Web Site Announcements / Re: Board updates and maintenance
« on: October 02, 2010, 08:49:36 PM »
Well, here's the short version of it...

As much as I would like to update the other site, in reality I just have not had the time (as is quite apparent for anyone that has browsed through it recently  :)).  I work full-time as the lead webmaster for a college which eats up so much of my time these days, and really for the past several years, not to mention the kids, family, etc.  So much has changed since the site first went live in '96. Back in the day, before there was Google, or YouTube, or Wikipedia, there wasn't much out there online  for us Eastwood fans and the site filled that void to some degree. It also was the perfect outlet for me that fused together two of my passions - Clint Eastwood and HTML.  The site got me where I am today and doing what I enjoy doing most - developing websites. So here we are today in 2010, and Google, YouTube, Wikipedia and other sites do exist thankfully and have a ton of excellent content, updated much more frequently then I could ever imagine to do. Technology is better and different than it was then too (thank goodness!).  I was considering pulling the old site offline as it is very outdated and lacking in many areas, not only in content, but design/code/standards/etc. But then I thought, no, there is a sort of history behind this site as it currently exists, being around as long as it has--a nostalgia factor if you will that I still hold on to. The internet changes fast and the expectations of its audience have evolved, and yet this site has been around for most of its growing pains. And for all things being said, I think it has held up fairly well.  But it is by no means where it should or could be. So I figured I'd leave it online, slap an archive label on it so folks at least realize that we realize the site is not current nor coded by today's standards, and continue onward. Consider it a partial trip down the way back machine now. Perhaps one day a Clint Eastwood 2.0 (or at this point, 3.0) site could come out of all this too, who knows.  A wise man once said, 'man's got to know his limitations' and that is true. For now, after a great run, version 1.x has been (semi)retired.

The one area of the site though that is strongest, current and most unique, frankly, is this forum. You all have done an OUTSTANDING job and the amount of great information and resources posted here really is amazing! I really do appreciate you guys for keeping it running so efficiently and doing what you all do for all this time.  My goal is to keep this forum up and running for as long as it's something people enjoy coming to and find useful, maybe even up date it from time to time too (oh no better not jinx it)  ^-^.  It is still one of the best resources out there for Clint Eastwood fans anywhere. Again, kudos, praises and thanks to you all!

Anyway, so that's the short story behind those changes.  (Though I'd like to think nothing too much has changed other then publicly recognizing what was totally obvious.)   ;)

Peace and thanks!

Hey everyone -

I was contacted by someone at Special Ops Media who is working on promoting the AMC premier of Million Dollar Baby.  Here is what they wanted to do:

"We would love for you to write up your personal favorite Clint directorial highlights in support of the Million Dollar Baby basic cable premiere on AMC this Saturday.  In addition, we have two Million Dollar Baby DVDs to give to you to use for a giveaway!  I hope this helps.  I have provided a little blurb below regarding the airing on Saturday.  Please let me know if there is anything else you need from me and if you will be able to have this live before Friday."

AMC PREMIERE EVENT: MILLION DOLLAR BABY will be showcased on two consecutive nights on Saturday, May 17th and Sunday, May 18th at 8 pm ET & PT/7C.  Directed by Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank star in this 2004 film about a hardened trainer/manager who works with a determined woman in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer. MILLION DOLLAR BABY garnered four Oscars  including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Director, Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actor.

So basically I thought this could be a good topic for this board.  It opens it up to the masses, not just one, and then if they still send the DVD's I could give them away as a drawing on whomever posts their highlights?!?

Don't know how this will work but if interested, please post your "personal Eastwood directorial highlights" here and besides sharing your views with everyone, you also enter yourself (hopefully) for a free DVD.   O0

Board slightly upgraded from 1.14 to  1.15. Just FYI. Fixes some bugs here and there.

Swell!  ^-^

Yea that would be cool. Many possibilities there, gun metal blue/silverish hues and tones. Something to add to my to-do list for sure. The nice thing about the built-in themes is that i am able to tweak parts of the code that dont effect the other themes. Where as before it was all shared, which is why that text was black until now.

Still need to update the Filmography on the other site too.  My day job has consumed my free-time lately which is why some of this has been put off until now. Thanks for hanging in there with some of this stuff. Dusting off some of the cob webs before it gets crazy again.

I have noticed a huge decrease in SPAM since the upgrade too. Whoohoo.

Happy New Year all.  O0

Nice work Lilly! Thanks.

Dang - some of you people LOVE YOUR MOCHA!  ;)
Didn't think it would be missed that much - wrong I was.

