good. Thank goodness the smilies are back!
Not all of the "old" smilies are right, however. These look the same as they always did:
;D :( ??? ::) :P :-* :'( >:D ^-^ O0
... but these are different:
:) ;) :D >:( :o 8) :-\
They're smaller, not animated and not as "expressive," at least I don't think so. Is there any way you can get the old ones back?
To the right of "thumbs up" O0, it looks like there should be some new smilies. But I can only see "police" :police: , "blank" :blank:, and "angel",
The others just show as text: :knuppel2: :coolsmiley: :idiot2: :2funny: :crazy2: :smiley6600: :smitten: :buck2: :uglystupid2: :tickedoff:
Thanks for all the hard work you've been putting in on this!
-
One improvement I've noticed: You now have the option to check "Unread Posts" in each of the three sub-forums. O0

I hadn't noticed that! That is cool.
-
I see that the "Quote from" is now over the quoted material ... but they are both "flush left," instead of the quoted material being indented, like a block quote. I liked the block quote effect, personally ... but SK preferred that the two things line up. Oh well, it's a minor point.
-
To get your PM page looking like it did before, with all the info down the left hand side of the screen. Just click on the the two little arrows at the top of the PM list on the right hand side of the screen.
-
Old smileys back and quotes fully indented. RJ

Old smileys back and quotes fully indented. RJ
Yay, old smileys ... and the new ones are nice, too! :2funny:
Nice job on the indented quotes. :)
-
I like the way the board is shaping up. Like the new Smileys and the way the quotes now appear. :)
-
Thanks Richard, the pop up box for PM's is back. :)
-
There used to be a link to the main site (Old School Archive) at the bottom of each page. Is that still around somewhere?
-
How good is it now that we don't have to put in those silly apostrophes in when sending a PM to someone? 8)
-
We have some nice new options when posting. We can now use keyboard shortcuts for formatting ... Ctrl + i for italics, Ctrl + b for bold, Ctrl + u for underlining.
Also, you can press the "toggle view" button , the last one on the lower right, and it will switch the view to "what you see is what you get" and back again. In WYSIWYG mode, you can see the formatting right away, and also any images you paste in using the Image button, (http://www.clinteastwood.net/forums/Themes/WesternMocha/images/bbc/img.gif).
I wonder if there is any way these options can be made available in the Quick Reply box, as well as on the "regular" Reply page?
-
By the way, if anyone is still seeing the "wrong" smilies, try clearing your browser's cache. It worked for me! 8)
-

Posible but it'll take some work. I'll have to put it in my feature request queue.
Link to main site back at bottom of page.
-
It's really looking good. Love the Reply All option in PMs. :)
-
I agree with KC. The board is looking great. A few little extra things to make life easier.
-
Link to main site back at bottom of page.
Cool. Thanks Richard. Love your avatar. 8)
Love the Reply All option in PMs. :)
Love that. 8)

The Schofield Kid and 0 Guests are viewing this board.
At the top of each page it tells you who is viewing that page. The members' name is now in blue and harder to read than the previous sandy color. Can we revert back to the sandy color?
-
Disregard last post. It's just moderators names in blue. :)
-
One more minor glitch, if it's not a "feature" ... ;)
It used to be you could start a post in the Quick Reply box, and if you then decided you wanted to quote someone's post, you clicked the "Quote" button in their post and it went right into the Quick Reply box, and you could continue your reply there.
But now, if you've started a Quick Reply and you click "Quote" ... it takes you to the full "Reply" page, and whatever you had already typed is gone! :o
(Though, if you don't want to re-type it, you can click "Back," cut it out of the Quick Reply box, then click "Forward" and paste it into the full Reply box.)

