Your many kind messages have made me smile, laugh and cry as may be. I thought you'd like to know that my very long trip out to eastern Oregon to visit my brother was a great success. We had a good visit and our travels were safe and uneventful, except for a couple of elk who decided to play dodge the cars across the highway. It was malicious and deliberate because they did it repeatedly.  Some pictures follow. We spent a night in the Tetons. It was nice and restful.



We got to see my brother's kids, who happened to be visiting their dad at the same time.



My uncle and his new wife drove 8 hours just to see us.

I've been working on something called Master Guide in my Pathfinder Club. I got home on the 21st. They invested me on the 22nd.
I started the club in our church four years ago with 6 kids. This year we have at least 13 and we finally have 4 girls.

Home again and my sister gave me the gift of a lifetime. My mother helped her to finish it while we were gone.

The quilt's title is "The Music in Me". Since my life and music are one in the same, there is no better.





I just thought you might enjoy. I'm mentally at the same stage I was 4 weeks ago, for which I am grateful every day. Unfortunately, my lungs are starting to give me trouble.

Every Which Way But Loose (We spent Monday night in a cabin the Grand Tetons. It was a lovely place, but we had some down time and I finally finished watching this.)

To all you wonderful, funny, fantastically knowledgeable and friendly people, this is a very hard thing to write.

Some of you know that I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in July 2014. Fewer of you know that I found out in November 2016 that it was back.  I've been fighting it everywhere, but losing steadily. I could still fight medically, except that it's in my brain and very inoperable. I had a long visit with my doctor on July 5 and she told me I have 4 to 9 weeks left to me. I am doing well at the moment and hope that bodes well for the immediate future.

I am so blessed to have so many friends and family care and help keep us going. Please keep us in your thoughts. We are leaving Indiana for Oregon by van on Wednesday morning. My brother is incarcerated out there and can't come to see me. We will use it as an unheard-of family vacation.

I have really enjoyed being a member of this board and found some dear friends here. I'm only sorry we've never had a chance to meet. Chances are I won't be posting again, but I will if I can. My beloved has volunteered to let you know when it's all over. It's hard to say that, but I don't want you left wondering.

I was given a lovely party on Saturday evening. I spent my birthday recovering.

It seems like half of my days this year have been spent visiting the doctor, having scans, getting chemo, and even spending the night in our local hospital. When I'm not busy with those minor details of life, I'm having fun within my limitations. Today we took the boys and went to Putt-Putt and played two rounds of mini-golf. It was fun! Following are some other things that have made my day (and more) recently.

I am the director of a church youth club called Pathfinders. We are part of a world-wide organization. Recently we participated in an activity along with other clubs from our part of Indiana. The first weekend in May we will have a state-wide gathering where we all camp together and socialize. We'll also show off our terrible marching skills and have fun doing all sorts of outdoor activities. The picture is of most of my club. I think we were short two boys that day.



My son was the prop manager for his school's play in February. They did The Diary of Anne Frank and I made Anne's diary for them. I even sewed the pages in. I went to see the play the night after I got out of the hospital. It was worth the effort as they did a really good job. The following Monday my son came home with the diary and gave it back to me. Every member of the cast and crew had written in it especially for me. It was a rather moving experience.

 

For the past two or three weeks I have been visited regularly by Mr. Cardinal. He likes it when I whistle at him, he knocks on the window for my attention, and seems to enjoy watching me drive Mariokart 8. Recently he has brought his Lady Love with him. I don't expect to see him much now that the trees are starting to leaf out and nest building is in full swing.



Last Monday my older son was inducted into the Leroy F. Yoder chapter of the National Honor Society. Out of 40 inductees, there were only six boys. We all enjoyed the reception that followed.

That's an awful question to ask. While being so similar, they are so very different. I am more likely to watch The Magnificent Seven more often because it's shorter and I love it as a western, but I think Seven Samurai is my favorite. Like some other favorites of mine, it should be indulged in sparingly.

Thanks, 2M! Too bad I didn't see that the day you posted it. I surely could have used the laugh. Then again, maybe not. I had just come home from spending 24 hours in the hospital under observation. I went in on Thursday because I've been short of breath since last Saturday night and things reached a low point and my doctor told my husband to take me to ER. The only good thing about the whole experience was that I was on oxygen all that time, so felt much better and finally got over my headache for the first time in a week! I came home still short of breath, but feeling better.  The doctor called me this afternoon and told me to come in on Wednesday because she's going to change my chemo. She's afraid my lungs are worse than they seemed. You know your doc cares when she calls you on Sunday afternoon from home.

I'm on a roll! Actually I'm bored to death sitting in my recliner, so The Magnificent Seven was a wonderful diversion. I've always enjoyed this film because there is a degree of character development provided. At least enough to give the imagination room to run. It also introduced me to a number of actors who were new to me and I got to explore many new films as a result.

Eli is wonderful, as always.  Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn play my favorite characters. Looking at that list, there is something they all have in common - they don't talk too much.

I finished Seven Samurai today. It definitely picked up after the intermission. I was rather humored that every culture seems to require a fool to provide comic relief (even if he isn't a fool). Some scenes were much darker in this than in the Magnificent Seven because they deal with culturally sensitive things like honor and different tiers of a society that are much more rigid than ours.

I really enjoyed this. I found it interesting that it was much more acceptable for the men to weep openly. In such a tightly structured society maybe that is a good thing and provides a release.

You all are a great antidote to a very sore left shoulder.  I should have come here first this morning. 

Didn't get to eat anything between midnight in and 5:30 pm on Wednesday. I had to have a port put in so I can get infusions without them trying the impossible to find a vein that will work. I used to have such nice ones, but now they run scared every time a nurse shows up with a needle. They made me show up at the hospital for noon. After sitting around for an hour, they had me sign my life away (or at least guarantee I'd pay my bill). Surgery (outpatient but general anesthetic) was scheduled for 2 pm. They took me in around 1:30 to get ready, then I waited until nearly 3:30 because the surgery before mine took 2 hours instead of one. My surgery only took about half an hour. I was awake and joking with the nurses before I got back to recovery. The funny thing is that when I went in, I was told that the port would be on my right side. When I woke up I knew they'd put it right back in the same place as my old one on the left. Everyone but me forgot that I have a tumor sitting right about where they wanted to put the port. I knew that, but my headache was so bad by that time that I didn't bother to say anything. I'm so glad they figured it out without me.

Thanks again for the morning laugh. It was eggcellent and just what the doctor ordered.

Matt, your photos are just spectacular. Being married to a highly skilled amateur photographer, I appreciated your comments about the sunset photo shoot. That sky leaves me without words! I'm not the most patient person in the world when bored, so try to find some way of keeping occupied when hubby decides to take pictures. Before kids came along, I used the camera that my father-in-law gave me (he who had his son trained by a famous photographer in Taiwan) to take pictures of the photographer. I'll have to dig some out and scan them as they are pre-digital by a couple of years. It does lend an element of fun to the waiting. I even learned to take pictures when we weren't out together.

I'm looking forward to more of your artistry in photos.

I got sidetracked by three days of radiation to the brain. Excitement sets off seizures, so I thought movie watching might be out for a bit. Also, screen time causes headaches. They are better, so will get them watched soon. Seven Samurai is awfully long, though. They all are.

It does seriously bring into question why we need a remake. I enjoyed the original, but I surely would not walk across the street to see a remake. 

They'd never find another Orangutang to replace Clyde..