OK, as promised, I have set up a separate theme that uses the Mocha style. This theme can be accessed and turned on permanently via your Profile page.  Just click "Profile" near the top of this page, then from there click "Look and Layout Preferences" from the left hand side menu. From there you will see a new choice..."Current Theme". Click "change" and from there you can set the Mocha flavor theme. Dark is the set default. It's pretty cool and doesn't get much easier than that. Try it out and let me know if it works as described.

Sooooo, between Lilly's excellent Greasemonkey/Firefox set up or by simply selecting the Mocha Theme right from within this site, you Mocha people should have your fix.  Lay off the Starbucks.  :)

PS -  As time permits I hope to spruce the Mocha theme up a bit more (its a work in progress right now), and eventually maybe make some more themes.. always wanted to do a Dirty Harry theme... punk!

Well it looks like the only way to bring back a lighter colored style (MOCHA) is to create a new THEME.  The style switcher way I was using will not work with the upgrade to this forum. So that will be coming soon.

If you are using Firefox 2 or IE 7, you can subscribe to any board forum via RSS feeds. Just click on the browsers "feed" button when it lights up on a page you want to subscribe to. Just FYI.  8)

Still working on that Mocha bug. I am staying optimistic. On another note I have recoded some things so that the text resize works using the browser. Before it was hard set and IE would not let you do this. Now if you want to increase or descrease the font size it can be done in all browsers. I just leave it at Medium/Normal though. Peace.

UPDATE: The new board code is conflicting with the style sheet switcher which was another tweak I did long ago. All these tweaks are  the reason for the board bugs lately so my goal is to standardize everything and avoid code hacks and tweaks. I have upgraded this board to the latest version so it is now standardized with the exception of this style switcher issue. Still working on a fix but in the mean time I have had to disable it. So currently there is one style - DARK. If I cant get a fix, the next solution will be to create a new THEME that this board now supports natively and incorporate the MOCHA look. I originally created this when this board did not support themes, but now its caught up and can be done via other methods. PLEASE be patient during this time. Will keep you posted. Thanks.

PS - Firefox users can STILL use the MOCHA style via their browser... just go to VIEW/PAGE STYLE and select MOCHA. IE users are out of luck for now.

See the thread under announcements. Working on fixing this. Unfortunatley there is no DEV version of the board to test these upgrades on and i made some big changes to the code. For some reason the style sheet is no cooperating like it should. Will be fixed soon.

Just made some more major changes to this board.  Please report any weirdness you might see, such as white pages with no style, etc.  Hopefully everyone still sees the Western/wood theme. Thanks.

I believe the NEW icon and Mark and Read bugs are fixed. Working on others. Send me links to smilie sets that are not ugly and I will consider adding them for users to switch to.  These are the latest and greatest, that's all.

Should be back to the Western look. More upgrade issues. Sorry about that. Please let me know if you are still seeing blue after you log out, close out your browser and come back.

As many of you have noticed, this board has been updated. Unfortunately due to the fact that the old board had so may hacks and tweaks, running any update out of the box removes those old hacks and in some cases brings on new problems. I am working on solving these but there are many bugs that are present right now that will need to be dealt with in the short term. There are still some major things I am working on that might take days/weeks to resolve. Please post any MAJOR issues you have seen or email them to me directly.  Thanks for your patience!

PS - The sporadic SERVER ERROR screen that appears is due to sotware my WEB HOST uses to manage all the sites. They are aware of the issue but can not tell me when this will be fixed. I am VERY disappointed with this answer but will keep you all posted. Please contact me if this becomes more frequent so I can let them know. Thanks.

Cal, I can't quote your post in Reply # 19 because the quote feature doesn't work for me, but as a mod I can check the codes in your post by hitting "Modify." And when I do I see you have the codes correct, that is the end codes are in reverse order from the beginning codes.

[b ][i ]test[/i ][/b ] (without the spaces)

If you don't follow this order, some of the end codes show up on the page ...

[i ][b ]test[/b ][/i ]

It's not a big deal. It's easy to get the codes in the correct order if you use the BBC tag buttons above the message box.

The two problems that annoy me the most are the lack of the quote feature (for quoting posts with the username and post time included) and the fact that the "New" button doesn't take you to the first new post in a thread but to the beginning of the thread.

Ok thanks. Yes the order of the tags seem to be less forgiving now. But they onlly way they would get outr or order is if you did by hand correct?

The Quote feature works for me in IE and Firefox. Are other people having the same issue or only some?  You are clicking the main QUOTE icon on the posts correct?