I just tried it and it was OK for me. Although I wanted the quoted material under what I wrote but it came out before.
-
How cool is this? I just discovered in our profiles that you can changed the amount of messages (posts) and Topics per page. Maybe it's always been there but I'm sure I've never seen it before. It's always been on 20 but I just changed it to 50 and thinking the posts would come out smaller but they don't. Everything is the same except the amount of pages for a certain topic is smaller than what it was before. For example this topic was 2 pages, now it's still only one.
Messages to display per page: (Forum Default 20)
5
10
25
50
It's on the look and layout page of our profiles. :coolsmiley:
-
Is it just me but I think when you click on post now, it's loading so much faster. Almost instantaneous.
-
I just tried it and it was OK for me.
Hmm, well, I'll try it again ...
Nope, still not working for me. May be browser-related (I'm using Firefox).
(We're talking about using the Quick Reply box to insert a quoted post.)
Although I wanted the quoted material under what I wrote but it came out before
The quoted material should go wherever you've clicked, so that the flashing insertion cursor is on that spot.

Yep. :)
-
As you can see, I quoted your post but only kept one line of it. Replied, "Yep". Then clicked quote on your post again to put it after "Yep" but it came out at the top.
-

Now I can't see my own stats on my profile page. Clicking on my profile takes me to the account settings page. :(

Might be a browser thing. You use IE, right?
Now I can't see my own stats on my profile page. Clicking on my profile takes me to the account settings page. :(
Same for me! :o But when I click on your profile and click Show stats, I can see your stats! ???
However, this second quote came right where I wanted it to. ;)
-

Yep.
-
I am on Firefox and experiencing the same quote issue as KC.
I have updated the permission to fix the user stats bug for everyone including moderators. If you go to your profile page, now you should be able to view your stats.
RJ

Fixed. 8)
-
I see the Moderators are no longer in blue when they appear in places like "... are viewing this board." I kind of liked the blue, but I guess it was hard to see especially when you're using the Dark theme.
-
I use Firefox and I seem to be having the same problems as KC and Richard.
I noticed Moderators names are now a yellow/orange colour. It is easier to see than the blue on the dark board.
Great we can see our stats again.
Richard is one cool speedy guy at fixing these little glitches. O0
-
Yeah, the yellowish color is easier to see than the blue. And yay, I can see my personal stats and posts! ;D
And I really like that we can see how many posts we've made by the hour on our personal stats page! That's a cool update.
-
The quick quote should now be working again. That one was tricky.
Not sure what to do in regards to the blue / gold debate. I agree with KC as I have been using Mocha. But on the Dark theme I agree the gold is better. It is one of those features that is set globally, so I have to pick a color that works for all themes.
-

It is! :)

If it's between the blue and the gold, I think you have to go with gold, if only because so many more people use the Dark theme. I can see the gold fine, anyway. Just thought the blue looked kind of cool.

Thanks,Richard!! I am very happy to find a new smiles with all old functionality!! :coolsmiley:
-
The « previous next » link has disappeared from the bottom of each page. It's still at the top but I was always using the bottom link. Any chance of that returning, Richard?
-

<< previous next >> is back. Thanks for catching that Scho.

I know I might be pushing the friendship here but could it be possible to get a "GO UP" link on the bottom of our PM page? I know we've never had one but I've always thought it would come in handy. O0 (Thumbs up smiley has returned) O0
-
You know what would be nice is if we could go to a specific page within a thread... If a thread has say three pages, then of course I can choose which page to go to. But what about threads that have a 120 pages to them, and I want to go to page 50. I'm sure there's a way in the address bar, but it's certainly not obvious (unlike some forums), but I've seen forums that have a drop-down box to "go to" what page you want.
-
The "Reply to all" option seems to be gone (in Firefox, anyway) from the PMs page.
Also, I'm getting the popup about new PM(s) twice! :o
-

I am on Firefox / Mocha and have the Reply to all? No changes have been made to that template, so that is really weird...no changes have been made in the last 24 - 48 hours to any code.
I am listening to new feature requests but putting them off until all bugs are fixed.
-
I just checked again in both Firefox and IE, and when a message was sent to me and at least one other person ... I have "Reply," "Quote" and "Delete," but not "Reply to all." ???
This cap is from IE:
-
That is weird. Like my 1 star. Which of course is fixed now.
-
At least the "two popups for a new PM" problem seems to have gone away! :)
-
I think I figured out the problem with "Reply to All." Somehow, my e-mail settings had gotten changed to "Display personal messages as a conversation." I don't recall changing it, but I kind of liked it, since you see the other person's messages and your replies together. But apparently, "Reply to all" isn't an option with that setting. I changed it back to "Display personal messages all at once," and voilà, "Reply to All came back." :)
One less thing for Richard to worry about!
-
Good to hear you figured it out. I don't know why the software does it that way. You were making me sweat a bit there!
-
Minor point but the birthday cake on a person's profile for their birthday is not a patch on what we had before.

