When one goes into a Leone film there is a certain expectation, especially if having viewed the two previous dollars films.  Personally, this is my favorite prologue in any film, with maybe the exception of magnolia.  For a screenwriter, writing a prologue that goes as long as this one does, would be ridiculous in today's cinema.  The fact that Leone takes so much time to develop the characters is really rewarding especially when we get the pay off of the names reappearing.  Since Blondie is probably the most morally ambiguous character, we as the audience have to realize that Blondie kills the most people, backstabs his partner, and willing withholds information at times, this is as good of a character as we'll get in this movie.  Because the film is dealing with a different time and different types of people than we're use to, even in 1966, the audience needs that time to acclimate to this world.  I think Tuco is the simplest of all the characters in the film, followed by Angel Eyes, and ending with Blondie, for the audience we only needed a little amount of time to understand what kind of person Tuco is, and longer Angel Eyes, and so on.  The prologue is epic which keeps in tune with Leone's style in general, and it has become very iconic.

I watched J. Edgar last night.  Having missed in theaters I was subject to the various opinions of the overly pretentious film community that I am a part of as I go to film school.  As terrible as I heard it was, I was pleasantly surprised.  My mentor put it well the other night and said "J. Edgar proves that Clint is human."  At the time I thought the comment was very strange and rather off putting but after viewing the film I think I understand.  For a film dealing with a character who is so big as Hoover is, it is a surprisingly intimate film.  Its not very often that Clint does films that are so personal, I would say his most recent film that is personal is Gran Torino.  I was surprised at the subtle way the homosexuality was handled throughout the film, which I wasn't expecting at all being that the script came from Dustin Lance Black, writer of Milk.  The frailty of Hoover's character was so intriguing to me and his dynamic with Clyde was handled so gently that I loved that aspect of the movie.  Clint's directing style, to me, was very paternal nature, which I can't really say about any of his other films, the handling of life, homosexuality, and politics was so straight forward but you still had to pay attention.  So I agree with what my mentor said, human.

That being said, the film, in my opinion, was really anti-climatic, maybe because it seemed to have two climaxes, Hoover's mother dying and Hoover's final confrontation with Clyde.  It bothered me from a screenwriting point of view.  While I generally enjoy Clint's choices of lighting in his films, I thought this film was way too dark, to the point I couldn't distinguish objects, and while I understand from a psychological point of view that the film is tackling the shadiness of government, it could've been slightly more well lit.  I thought Naomi Watts was underused in the film, I didn't feel that she added anything to the part.  And at certain points I didn't know who was who, especially in dealing with the abduction part of the film. 

Overall I liked it, but I won't be watching it again, anytime soon.  Unless we do a movie night for it.

I have been so busy recently that I forgot to share this with you guys when it happened.  But, my Clint Eastwood friends will appreciate this more than anyone else.  So a couple of months ago I was waiting to hear from Cal State Long Beach to see if my transfer was accepted (which it was yay!!!!!), but at the time it was very nerve wracking because I didn't know what my plans would be this fall for my schooling.  So one day as I'm about to leave for work, I ask my mom if she's checked the mail for today.  She goes into the garage brings in the mail.  We're searching through the mail for stuff from CSULB, alas there was nothing, however, more interestingly there was an envelope.  The return address on the envelope was from Malpaso Productions.  My mother and I were quite perplexed by such an envelope.  I open it an inside is this:



Needless to say... I sorta flipped out. 

The odd thing about this, the photo did not come with a note and there was no return address for the actual person who requested this photo for me.  To this day, I still do not who made the effort to send the photo to Clint and get it signed.  But now it is proudly on display in my room.

To give a synopsis, I did a documentary about my best friend's band and their trying to get to the top.  My best friend is the one who plays guitar and is in the red shirt, and in the individual interview the one with the red background.  Anyway, thought I would share.

Ahhh I'm so glad that we started a Dexter thread.  I love Dexter.  I just bought a new iMac and we named it Dexter and the user name on it is Slice of Life.  My dad and I are a little bit addicted.  I'm on Episode 2 of Season 4 and I was so blown away by the first episode.  And, John Lithgow creeps me out more than anything else that's happened in Dexter in the last three seasons.  Eweeeeee.

I had a funny at work the other day.  So some guests had wandered out of California Adventure (DCA) into the esplanade, the entry plaza between California Adventure and Disneyland, with some bright yellow cups.  Bright yellow cups are only sold at DCA when someone purchases alcohol.  They're not suppose to leave California Adventure because of our liquor licenses.  Well regardless we were having a heavy exit at DCA because the park was closing so we were trying to get everyone out.  Well some of these cups came through, which happens.  When a cast member (employee) sees these cups outside of DCA they are suppose to dispose of the alcohol right away.  Well a cast member saw these guests with the alcohol and didn't take it away but instead told them that they needed to consume the alcohol there.  This posed a few problems, one it violated our policy with the cups and liquor licenses, as well it is illegal, in California anyway, to consume alcohol in public.  At this point myself and my friend, we're both leads, had to come out and deal with the situation.  My friend, named James who is a tough lead but very gay, approaches the group first tells them that they need to dispose of their alcohol now.  We're then informed of what our cast member did, which was very infuriating.  James was able to take two cups of beer away from the group, he handed them to me.  One gentlemen in the group was very rude and wanted to keep drinking his beer, to which we both said no.  James took his beer was about to pour it into the trash when the gentlemen took it back from him and said "no, I'm going to finish it!".  James then got very angry took the beer away from him, and said "oh, no, no, no, you're not because it is ILLEGAL to consume alcohol in public, goodbye!".  We walked off and they watched as we dumped their beers in the trash.  We were very nice and allowed them to come into Disneyland, when we could denied them entry.  But they were quite upset with us, however, we felt quite accomplished for holding up Disney and California state laws.
