General Discussion / Will Clint act again?

     I remember during Blood Work's release Clint hinted at the fact that it could be his last film as an actor and he'd continue working as a director.

      Now since it looks like his next project will be the Neil Armstrong bio I wonder if he is retired from acting.

      He's had a great career as a film star and certianly doesn't owe anyone anything.   But as an Eastwood fan I hope he at least has a few more roles left in him.

       Even if Clint's acting days are over I'm glad we still have him around as a great director.

     Well there really weren't any surprises at the Oscars.   Return of the King had a clean sweep like many predicted.   While I liked the films I wouldn't consider myself a huge Lord of the Rings fan.   But Peter Jackson put a lot of hard work into those three films so I say good for him.

      Even though Clint did not win Mystic River still went down as the biggest winner after Return of the King with Sean Penn and Tim Robbins winning.   Both Sean and Tim have praised Clint as a director and it's obvious that he was a big help in getting great performances out of them for Mystic River.   So Clint should still feel like a winner.   I think that in nearly any other year Mystic River would've been a big Oscar winner but it unfortunately got caught up in the Lord of the Rings phenomenon.

       As far as Clint's best directing effort to date goes I'd say it is still Unforgiven.   But an argument can easily be made that Mystic River is his second best.   Other candidates for second best in my opinion would be The Outlaw Josey Wales, A Perfect World, and Bridges of Madison County.

        Clint's a great director and I can't wait to see what he will do next.

     Clint still has a pretty impressive physique for a 73 year old.   If you look at his arms in both Space Cowboys and Blood Work it looks like he still probably does some lifting.   Although I would imagine that he probably doesn't lift heavy weights now and focuses more on an aerobic workout.

       I think that out of all his films Clint probably looked the most pumped up for Heartbreak Ridge.

    After Space Cowboys Clint shouldn't have much of a problem with space sequences.   Although this obviously will be a much more serious film than Space Cowboys.   Hopefully it'll be good enough to give Clint another Oscar contender.

     Unfortunately I think Ebert's prediction will be right in regards to Lord of the Rings.   Peter Jackson's probably going to win Best Director and the film will win Best Picture.

       However I'll be jumping up and down with joy if Clint's name is announced.   But I wouldn't count on it.

        Still I think that wins for Mystic River seem very likely in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.

         Clint's an old pro at the Hollywood game and I'm sure he realizes that he most likely will lose out to Jackson tonight.   But he should be proud at all the acclaim his film's been getting especially considering none of the studios wanted to touch it at first.

     I'll be watching the Oscars and rooting for Clint to win.   But unfortunately I don't think he will.   I think they're going to give it to Peter Jackson mainly out of sympathy because he hasn't won yet for any of the Lord of the Rings films.   Although just because he won the Golden Globe doesn't mean that it's a hundred percent sure thing that he'll win the Oscar.   But I don't want to get my hopes too up because the odds are more in favor of Clint not winning.

       Still even if he doesn't win it is pretty awesome that Clint's been nominated once again for Best Director.


         I saw Mystic River for the second time on Sunday.  And while I changed my opinion about it being Clint's best directorial effort I still think it's an excellent film.   Unforgiven still ranks for me as Clint's greatest masterpiece.   Also the fact that Clint is in Unforgiven is probably one of the reasons why I like it more than Mystic River.

    That's why I think the film works so well because it doesn't get too sentimental.   Plus Clint has a fine supporting cast to work with.


    The only thing that Clint might not like about Bronco Billy as well as several of his other films is that Sondra Locke is in them.

     Dirty Harry
     Magnum Force
     The Enforcer
     Sudden Impact
     The Dead Pool

      While I like all five films I feel that each Dirty Harry sequel was weaker than its predecessor.   The Enforcer would get my pick for the funniest Harry film although the ending is kind of sad.

        Out of the sequels Magnum Force is the only one that is almost as good as the original.

General Discussion / Bronco Billy

     I bought this film on DVD today and watched it in its entirety for the first time.   I liked it quite a bit.   It's a nice little comedy that has a lot of heart.

      It's also fun to watch Clint poke fun at his tough guy image in certain scenes.

       Along with Billy the character that I liked the most was Doc.   He came across as the nicest and most likable of the characters.

        I've read that this film is one of Clint's favorites and it's not too hard to see why.

     I wouldn't mind seeing the first Dirty Harry re released in theaters since I'm sure there are plenty of Harry fans who weren't around when it first was released.

    Being that there are a lot of attempts to revive old action franchises going on the Dirty Harry rumors aren't too surprising.   I wouldn't doubt it if Warner Bros. execs. have brought the idea up to Clint from time to time.

     Based on Clint's recent comments it seems like he would only agree to play Harry again if someone came up with something really good.   So unless someone can write a superb sixth Dirty Harry I don't think Clint will be doing it.   At this stage in his career he's not going to commit to doing a by the numbers action thriller.

      Another approach that Warner Bros. might take is to turn Dirty Harry into a Bond type of series and have another actor take over.   But in my opinion there is only one Dirty Harry and I think without Clint the film would tank.

     I'm a big fan of the Dirty Harry series and think that the first one is easily one of the greatest thrillers of all time but I can't really see Clint doing this type of film anymore at 73.

       That was a good interview with Clint.   It kind of sounds like he may at least semi retire from acting.   If that's the case I'll miss seeing him on screen in new films but he's had a great career and I'll still look forward to what he does as a director.

         A sequel to Josey Wales might've been interesting but I agree with Clint that it's a good enough picture to stand on its own.

Eastwood News / Did Clint top Unforgiven?

     I went to see Mystic River today and was totally blown away by it.   I was expecting it to be quite good since Clint is a terrific director and the reviews have been positive.   But even with that this movie still surpassed my expectations.    The 2hrs and 17 minutes just flew right by and I felt like I was watching the struggles of real people.  The film had an excellent combination of suspense and drama.   Plus Clint's film score was pretty haunting and fit in perfectly.

       As much as I love Unforgiven I think that Mystic River might've just surpassed it and is now Clint Eastwood's directorial masterpiece.   I expect to see Clint get his second Oscar nomination for Best Director and hopefully he'll win.