That is a cake for dieters. Our old one was dripping in frosting, it also had a candle. ;D ;D

Haha Yes, this new one does look like it's somehow more healthier. Perhaps it's the cherry on top! ;D

What has happened to the smilies? These are the only ones still showing: :) ;D 8) O0 :coolsmiley: :blank:
Instead, I see this in Firefox:

And this in IE:
-
They are all perfectly OK for me.
-
They're still gone for me ... ???
If I right click on them one by one, and select "Reload image" (in Firefox), they come back. What is up with that? ???
-
Now I clicked on "Reload" (the whole page), and they all came back! :D :smitten:
-
Sometimes not all the smilies will show up for me, but if I refresh the page, that'll usually work.
-
Yeah, this time, I could have sworn I already tried it and it didn't help ... Oh well, as long as they're all back now! :)
-

I just figured out if click on the ellipses that appear when a topic has a lot of pages, it'll list all the pages for that thread. (Gee, I hope that wasn't already an option that I just never knew about...) Anyway, it's a great option to know about.
-
If it was "an option that I just never knew about" ... I never knew about it either! And if it's a new feature, it's a great one.
Good find, Doug!
-
Dumb question from a dumb mod. :uglystupid2: Where does the ellipse appear? I looked on a thread with loads of pages and couldn't find the ellipse. Dumb I may be but I do know what an ellipse looks like. :crazy2:
-
According to Wikipedia, the correct term is "ellipsis." "Not to be confused with Ellipse." :D (The plural is "ellipses," so Doug has it right.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis
It is also known as "three dots." It looks like this:
...
Or sometimes . . .

AH!!!! I see it now and it works.
It is official I am dumb. :idiot2:

Don't be silly, Lin ... you're not dumb, I never noticed it before either. I think it may be a new feature. :)

Have you noticed when typing a reply or PM now that if you spell a word incorrectly a little red squiggly line appears under the word? I don't remember seeing that before.

I've always had that as a feature of my browser (Firefox).

Me too.

That's been something I've more recently have noticed as well, and not just on this site. So perhaps the browser has updated that. ???
And, actually, when I was typing recently above, I mis-typed it switching the "e" and the "n," and the word automatically corrected itself.
-
I guess SK and Christopher are using IE? It must have just added the built-in spellcheck feature, which Firefox has had as long as I can remember.
Firefox still doesn't automatically correct mis-typings, though, so I guess IE is now in the lead on the orthography front.
-
Yep, I usually use IE.
-
I wouldn't call this a glitch or anything, but I'd noticed very recently that I'd get an email notification for when someone replied in a thread after my last reply. I just went back into my profile setting and saw that the box was checked that said, "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic." It must have been an automatic update or something but I don't believe I'd checked the box. Like I said, not exactly a glitch, but did anyone else start getting email notifications just recently?
-
Hi, Christopher, "It's not a bug, it's a feature."
Richard turned on automatic notification "by default," to encourage discussion on the Board. You can easily turn it off if you'd rather not get the e-mails.
-
Christopher: It was an update meant to make it easier for new users to engage. Let me know if you have trouble turning it off. R
-
Was the board down just a little bit ago?
When the board isn't up and running, it means I don't have anything to preoccupy myself during class. :D ;D
-
Yes. I was sweating big time. Database error...yikes. I hadn't done a recent backup either. So happy to see board come back up after I did a repair of the database....!!!
-
:o Gulp.
-
:o
Glad it worked out OK, Richard!
